Ever think about the Roman Empire? Well, Travis Van Winkle does-sometimes. In this week's episode, our hosts sit down with the talented actor, Travis Van Winkle, who also happens to be one of Justin and Jamey's closest friends. They dive into a wide-ranging discussion covering dating, overcoming trauma, friendship insecurities, alcohol, the Roman Empire, and the art of embracing life's imperfect timing.
When he's not gracing the screen, Travis Van Winkle devotes much of his time to his role as a Big Brother in the Big Brother Big Sister mentorship program. He opens up about his transformative experience as a mentor to his "little brother," Lyrik, and the revelation that he's more ready than ever for fatherhood. Travis shares his refreshed perspective on dating and marriage, opting for authentic human connections over dating apps while also acknowledging that the gift of marriage may not be in his immediate future.
Later in the episode, Travis shares his “curriculum for life” made up of the different challenges, learning and lessons he’s learned along the way. And Justin and Jamey reflect on Travis as a close friend, sharing heartwarming moments from their friendship, including a particularly vulnerable incident that threatened to shake their friendship early on.

Just asked my hubby how often he thinks about the Roman Empire and he said every 2 weeks! Who knew?! Love these articulate guests... even as a woman I can't articulate about my feelings like that. Fingers crossed for a Travis and Liz second date!!

I didn’t know Travis before seeing him on your podcast, and surprisingly everything that he said resonated enormously with what I observe my self battles to be. Feeling a bit of anxiety before coming to the show because of the fear of not being articulate enough, not feeling enough almost everyday, and the self betrayal just sounded so familiar. I think that I am fighting myself these demons of not feeling enough every day. I have troubles opening up myself, and I am a woman. This show speaks to everybody, it should probably be renamed to “Human Enough”. Thank you for this conversation, I am currently going through a breakup with my best friend with whom I was also working with, and it’s though.

This was a great conversation. Dynamic and not easy, the things that Travis shared. I can see the inner conflicts he has been battling with, I can relate greatly to his experience. Thank you for sharing everyone and Justin- so happy you joined. One last note: I am a woman and also think about the Roman Empire on a regular basis- I’d say weekly. For the same reasons as Travis. I could share soo much of my thoughts on this, but I will stop right here 😉 It’s a whole conversation and I feel an important one to have. I send you love everyone. Keep sharing ❤

First of all, I am obsessed with Mr. Van Winkle's hair! But on a more serious note, I was impressed with the level of vulnerability that he chose to express. Not many men are willing to go there publicly. It took courage. However, I was a bit saddened to witness this man who, for all intents and purposes, does not appear to be comfortable in his own skin. He clearly has accomplished quite a bit and seems to be a good human. But it appears he seems to think that is not enough. The self flagellation is holding him back from finding his joy. He even said it. He does not give himself enough grace. The question becomes, what is the pay off? What is he gaining by thinking and feeling this way? Only he can answer that. I sincerely hope that he can find the answer, learn from it, and move on. I want him to find peace and contentment. And ultimately find a person that has similar qualities as his mom. It was one of the few moments in the podcast when he seemed to light up when he was describing her. I wish him the best on his journey.

Well, I feel validated. I appreciated the viewpoints given by Travis and that 3rd Guy 😉 about the dating apps. Together you articulated my inability to ever follow through with signing up under peer pressure. This show was sweet, fun, heartwarming. Thanks for sharing your friendship. Whoa, Liz, I was super surprised by the Roman Empire and Last Best Friend thing. Jamie, it’s alright if you say some irritating things and you’re not ALWAYS the most liked host on the podcast. 😅😅😅 Looking forward to the second date. 😉

Whoo, love this. I haven't; finished it yet but am excited and want to comment. I also want to commend Liz for speaking so truthfully and being authentic as I think I may be intimidated in a room of men who I consider "successful", though I'm sure I'd become more relaxed as the conversation went as Jamey, Travis and Justin seem really authentic and easy to be with. About the marriage conversation: I know that in the Baha'i Faith there are writings about marriage being a fountain of wellbeing for humanity but also there is SO much that needs to happen before that statement becomes true. For me, marriage has been a wonderful safety and joy but also in many ways I feel less safe because, when I lived as a single woman, my home was a place I could rest from the patriarchy and reconnect with a truer self, but now the patriarchy is IN my home daily and I need to make a home with someone who may not always see how their actions are coming from a place of upholding patriarchy. How does marriage become safe and/ or unsafe when racism is involved? When economic status adds to power imbalance between two people? So, sometimes I see the Baha'i writings as broad statements which could be attainable, but may not be completely true within the context of present day cultures and society.

Thank you for this very interesting conversation. I am already so so happy for THE ONE who ends up with Travis. That will be one amazing romantic relationship going on with such real and deep conversations. The picure I see of this is very beautiful. Sorry Travis it can't be me as I am in Switzerland and too much screen time would be involved in getting to know each other. ;-) I totally get the internal self work part Travis mentioned. Through Self work (Hypnosis, Energy Healing, Quantum Healing I have learned so much about myself in this life, but also in past lives. It turns into a Si-Fi/Fantasy movie at times almost. When we are able to get still enough to hear our Soul speak, the magic starts to happen. And Travis, you already belong, YOU ARE an important part of Source.

I want to shout out Liz for a minute because it can be hard to voice your opinions in a room full of men, especially when it's clear that sometimes we look at the world in different ways. (Roman Empire) I'm not assuming it was hard for her, but that it was something I noticed I would have struggled with. Also, a huge thank you to Travis for sharing his work on feeling like enough in the person he is rather than comparing himself to other people or projecting their judgment. I noticed the same characteristics/traits in myself and realized I should probably do a deeper dive there.

Some people don't meet anyone they would like to marry - Just happens to some people. And it doesn't mean they are not sticking around. Sure - if you do meet the right one and it lasts - that would be great. But it's better to be on your own than in the wrong relationship. Sometimes life just doesn't put a partner in your path.

Marriage statistically elevates men’s health, joy and peace, but does the opposite to women. Just something to think about, I mean why is that still the case in 2024? 🤔
