The day has finally come, to share my score of the "Treble Test Piece"! So many of you have asked for this over the years, and although I don't think it's finished yet I wanted to share this first iteration with you all! I also do a tutorial in this video, showing every step of how to play it properly, which I hope you will find to be helpful!

Chris Dickson had a good idea to include a hashtag in this thread, but it included a typo so I will place the correct one here. #TrebleTestPiece Feel free to use this hashtag to search other versions of the Treble Test Piece.

If you download the score, you will see that he did copyright it, which was the wise thing to do. He implicitly licensed it as free for all to use, at least as far as public performance. He's silent on other uses, such as derivative works. I think it would have been in his, and others', best interests if he had stated explicit license terms, perhaps using the Creative Commons language. (Edited for clarity and the inevitable typos.)

I liked your detailed analysis of your treble test piece. A couple of months ago I used an early version to try out 6 grand pianos before I settled on an older Yamaha C3 (maybe later I'll put together a KZfaq video and send the link). This was quite useful in getting a feel for each piano's action, touch and sound. I now play your latest version with some minor changes except for the repeated middle section where the first time through I use your earlier version and then repeat with the current one. I am interested in listening to possible tutorials you suggested and like your speaking style and presentation.

I have used your videos to do research about purchasing a piano and have made the decision to buy a D20. Then I came across this video, (absolutely beautiful piece), and would highly encourage you to continue doing instructional videos. The level of detail you have when teaching is incredible. That of someone who would cost me 120$ an hour of lesson. Subscribed; keep up the good work! 👍

The only issue is that it has about 8 copyright holders, if memory serves me correctly. (Gotta love the record labels, am I right?) That exact song is actually why I wrote this treble test piece, since I kept getting claims on Earth Angel and wanted something pretty to play in the videos.

James, I thought your tutorial approach was outstanding! So much info and patient explanation for pianists of all levels! Bravo! How about a tutorial for the 3rd movement of The Moonlight Sonata in your amazing style? [I'm not sure which software you used to transcribe your piece, for example Finale, but could I gently suggest you remove (or explain) the 2nd layer rests that appear in the midst of some measures? I recognized them for what they are but, for less experienced pianists, they may wonder what a half rest is doing between the staffs.] I never miss a review and, having once lived in Massachusetts for 30 years, I loved your travelogues of the area!

I think doing more tutorials is an excellent idea - I'm sure you'll have a lot of followers. One thing to think about (I don't have the answer!) is that there are already a lot of online tutorials, books and courses on learning to play. The challenge, for anybody, is how to offer something that is unique rather than merely duplicating all the others. Featuring your own compositions is one possibility.
