In this video I go over why and how I keep a few gallons of emergency water stored and treating it with bleach to keep it fresh.
I also talk about the Military Water Cans I use to store the water.

Thank you! especially for the O-ring links. I had purchased four of the 10L Scepters and between the mould flashing and mechanical sympathy (not tightening beyond a reasonable twisting effort) I experienced leaks at the cap assembly. There are two currently available plastic wrench [Edit: versions] found on Ama-zone for these caps. Apparently I'll need one. The O-rings are insurance, spares, etc but your video, here, is a tremendous help. Thanks for your efforts. Cheers.

Great video. Thanks for the links too. I'd like to compare these against the Scepters. I'm sure they're the same thing and are equivalent, but would like to see them side by side. Hurricane season is upon us and I needed a few new water containers. I don't tend to store water for 6 months, but usually fill them up when a storm approaches.

I've always been told that plastic water containers can absorb the taste of cement over time into the water. I store my containers on a piece of plywood or something similar avoiding any direct contact with cement to prevent this. Thanks for the video.

Great tip. I've heard the same and keep them on a sheet of plywood as well. Thanks!

Random Gene, thanks for the great content! I was not aware of LCI when I bought my Scepter jerry can earlier today at REI. Paid $55 after applying a 20% discount. I love REI, but my remaining cans I need won't be coming from them. Thank you!

Thanks for the information about the bleach. I didn't know you were supposed to add that. I just bought two of the blue Scepter ones with flexible nozzles. The company sent 4 by mistake. Wrote them back, waiting to hear from them.

We have three 15 gallon containers, with spigots attached, along with three 5 gallon containers. Add to that, a stack of Costco 1 gallon six packs and we are good to go insofar as drinking water and cooking for a week or two.

While the old "jerry" style cans are more mobile. I've found for IN HOME water storage that Aquatainers work quite well, and are actually stackable. I use the 7 gallon size.

Great video! Thanks for saving us time and doing the research. Do you recommend a extension spout that fits the LCI? I’ve seen so,e for the scepter but wanted to assure an exact fit.

Did you lubricate the O-rings before installing them; or do you think it's not needed?
@RandomGene

I did not. But if you find it necessary you could probably use a very light coat of petroleum jelly or something like it.

Thanks for the helpful video! I just bought an army surplus one for cheap (only 10 bucks), and it seems to be new! I do have a question. Do you clean your cans before filling them with water, and if so how do you do it? I can't reach the bottom of the can with my arm.

I did clean mine. I filled mine 1/3rd full with clean water. Added about a table spoon of dishwashing detergent and 1/4 cup of bleached. I then closed the cap and shook it up real well. I then dumped it out and rinsed the can out real good. Once I finished rinsing it out, I rinsed it out again just to make sure. LOL. My thinking is the detergent will break up any dirt or oils and the bleach will disinfect it. Thanks for watching!

In many American city's it is already used to keep the water clean. Small amounts are safe to consume. As stated in the video, it is used to prevent micro-organisms from growing in the water making it dangerous to consume.
