I've seen a lot of wire sculptures online that claim to be "tutorials" but when you go to watch them they don't actually explain anything. They do show you how but there's no tips. I'm here to rectify that. This is a real, homegrown, down to earth walk through on how to make a copper wire tree.
I make my leaves a little different then what I've seen others do. I was inspired to make them this way from architecture sketches of trees and bushes, and I think this way is faster and easier.
The wire I used is from Cat3 networking wire that I picked up at a garage sale for 5$. I think it's roughly 26 gauge copper. I used 225 ft of the original cable which gave me 600 strands that were 3 ft long.
The wire stripping jig I made is a scrap piece of plywood with some holes drilled into it that was a little larger than the wire. Then I screwed on a razor blade that covered about 25% of the hole. The trick is to pull the wire through at the right angle.
I hope you enjoyed!

youre right about most of the tutorials being about as useful as a chocolate frying pan. Yours isn't quite what I need, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Thanks.

Beautiful! FYI,, there is a product that jewelry crafters use called Tool Magic that you can dip pliers in to create a white rubber surface that won't scratch your wire. It's removable, and actually can be re-done when it wears down. Might be good to know about.

My friends, brother and I used to sneak into the phone companies yard in the 80s and steal strips of cable from these large spools. We'd peel the wires from the plastic and make these jewelry pieces out of them. They were hella cool...I wish I remember how to make them...

Instead of twisting the 2 wired by hand make a small gig or holder. Then attach 2 a hand drill head u control the speed and direction the drill twists the wired 2gether & much faster
@BlanchBrothersStudio
@BlanchBrothersStudio 3 жыл бұрын
For most of it I actually used a pair of safety wire twisters. VERY fast! But for the ends of the branches it was too delicate to use so I did it by hand.

Thanks for the video, but I do have one question, won't the bare copper wire eventually turn green? Are you OK with that, or do you think it would be good to spray it with some kind of clear coat to try to prevent that aged effect over time?
@BlanchBrothersStudio
@BlanchBrothersStudio 4 жыл бұрын
It will turn green eventually but that might take 20 years or more,... maybe longer because its inside. But you are right that I could clear coat it to protect the color.

Hey @Devin's Art Studio I know this video is now two years old but do you have any tips for a smaller tree or more like a bonsai? like 10-12 inch big? Just things like how much copper wire I should use and so on :)
@BlanchBrothersStudio
@BlanchBrothersStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Typically your going to measure a length of wire and 1/3 of that length will be the roots, a 1/3 will be the trunk, and the rest is the canopy. (Generally...doesn't need to be exact.) So if you want a 6" tree you're going to use about 10" pieces. 3" for the roots and you loose some hight as you twist it. Hope this helps

My biggest problem was getting the main trunk and top level branches to combine and not untwist. I even tried copper plumbing solder and it didn't work. Any suggestions there? How did you get it to not untwist with the rod inside? Thanks!
@BlanchBrothersStudio
@BlanchBrothersStudio 4 жыл бұрын
I used two large channel lock pliers to really over twist the trunk. If that doesnt work for you, you can try twisting each wire in pairs first, and then twisting everything together into a trunk. The exra twists should give everything more grip and hold better
@burtonkent4549
@burtonkent4549 4 жыл бұрын
@@BlanchBrothersStudio Thanks. I tried overtwisting too, didn't quite work. Part of it was the wire was soft, I used strands from 12 gauge wire, and my tree was about 16 inches tall.
@BlanchBrothersStudio

@@burtonkent4549 wow! thats some thick wire compared to what I used. Try twisting up the trunk and putting tape around it. Then build the rest of the tree before taking the tape off
