⚙️ Interview with John Bradley ⚙️ Trek Brand in the 90's (Gary Fisher, Klein, LeMond, Bontrager and many more):
• As The Wheel Turns, So...
In the 1990s, Trek Bicycle expanded its reach by acquiring other bicycle manufacturers. While Trek remains the main brand, they kept these acquisitions separate for a period, with their own catalogs and marketing. Here are the prominent Trek-owned brands from the 1990s:
✅ Bontrager Cycles (1995): Originally a one-man shop founded by Keith Bontrager in 1979, Bontrager Cycles focused on high-quality bicycle components like handlebars, stems, and wheels. After the acquisition, Bontrager continued to develop and manufacture components specifically for Trek bikes, while also expanding their own brand offerings.
✅ Gary Fisher (1993): A pioneering mountain bike brand known for its comfortable geometry and innovative designs, founded by Gary Fisher in 1983. Acquired by Trek in 1993.
✅ Klein (1995): A high-end American brand recognized for its advanced aluminum frame technology using the Bexadrenal process. Founded in 1982 and acquired by Trek in 1995.
✅ LeMond (1995): Named after cycling legend Greg LeMond, these bikes focused on high-performance road bikes. Founded in 1983 and acquired by Trek in 1995.
By acquiring these brands, Trek aimed to diversify its product line and cater to a wider range of cyclists. While some of these brands were eventually phased out and integrated under the Trek umbrella, their influence can still be seen in Trek's bikes today.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”

The good ol' days. Arizona had a great state championship MTB series in the 90s.

I worked and raced for a shop that sold Trek. I never ended up riding/racing a Trek. But I rode/raced a Lemond Poprad. A Klein Quantum and a Klein Mantra.

It looks like Pon Holdings actually works in a longstanding collaboration with Volkswagen Group rather than owning them. I about dropped my coffee when you said they owned Audi and Porsche because Volkswagen Group is enormous. That would really be something! Great guest and interview.

Thanks for this video. It was educational. Towards the end of the video, Mr. Bradley noted that Tesla and other electric car companies are disrupting the status quo of the automobile industry. What was not mentioned is the effect of electric bicycle sales on the bicycle industry. It appears there are a great many makers of electric bicycles. I see a lot of people riding them in my area. Maybe, you could cover some aspect of this in a future video.

I, too, see a lot of eBikes on the trails, about half of which may be a good topic to go over.

I always thought the Trek-Kleins and Trek-Lemonds to be excellent bikes. I still ride my 2001 Klein Attitude regularly despite it having 26 in wheels and v-brakes. I love the simplicity of it. In my opinion bike tech peaked in the early 2000s. We had all the good without the over complication. Thank you for this video!

Buying brands and shutting them down is a way to limit competition. Opening a shop to dominate the local market increases your pricing power. Co marketing a pro team w a component manufacturing increases a companies profit margin by increasing pricing power and at the same time allow the bike company to benefit from group discounts. The group discounts make it harder for smaller frame manufacturers to compete. Limiting distribution to a few distributors also increases market power. The bike industry is an interesting business case study from a marketing standpoint. Marketing does 2 things convince people they made the right decision after they made it and eliminate the social risk.

Gary Fisher 1994 catalog (under Trek) showed carbon fiber road bikes, I don’t think they ever made it to production though.

They did make a few OCLV carbon bikes that were Trek stamped Fisher/Lemond in the first few years. (I Think, could be wrong)

@@IKnowAGuyBicycles the frame....and anything made with the multi million dollar fabrication and tube mitering machine Klein used. It was acquired by Klein from a military aerospace manufacturer and made the frames to the highest standards humans are capable of. Literally. tRek sold that machine as yet another action of short term profit over quality and customer loyalty

I drank the Trek Cool-Aid for years, and it's now primarily reminiscent of working with my parent's shop (Parker Bikes) in the 90s. I do have hot/cold feelings for them now. I try not to bring that negativity to my channel, but some feelings and actions about some of these companies are hard to ignore.
