All season rolling now:) I also got rid of that seat and those handlebars for a less "cuppy" seat and some VO granola bars. I agree, it's just fun and actually performs pretty well. The Marin Larkspur is just as fun.

I have a 2002 5200 triple in Smoke Carbon finish that I bought new 22 yrs ago. I’m in the process of overhauling it and scored a N.O.S. Dura Ace BB 7703 on EBay that I’m installing. The original BB felt notchy and a tiny bit gritty inside so I wanted to upgrade it. After removing it it didn’t feel notchy anymore so I think it might have been over torqued when it was built originally. Looking forward to my first ride on it in who knows how long.

Trek dealers in bigger markets can switch to smaller brands, but there's a really good chance that Trek will open a corporate store, taking a bunch of those customers away. Listen, we are doing this to ourselves. We embraced imported goods, and we praised the 'disruptors' who discovered that, by turning careers into low-wage, dead-end jobs, they could enrich themselves. This is a continuation of that, but more perverse, because most bike shop jobs were already dead-end jobs that can't support a normal, adult lifestyle. Specialized couldn't stand that its dealers were making money, so they began the process of eliminating them. Trek sees that the door has been kicked open, and they're happy to walk right through. Ultimately, the goal is the same amount of money spent on cycling, with less of it going to workers.

In the past, the bike business had a wide diversity of suppliers, products, and retailers. Those wild, fun days are ending. The Treks, Shimanos, and Pearl Izumis will dominate. They will have pricing power. Like other mature industries, consumers will have fake choices. (Accord or Camry?) Unspoken price fixing will prevail.
@stevengagnon47776 күн бұрын
The Lemonds had the best geometry and ride of the road bikes that came out of Trek. The Treks were a Trek. The Kleins were Kleins. But all the years and miles that Greg Lemond had in the saddle showed up in his bikes. You could ride them all day and still be fresh at the end of the day. Making that long decent worth the work. The handling with these is so natural it's almost like a dream. With new wheels even at $1500( especially considering it wasn't used much) it's a bargain for long recreational rides. The triple has a wide range of gears and no real penalties . I can get 30mm tires in my Zurich ( I don't remember the clearance for ths bike, but it probably had clearance for 28mm tubulars for the spring classics ,yeah old school tubular paves were what I used ) 28 mm should be just fine for a modern set of wide alloy rims and 28mm tires ....worth the investment, because the ride is timeless. Seem to remember this road very nice too since the fork and stays were well dampened for the road shcck.

A lot of this started with the manufacturers catering to the elite buyers and forgot about the grassroots riders. The blue collar under 50k a year family. Now people even the elites arent buying the $14k bikes. We want these companies to market to the consumers that can afford the sub $500.00 bikes. Look at Walmart and Kent bikes. All over 150.00 for the bikes. No less than 250.00 for their higher end bikes. This is why I stick with used bikes and recondition and flip them for a fraction of the retail price.

The Rolf wheels the rear ones just fail period....pretty much a design flaw. It not so much a matter of them being overtensioned. It's that the rim couldn't handle proper tension, especially with the spokes paired and so close together. Just use it as a bargaining chip when buying because you will need a new rear wheel at the minimum and probably a front if not now certainly down the road. The thing is with the relatively low spoke count you need the extra tension to compensate or reduce your weight to 120 pounds.

I agree completely that this move by Trek will hurt what may be left of independent Trek dealers. As a former Trek dealer (bike shop owner) and also working for David's World back in the day, I realized much too late that the bicycle distributers did not give a flip about the dealers that bought their bicycles. The profit margins on bicycles ranged anywhere from -2% to 3% tops and it was the bicycles that tied up all of your capital and precious rented floor space! With the consumer buying direct the abilty to cushion the blow by the customer buying a pair of shorts or anything else just went out the window. You are aslo correct that to survive you must be your own brand. I knew that from the beginning, but I succumbed the the theory of you must grow or die (larger store more bikes floored).

Bikes in general have become more expensive with lower quality components. I feel bad for the local bike shops that struggle, but I won’t pay full price for what is being offered now. On top of that, small bikes generally have to be special orders, meaning full price and no ability to try the bike before buying it. Bikes today are too expensive for that.

This opens great opportunity for smaller brands that do support the local shops and this will drive prices lower. That’s if that can survive this rough patch.

What effect do you think this has on mid size and boutique brands that don't have direct to consumer sales? Will Trek, specialized, and the online only brands (canyon, polygon, etc.) disrupt dealer networks to a point where small to midsize companies no longer have a sales outlet if they don't sell online?
@IKnowAGuyBicycles6 күн бұрын
They need to focus on the customer experience. Especially the new to cycling. Having more niche fun bike lines like Kona, Jamis and others can still drive the sales they need. But it is really how the shops are going to represent themselves.

I don’t think going to online sales will help Trek much. Their bikes are overpriced boat anchors. In the world of xc and racing, bike weight vs price is one of the first things I’m looking at. Sub 25lbs bike at Trek, Supercaliber 24.65 lbs $8999 Canyon Lux 22lbs $6999. Would never buy a Trek- they lost their trail cred:/

@newbieuserguy68996 күн бұрын
$6,999? $8,999? The average of all bikes sold is around $800. Trek lives on Marlins and Verves. If normal bike riders can't do test rides, many are going to have worse experiences with their ill-fitting bikes.
@1anad9mit778 күн бұрын
Why are Trek and Specialized so valuable to local bike shops? Do many shops believe they wouldn't survive without them? Several bike shops in my area do not carry either brand. One has Marin, Felt, and Scott. Another only carries more obscure Italian brands, such as Basso. I think the reputation of the bike shop is much more valuable than the brands they carry, like you said Justin. I own an older Raleigh competition road bike and a Bianchi endurance/sport bike. I purchased the latter from the Italian bike shop because it was one of the few inexpensive bikes in 2001 that came with Campagnolo, and the mechanic knew how to do certain modifications to Campy. I have cerebral palsy on the right side of my body, so I can't use the right brake lever or brifter. The mechanic was able to set up the left brifter, so it would control the rear derailleur. I am able to shift a bar end shifter with my right hand to control the 3x derailleur. The mechanic now owns the shop, and he is still open-minded about unusual set ups. Not all bike shops are willing to do weird stuff Bike shops, that are willing to make modifications, are invaluable to me regardless of what brands they carry. This move by Trek may make it easier to bring a Trek to my favorite shop, if I decide I to buy one.

My biggest takeaway from all this is that neither consumers nor brands understand the value of the local bike shop anymore. Not sure how we walk that back. Service won’t pay the bills in a retail space for small markets and the pool of knowledgeable employees for better customer service in a constantly changing industry is rare nowadays even for specialty shops. The effects won’t be immediately seen so look forward to the synopsis in a few years 😂 Honestly, it’s amazing bike shops have outlasted every other retailer in existence. There was a reason for that, it’s community which has been under attack for past few years 😮
