One of your best tutorials ever. I normally prefer watching you work with oils. More satisfying viewing than acrylics. But this video is totally enjoyable. The evolution of this painting from the photo was quite remarkable. So many great details. Thanks for the inspiration.

Oh yay! Acrylics! I have no problem with black. I'm currently painting a scarlet tanager (bird) and the wings are black. I've only seen a few minutes of this and I love it already!

I am SO glad to hear you say you like to use black. I have for so long always felt guilty whenever I would pull out a tube of black paint, after hearing artist say you would never use it. But I think from seeing you, and some others, that using black is perfectly acceptable. Thank you!!

I have to disagree about having to have a reference of some kind to start a painting. I am one who primarily makes it up as I go along. I'll be 52 in October and I never saw that method of scraping the knife to add detail to a painting, in this case the gravel path. Where in the world have I been hiding?? Amazing technique, and those holes in trees to show sky behind is nuts, has a photographic quality to the whole painting.

Unfortunately, the tenant in the unit underneath me was very adamant in her remarks to me in finding a more structurally resilient solution.

I think I'll try this one tomorrow, Kevin. You give your paintings names? I'm currently working on a painting with a wooden fence with black glass bottles on top of it for target practice. Is it possible to paint of a motion action scene in progress of a bottle shattering in air as it's falling? Can you paint this?

Kevin have you ever used oils over acrylics, for details? I have seen it done before and I was thinking about trying it. For the last 5 years I have been using acrylics. I have just received oil paints but I’m a tad intimated by them! I have seen oil on acrylics and I have been thinking about trying that
