The Kitchener Waterloo Bonsai Society goes on a collection trip in the Canadian wilderness!

Hi Nigel,.. the way I get trees out now. I have a two limb saws one for limbs & one nice stiff one to stick down in the soil and saw around the tree, I have taken some very sizable trees and when I cut them out, the tree barely knows it's been cut out. Thinks it's just been root pruned. Really like your videos. Michael @ Bozen Bonsai

maybe those who find the background music 'annoying' don't realise they were playing Amazing Grace, by a brass band with real musicians. It is by the grace of creation there are both randomly occurring tress and your own self.

You have a good humor at 0:44 - 0:51 when you wrote Nothern White Pine Pinus Stobus and then Human Homo Sapien :-) :-) :-)

Very funny, but that should have been: Pinus strobus, and Homo sapien - and italicized when possible, (I don't know how to do that here, or if it is possible).

Okay Nigel it's warming up here in Thunder Bay and I'm wondering how to time the potting of my trunk chopped specimens. Does it matter when I do It?

The ideal time is when the buds are just about to open. All the energy is transferred from the roots up into the trunk and branches. The tree doesn't rely on the roots to open up the buds. Once the buds are open, they start providing energy to grow new roots. It is better to be too early than too late for re potting. Without some roots, the buds will open up and then swivel up and die.

How would you recommend harvesting a cedar in South Louisiana? Did a walk through the woods in my backyard and found several but the trunks are about 5-7 in around. Can I harvest them the same way I would a Bald Cypress? Everything I know about bonsai has been from trial and error,more error I'd say..lol..now that I found I have cancer and have tons of free time I want to really apply myself before I die. Right now I have a pretty nice crype Mrytle I've been working with for about 6 yrs and a bald cypress bought from a nursery q few yrs ago,it's currently in what used to be my goldfish pond waiting for the nabari to grow a little. I have 3 bald cypress marked for harvesting in February. Any help any of my fellow bonsai enthusiast can give would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks, David

+David Nelams Hi David, I don't think the cedars would survive if cut back and dug up. It would be best to reduce the height in stages to force back budding down at the base of the tree. It is best to leave a good amount of green on the tree. I have seen cedars cut back to stumps and they have survived by putting out all kinds of new growth at the base, but I think this would be a risky operation. Cedars can be started from cuttings if keep in a small greenhouse. All the best to you, my father is going through the same thing at 84. I've been thinking a lot of my own mortality lately, but when working on trees, it takes me to a world where your troubles disappear for a while.

Of course it is important to identify which 'cedar' we are talking about, as many trees are called 'cedar'. These in the video appear to be Eastern white cedars, or Thuja occidentalis, aka arborvitae. I'm not sure if they would thrive in your climate, or not. They do tend to be fickle about backbudding. If arborvitae hedges grow in your area, your best bet may be to find one that someone is tearing out, and save some for bonsai! Red cedars, Juniperous virginiana, aka Eastern redcedar probably grows in your area and can make an interesting bonsai subject. Best of luck on your bonsai adventures.

I harvested a Larch this summer too. Actually its twins twisted together, about 5 - 8 years old I'm guessing. Already potted, pruned and wired. not sure how I am going to winter it as yet. Any suggestions? Thanks

+Mitchell Woodhouse You can bury the pot with the tree in the ground for the winter. Larches are very hardy. If you have a garden shed or an unheated garage, this works well also. Just keep a pile of snow on the pot so on warm days it will melt and water the tree.

Spring is the best time for most species, but mid summer works also. Many of the trees go dormant in the hot weather, unfortunately the insects do not! Much of success in collecting involves getting as much fine roots as possible and good aftercare of your collected tree. Be sure you have permission also!

very cool video Nigel its great that you guys were able to get out and collect trees with permission. Also its great you got your son out to enjoy the weather and participate. Do you run the KW bonsai society ? I forgot to ask where to keep your outdoor bonsai displayed in a greenhouse or on benches?

Growing Things It was a great day, I think I spent more time enjoying the sights, then collecting trees! I am the current president of the club. This is my sixth time as president. I have been a member for 17 years. Time flies. My trees are kept on benches in mostly full sun. I kept my tropicals in the greenhouse for the first time last summer, but all other years they were on the outdoor benches. I am going to redo the greenhouse this spring to get more light in. The only trees I am going to keep in the greenhouse this summer are the trees that get aerial roots. Last year the greenhouse was just too crowded.

very cool must be a hell of a time as el presidente lol Do you have serious issues with critters messing with your trees while they are out on the benches and if so how do you keep them off

Growing Things You have bribe the squirrels with lots of nuts! Yes I have the occasional squirrel digging in my trees, but the birds are worse. Just when your moss is looking really good, they come and kick it off, looking for worms. I just keep picking up the pieces and re plant them. I think having the chickens out, helps keep the squirrels away and my benches are away from the larger trees. I think that helps a bit also?

do you keep the nutts at another part of yard to bribe them lol the birds don't seem to bother my trees but I never catch them. yeah I have trees at various parts of the yard so the squirrels have free reign
