2022 Season 1 continues with Week 5, and the Global Mazda MX-5 Fanatec Cup takes to the Oulton Park Circuit. Once again, we’ve got Dave Cam on the cams to show how to get around this English venue. According to Dave, this week’s car and track combination might be one of the best on iRacing.
The car, of course, is the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup. Dave has been wheeling and dealing in the MX-5 all season long, first in his weekly track guides and then with a weekly race in the series. Last week, Dave was able to capture the victory at Summit Point. It goes to show that the slow and methodical approach in these track guides are nothing to sneeze at.
This week, iRacing is utilizing Oulton Park’s International course. The circuit measures 2.692-miles or 4.307-kilometers. There are 17 turns, each of them named, and Dave knows how to get through each and every one of them. Dave has all of the corners, braking markers, and more to get you acquainted with the race track. Follow these steps and you too may end up finding this combination to be as good as Dave makes it out to be.
While you’re here, check out all of Dave’s other track guides on the Traxion website. This editor recently went back to check out an old Red Bull Ring guide, and you have to trust me that it helps. If you’ve been able to pick up some pointers from today’s video, leave a thumbs up! Don’t forget to subscribe and ring the bell for future video releases on the channel. Keep it pinned!

I won! Thanks to traxionGG and Dave Cam for trackguide at Oulton. It was a bottom split win, but for us slow people any win is hard to come by these days!

Recently joined Iracing and now for 3rd week I am here with your track guides at work mastering the circuits, then later on in the evening jump to simulator to cement the results . Thank you so much for those guides Dave.

This helped me get P1 in my first race ever and P2 in my second running in the 1:54s which helped me quickly get out of Rookies. I left a lot on the table too, so I look forward to coming back to this track. It seemed to suit the MX5 perfectly. Thanks Dave.

Just started iRacing last night having only played ACC and it's very different, but really good. The MX5 feels squirly under brakes all the time. Constantly having to countersteer into corners and I feel like I'm drifting a lot of the time. Best I managed was a 1:57.3 which I was completely happy with. Having watched this video it's giving me quite a few pointers so hopefully I can crack 1:55 soon. Still not sure how your so stable around the track though.

Watched before sleep yesterday. Massive improvement today. 3, 5, 11, 15 crucial. coming for them 52s. I found a better way for T4. Only lift to half throttle. not the most important, but anyway

1:56:5 before, 1:55:2 after. still well off a 1:53 though! great videos though so thanks for taking the time. I like to get up to a reasonable speed myself. Then use these to see where I can improve.

Had a race on here early this morning, great car and track combo. Unfortunately I was killed going into turn 3 and the final lap by the 2nd place car 😪

Same. P2 squeezed me going into the chicane and ended up punting me but I salvaged it and finished P3 but not before putting up some crazy defense against P4 who was on my ass the majority of the race after that.

You said in your video guide shifting before 7000 rpm but you don't do it 🤔
@davecamm
@davecamm 2 жыл бұрын
If I'm going up a hill I'll leave it a little longer (maybe 7200) so it doesn't bog but I have a big display on my wheel with the rpm so I won't run into the limiter. I said in the guide maximum power is reached at 7000rpm (which is what is quoted by iracing) 👍
@OfficeLinebacker
@OfficeLinebacker 2 жыл бұрын
@@davecamm Also keep in mind if you shift exactly at peak power, you'll drop a lot of RPM down below the peak. If you stretch it a bit on the top end, you don't drop into such a low part of the power band.

I am knew to sim racing but best I can do is 26s more or less consistently. So hard to be smooth. I just keep understeering every corner. What is the best way to practice to break bad habits like these. I either don't brake enough before the corner or don't trail brake properly ( probably combination of both) if I try to brake more I end up slowing down too much and being slower than understeering. So hard to catch that perfect most optimal point. I don't feel it naturally for some reason that it's the fastest way. My brain keeps thinking if I go in too hot and understeer it's the fastest way

rules no 1: don'y miss the apex. lower speed on the perfect line is faster than missing the apex with a lot of speed. For the understeer, with the mazda, lifting the gas or a bit of braking will make the car rotate if you are on near the limit of grip. Go watch some video on slip angle. You need to be slightly sideways to get the maximum grip of the car. At the limit, you can control the car with a bit of gas/brake to balance the weight of the car on the right tire. On some car you always need a bit of gas in corner (no complete lift off) or otherwise you will get snap oversteer. Feathering the gas will keep the weight on the back tire. on other car you need to keep a small amount of braking inm order to keep the wieght on the front tire...

@@beambox1421 thank you yeah trying to lower the speed and be faster that way. Pretty hard for now though. Getting same brake pedal pressure every time is tricky. I keep triggering abs. At the end of your message you are talking about a difference between mid engine and front engine cars? For mid engine you need to be on gas right? I have mr2 turbo in real life and want to track it at some point. Any suggestion what cars in Sims would best prepare me for that?
@beambox1421

@@advocatesdevil7064 yeah weight distribution of different engine layout affect the dynamic of driving. I'm not an expert, I don't have any experience in real racing, I'm only a mechanical engineering manager working in automotive industry... Many parameters ca affects cars dynamic, suspension type and geometry. All car will react differently in some conditions. The MR2 has a reputation like the S2000 for "snap oversteer" some drift or dirt racing can help to build some reflexes to catch it if it ever happen to you (not over correct). I guess you need to be careful for overconfidence and take your time.

Why do you use 100% of your brakes? Doesn't the ABS turn up at this point?

It's only for a very short period if I do. But you're correct, the most efficient braking is keeping it out of the abs 👍
