The Hydrow, Ergatta, and Aviron rowers are all excellent models. They’re all on our best rowers list, but we like and recommend them for different reasons.
Starting with the construction, the Aviron is 97” long versus the Hydrow and Ergatta which are only 86” long. The Aviron does require a bit more space to use, but it folds in half and can be transported the easiest out of the three rowers. The Ergatta and Hydrow have front transportation wheels so when you lift the back of the rails, they can be moved around. They also both store upright, however, the Hydrow requires purchasing a storage kit separately to do this. They both require a high enough ceiling height to be stored this way also.
The Hydrow is the most difficult to move around though because it weighs 145 lbs. Comparatively, the Aviron is only 97 lbs and Ergatta is around 103 lbs with water in the tank. For weight capacities, the Ergatta handles up to 500 lbs, while the Aviron has a 397 lb limit, and the Hydrow has a 375 lb limit. So, all of these rowers can handle users of most sizes.
Their designs are what really make them differ. The Ergatta is made of wood and sits the lowest to the ground, making it more difficult to get on and off of, especially for users with limited mobility. The seat sits just 12” above the floor. The Aviron on the other hand has the tallest rail and seat at 20” high. The Hydrow is also pretty easy to get on and off because the seat is 16” high.
For comfortability, we prefer the Hydrow Rower’s seat. It has nice cushioning and we like the contouring. The Aviron has the largest seat, which definitely feels supportive, but the cushioning has less give and it feels stiffer. The Ergatta has the smallest seat, but we find the cushioning to be fairly comfortable.
The Ergatta also has narrower footboards than the other two rowers, which can make some users feel a little cramped. We prefer the wider footboards on the Hydrow and Aviron. All of the pedals on these rowers can accommodate a wide range of sized users, however, and they all work with any type of athletic shoe. Plus, they have adjustable straps to keep your feet secure.
The content is also where these rowers differ. They all have attached touch screens and come with subscription content. The content is a big draw to each of these rowers so we recommend getting a membership with all of them.
The Hydrow is often called the Peloton of rowers because of its content. It features a large library of trainer-led classes filmed outdoors on the water. The instructors are professionals who guide you through class, and there’s music integrated into each workout. The Hydrow offers a more classic guided rowing experience and we recommend it for users looking for this kind of training.
The Ergatta on the other hand has gamified content and free rowing. The games have a competitive nature and allow you to compete against other members in races. Some of the games use progressive overload to encourage you to progress over time, and they’re structured like complete workouts. There isn’t any guided rowing, so it might not be best for beginners needing form correction. However, the Ergatta is a nice choice if you’re competitive and want out-of-the-box, gamified content.
The Aviron Rower also features gaming content. There are 2D and 3D games. Some involve shooting at targets or even swimming away from a shark. There are also others that are structured more like workouts. The Aviron has a lot more than games though, and it offers the most variety. You can stream from apps like Netflix, race against professional athletes, and take coached and guided workouts on and off the rower. The Aviron is great if you want a lot of choices when it comes to entertainment on a rower.
Overall, we like each of these rowers but for different reasons. We recommend all of them, and we suggest considering whichever one aligns the closest with your goals and needs.
