Season 10 continues with Aslan & I moored at the most isolated part of the south Oxford Canal.
Soon after setting off, the realisation that I'm worryingly low on food suddenly hits me.
A few miles later and with no grocery stores for another 10 miles at least, good fortune presents me with a workable solution at the pretty village of Lower Heyford . . .

I guess sometimes you must feel very alone, even though there is plenty of short-lived interaction on the canals. Rest assured there are many thousands of friends all over the world who avidly look forward to your next episode. We are travelling along with you every mile of the way and sharing your experience. This is without any doubt the best narrowboat travel channel I have found, it feels professionally filmed and edited yet with a down to earth and realistically homely presence. Best wishes for the festive season from New Zealand.

Well said that, @napoleannz I've lived a rural life in Oklahoma for 36 years. 8 years in Tulsa, OK before that. I don't miss it but like the canal life, not a lot of interaction. KZfaq channels such as this (and yes, this is one of the best) does get me out in the world to some extent. Following the adventures of Aslan & CHG is a breath of fresh air, despite the bio-gas. LOL!

That's what tins (and a pantry, no matter how small!) are for. When you open up your refrigerator and are greeted with a blast of cold air and little else! Tinned veg always reminds me of when I were a wee rug-rat and ALL vegetables came in tins (except for a brief time in summer and early fall... if you had (a) a vegetable garden or (b) a good grocer nearby). It was strange to eat veg that had a bit of crunch to them!

I’m from the USA and appreciate and love James Brown. Maybe the British don’t understand my accent 🤣😂🤣. Thank you for a great video and those ponies reminded me of the two I had as a child. a full and fascinating episode this time, Kevin -- I came away with a renewed appreciation of your ablility to think on your feet, changing your plan and catching the train the way you did -- also, once more I had to acknowledge your growing skill as a visual storyteller, your knack of capturing the flow of events with minimal narration -- you were able to show more than tell the sense of surreality and contrast between the countryside and the bustle of Banbury...from the scenes of the next post, we can anticipate some real dramatic content, it appears...

A top tip: Those tinned potatoes make excellent roast potatoes. Much easier too, since you don't have to peel or part-boil the potatoes first, just open the tin and drain them. Use whatever fat or oil you like for roasting them, but rendered bacon fat works amazingly well. Failing that, beef suet is a reasonable substitute - the kind which comes as shredded pieces about the size of rice grains. The hotter you can get the oil or molten fat (without causing it to smoke and decompose), the better your roast potatoes will be. As an aside, the warning sign on that bridge seems to be a contender for any "most pointless sign" competition: How can any road vehicle possibly strike that bridge when it doesn't cross a road? Or perhaps more to the point, whoever decided to put that sign there evidently couldn't tell the difference between a road and a canal, which is amusing to think about.

Nice to see you back in Banbury again, lol. Lower Heyford is a pretty village, contrasting with Upper Heyford, just up the hill. It was a huge US airbase up until closure around 1993. Parts of it were used in the Bond film, Octopussy, doubling up for a European base. The runways and hardened hangars are still there but the domestic sites have been redeveloped for housing. Glad you weren't arrested for fare dodging, you never know with some of the jobsworths. I once got chucked off a train from Newcastle because my ticket was for the later train. Dumped me at Durham where I waited 15 mins for the 'right' train, ffs.

As I watched, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Those horses, gosh, what a great thing to see those horses! When the lady who helped you with your lock told you about the train possibility to get to some grub, I immediately started saying out loud here where I’m at my sons’ home in the St. Johns neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, watching their elderly dog while they go to surf in the Pacific Ocean on this Saturday morning, I said, “Go for the train! Come on, Kevin, go for the train!” I love trains! So, that tickled me that you decided to go by train for your shopping. I greatly appreciated your reflections on the modes of travel, the time spent traveling, and the two eras/areas through which you had traveled. It is mind blowing! Now you’ve left us with this somewhat anxiety-inducing cliffhanger. You are a top notch narrow boat blogger, honey! See you next time.

Well, maybe if he had consulted the timetables before starting out, that would have helped. Also, maybe next time take a photo of the alighting station - it _might_ help prove where that was. The trains used to be cheaper and more regular when they were nationalized - until the government of the day defunded them in order to sell them off. They’re now being defunded in order to get them brought back into public ownership.

Eisenbahn Perfect shirt for Travels by Narrowboat by Train. I like it. PS my favorite Eisenbahn is actually Schmalspurbahnen. Harzquerbahn or the many Sachsen Spurweite 650mm or 750mm. Schmalspurbahn.

What is more surreal, imo, is that I've seen this type of lifestyle labelled "off grid" or "free" but it's likely more reliant on modernity to survive than most. Can you find space for a small box with a few supplies such as some rice, packet dried food, dried vegies., cans or the like as a backup against life not going as planned? I always carry extra in my 4wd when I go away as a "just in case" measure even though I've never needed to use it. Camping stores have plenty of freeze dried options but they tend to be pricey. The pandemic bought it home to me when I saw what was happening overseas so we stocked up and we're still using some of the stuff we bought. We still keep enough to get by for a month, or more, in spite of being walking distance to a Supermarket, we have a couple of vehicles on hand and even have family who own a food warehouse/Supermarket that are only about an hour away.

Well that ending sure left us hanging off the cliff! 😮 Such beautiful surroundings and Heyford was ideal. I would've loved to explored that village. Those horses! I'm with you, could've watched them for hours. Thanks Kevin--

Really an interesting contrast between travel on canal vs by train. Very cool how a random suggestion lifts you totally out of context and the result is entirely to your benefit. I did enjoy the horsing around at the beginning. Frisky or randy….inquiring minds want to know ...all the best...Chris 🇨🇦

I've done the same meal in our van, its lovely but I cut and fry the potatoes and fry some onions as well, or use instant potatoe as it soaks up the sauce. Yummy easy food.😊 nice to see you, take care.😊
