Climbing and Topping a 230ft Douglas Fir. The Tree had split at the bottom and was leaning hard over a major highway. The tree had to be cut down in sections to avoid collateral damage to the adjacent trees and the highway. The video shows some of the cutting involved. #Dangerous jobs #Tree falling #Tree Cutting #Lumberjack #Arborist #Vancouver Island

After seeing you all these years it's hard to think about not seeing you with your "don't give 2 shits whether you agree with me or not" attitude making videos. You have shown me and a lot of other people things that we use in our jobs every day. You have given us views from the tops of 200+ tall trees to beautiful forest floors to the edge of roaring seas. You should be proud of the content you have put out on your channel and if you personally think you can't put out anything that you feel good about then I agree with you. You should know that people respect you enough that they would watch you cut fire wood if that's the only content you put out. If this is indeed the last of your videos, I thank you for that beautiful view that I may never get to see and all the lessons that you tried or inadvertently given to me. Hi Reg, I love watching you work and have great respect for anyone who can do this with the devotion that you have to your trade. Love the scenery and being outdoors with you. I am never going to be able to experience what it is to be in the top of a tree with a split below me and a heavy lean. Thank goodness. But it’s not all about the tree work. This is how you reach people so that they stop for a minute and listen to what a free thinking person has to say. I appreciate the time you take to put videos out and would miss the treat it is when I see you posting something new. Thanks for today’s treat. Stay safe.

I have a friend who's an arborist and I've wasted hours just watching him because it's so interesting. I still lived at home then, so thankfully I had my parents reminding me to get back to what I was supposed to be doing, or I'd have sat there watching for longer. This stuff is really interesting--even the normal stuff. It's really cool to have the details about why you're doing the job (the split and the lean) and things that concern you like the wind.

Reg, you're a legend. I understand the feeling of not feeling you're able to top the things you've already done. Especially in the same trade, and taping it for 13+ years now. I'll admit, the trees on the east coast here in the states are nowhere near that height! Mind you I see deciduous trees mainly. The biggest white pine I've ever seen here was 100' shorter than that one. I was still blown away at the size of it. Keep on doing what makes you happy. Weather it's making content or taking a break from it. Getting burnt happens. But, tomorrow is always a mystery and full of new possibilities.

I did this in the late 60s to very early 70s. Toe spikes , belt and a heavier chain saw. Trained on cedar trees ( 30 to 45 ft.) for post and local saw mill planks, siding and shingles. The trees were from dense old growth . Later pitch pine for poles. When I had 800hrs in I got white pine. At the time I didn't see it as dangerous although there was a guy who almost lost a leg from a bad break and an older fellow who lost his fingers tips. The most difficult part was topping. While your doing it it's close quarters and I didn't really get a since of height till after I topped. I had an small camera and would take a picture at the top to get a sense later of the surrounding geography. I've since lost all but one photo that had a lake shot from high elevation. Instamatic black and white photo. In retrospect it was pretty dangerous but when you're young danger is not the concern that it becomes when you become older. Now it's what the hell was I thinking. College tuition and book money lol.

Much respect that wind and waiting in hazardous trees ain’t no fun but at 180ish up...WoW! I know you were thrilled to pop that top and the guys were super excited. I just did a Leyland Cypress in the wind near to being uprooted so we had to brace it prior to the climb but man only about 15-30ft lol and I looked the same way you did because waiting on the wind is one thing but having to wait on traffic 15-30min at a time is another when all you are trying to focus on is getting the ‘sails’ off which is what I call brushy limbs or limbs with leaves because they are wind sails until you pop the top. Great work as usual and honestly Reg real tree guys really appreciate the content you put out and your take on things because we all grow seeing how to tackle these monsters that we never have to climb due to our environment and true more guys are filming now more than ever but only a few stand out more than the rest and as weird as this may sound you are a dinosaur on YT, a true All-Star, and you have a legacy out here and the snub sub rating means nothing to the value you’ve added to the trade by your vids through the years. Thx and great work as always man!
