Here I talk about the Pseudotsuga menziesii tree, more commonly known as the Douglas-fir. This tree is widespread throughout western North America, and is very common throughout the Pacific Northwest. This conifer member of the pine family is known for its fast growth and use as a popular Christmas tree. I cover how to identify this unique tree species, as well as a few things you can do with it when you encounter one.

I like how you contrasted the tree that might be confused with the Douglasfir. Your descriptions were clear and helpful.

Thank you for that very informative lesson Euair! I've watched about 20 videos for identifying Douglas Firs and Eastern White Pines and the search is over for Douglas Firs and I hope one day you do a video on White pines :) Stellar work!

Thanks for the video, I do bonsai and collected 2 Doug Firs last Nov, they are both doing well, one was from a place that people shoot guns so it has some twisted bark and bullet scars, now it will have a much better life, another 3 I grew from seeds and now one is over 2 feet tall and really has long branch growth, some over 9" so it's very healthy and beautiful trees.

@0:27 What is it about dry soil that allows them to grow tall?

The roots require compact soil to penetrate and latch into. This helps give the tree its strength because the douglas-fir is known to grow very tall and needs a strong base. As the sapling matures, it becomes much more shade intolerant and uses its size and strength to obtain sunlight higher up in the air.
