How to make Ghost Swirl Cold Process Soap (Technique Video #29) Soap Challenge, October 2020
Here is a look at how I made this Ghost Swirl cold process soap using a marbling/ebru technique. Throughout the video, I discuss the three different ways water is figured for soap making. Stay tuned to the end of the video for tips in the “What I Learned“ portion. This technique was featured in the October 2020 Soap Challenge hosted by Amy Warden and founded by Clara Lindberg.

This is one of the coolest examples of how water percentage affects soap structure. Never would have thought of that. It is a beautiful, elegant design and composition. Thank you for sharing this information in such a carefully documented way and your teaching is beautiful and relaxing.

@guelle01 3 жыл бұрын
@@TreeMarieSoapworks it didn’t separate, it always sits a little. But the scrapings were different. I think it is the temperatures, like you say, the butters can’t start to solidify and I think that my shea butter started doing just that. I was just too lazy to remelt everything and cool it down. But your video brought me back to the ground, as to speak. You have a huge influence out there and thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences. @TreeMarieSoapworks

I don't used alcohol, but maybe I would if I don't cover the soap and use a high water amount. I always cover the soap except in rare situations like this. I don't get soda ash when I use the water discount that I mentioned pared with covering my soap. If it is humid, I keep it covered for another day.

Gorgeous soaps. I was too busy and waited too late for this challenge. Only gave myself time for one batch at last min and it has too much crumbling going on for some reason so I didn't enter it. I wish I was able to make such astute observations about cause and effect in soap making like you do. Also how do you have an oven that can go down to 145 degrees?! Are you in the US? So frustrating that our ovens only go down to 170F.
@TreeMarieSoapworks
@TreeMarieSoapworks 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, too bad, you will get there. I still am guessing a lot of the time. I am in the US. My oven has a "keep warm" setting and I can set it as low as 145F.

For clarification, when you said you would have not even put this soap in the oven, is that because you were hoping for more color definition? Are you thinking the excess heat caused there to be less color contrast between the three layers? All of your ghost swirls turned out great. This is definitely a beautiful technique.
@TreeMarieSoapworks
@TreeMarieSoapworks 3 жыл бұрын
The goal was to only have the high water soap go through gel. I think the low water soap that got dragged into the center went through gel as well, causing less definition between the different batters. I would like to avoid that. You'll have to read Auntie Clara's articles. Her links are in the description.

I made turmeric soap and it came out so sticky. Its been over 24 hrs and I still cannot unmold. I even messed up the soap trying to force it out.. Any idea why?

I am wondering, would you obtain the same effect if you do one normal batch of soap and divide into two parts, and then add water in one of them after trace?

If your normal batch has quite a big water discount, that would probably work. I used 15% "water as a percentage of oil weight" for my low water batch. That is near a one to one ratio of water and lye. The high water batch was 40%, which is a 2.8 to one water to lye ratio. My normal batch is 25%, which is around a 1.8 to one ratio. The normal batch might not be different enough to make much contrast between the two water amounts. If you start with a one to one water to lye ratio, that would probably have enough contrast between the two parts.

No, you cannot use less water than the lye weight. If you are splitting the batter evenly as I did, the lye amount will be the same for each part because the oils are the same. (Remember, the lye calculation is based only on the oils/butters and not the water/liquid amount.) I used 15%, 40%, and 40% "Water as a Percentage of Oil Weight." So if a third of my oil weight is 11.5 oz, and I use 15%, 40%, 15%, respectively, for the batch I made, the water would be 1.72 oz, 4.6 oz, and 1.72 oz. (The lye would be whatever is calculates to be from the 11.5 oz of oils.)

@@TreeMarieSoapworks Do you have a video explaining the three different ways to calculate the water content (water as percentage of oil, lye concentration (the one I am familiar with), and water and lye) ration in your recipe?

@@TreeMarieSoapworks thank you! Will look into that one. It has a small head I see and that would work with small oil quantities...
