My personal favorite scene from DS9, is Nog's speech, where he convinces Sisko to let him apply for Starfleet. Aron Eisenberg (RIP) was absolutely spectacular.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the greatest Star Trek series ever made.

Rewatching this right now. DS9 was the best trek. TNG brought me in, and VOY caught my attention, it was DS9 that stayed with me.

DS9 was more honest. It showed that the quadrant wasn't just happy go lucky humans in space with some odd dangerous creatures here and there. I loved that it showed it was still a challenge for people to move past base reactions

DS-9 showed us that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Technology may change but the basic human condition does not. It was realistic, the characters had their merits and their flaws. They were human...not cut and paste virtuous heroes. I point you to the episode where Sisko employs Garak to try and bring the Romulans into the war vs the Dominion. No spoilers forthcoming, but it was a revealing episode into how far a "good" person is willing to go depending on the stakes.

DS9 took both O'Brien and Worf from TNG and made us all associate them more with DS9 than their original show. Well done, DS9 writers.

Watched most if ds9 last year in quarantine. Just finally finished the final season this year, what an amazing show.

The world building, the attention to detail, the story threads, the characters and how they develop... I could sing this show's praises all dang day.

DS9 was my Trek, I was a little young for TNG. Trying to find DS9 taught me how to use the TV Guide channel lol. I loved the DS9 time travel episodes, primarily Trials and Tribble-ations and Little Green Men. Garak as a character really hooked me into the series, especially when Odo asked if he'd shoot a man in the back and Garak replied "well, it's the safest way".

DS9 will always be my favorite.

I would love to see a follow-up show, like 20 or 30 years later, to see how Bajor has develloped in this time, how the station has changed and so on. They could easily bring old characters back and introduce new ones.

I have always maintained that Next Gen had my favorite characters, but DS9 had my favorite stories.

DS9 took the Ferengi and Cardassians and really fleshed them out. The Ferengi were no longer bumbling little trolls only concerned with profit.

DS9 turned into my favorite Trek series. I love all the characters, they were more complex than the other series, with more complex motives and plots.

I think you missed a major one the focus on supporting characters

Section 31 should have been on this list. Showing that Starfleet wasn't the squeaky clean organization it originally was designed to be by Gene, gives it more realism and comparison to our modern day world.

The biggest reason why I liked DS9 was that it gave Worf the time to shine.

DS9, is the only series of the franchise that I still watch regularly to this day. So much more depth, interesting plots and characters really sucks me in.

DS9 is the best ( besides the original) with amazing stories and the best character development. I loved a Quark episode. The one with Sisko as Benny was awesome and the baseball game against the Vulcans was awesome.

Thank you for this! I've been singing DS9's praises for 28 years and counting. (I was 15 when it premiered.) And I vehemently defended it to all the naysayers who criticized it while refusing to give it a chance. It's great to see more and more people showing the series some love over the past 5 years or so, but it was lonely back in the 1990s when I proudly applauded its great storylines, top-notch character development, and fearless approach to bringing new ideas to an already amazing franchise. This is a great list, Marcus! I'm glad I watched it. :-D

I remember reading that Gene Roddenberry wanted to do three or four part episodes in the old Trek. But the production company overruled him, saying the audience would not have the attention span.

I love Deep Space Nine because the Star Trek Utopia as shown in TNG is great but you can't have a Utopia without Darkness, and seeing characters have to struggle with that was incredibly touching

I gotta tell you, DS9 is SUCH a good series. I wish they would remaster it.

This definitely became my favorite trek, edging out TNG. The writing more often than not was spot on. It ended at the right time but too soon at the same time. DS9 deserved a movie.

DS9 also showed us that desperation can led to dark places… like looking the other way when Mr. Garak blows up a Romulan Senator, or bombing a habitable planet with a lethal to humans chemical so only Cardassians could live there.

Roddenberry's rule on conflict was no conflict between Starfleet personnel. The reason the Bajorans and Quark and Odo were added was specifically for conflict among main characters.

I love Quark called Sisko out for his human arrogance by pointing out that Ferengis never had anything as barbaric as slavery, genocide, or countless wars like humans.

Re: #5, I'd also like to point out Sisko's reluctance to being involved in the holosuite caper in Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang. He points out that people like him weren't welcome in Vegas during that period. It's a poignant moment that nobody really dared to discuss during all the holosuite programs set in the past.

One of the things I loved about DS9 was the fact that many of it's episodes didn't end on a particularly upbeat note. Such episodes served to remind audiences that, while some species within the Star Trek Universe had managed to turn their worlds into a Utopia, others were still having to endure growing pains to achieve such a state. For example, in the Season One Episode "Duet," Major Kiera's investigation of a visiting Cardassian to the station leads her to realize that not all Cardassians are brutal oppressors. Some, like the Cardassian in this episode, was pretending to be a very infamous Gaul (The Butcher of Galatep) in order to force the Cardassian Government to publicly acknowledge their war crimes against the Bajorans in an effort to atone for the role he played in the Occupation. After seeing just how remorseful this man really was, Kira begins to realize that each individual (whether they be Cardassian or Bajoran) needs to be judged based on their own actions rather than condemned for simply being a part of a larger group of people with a less-than-perfect history. This is made all the more apparent when, after being released from confinement, the Cardassian is killed in cold blood by a Bajoran man who has strong negative feelings toward the Cardassian race for their occupied of his planet over the past 50 years. The final lines in the episode after the Cardassian dies goes as follows: Major Kira: "Why did you do that? he wasn't Gaul Darheal!" Bajoran Man: "He was Cardassian--that's reason enough." Major Kira: NO--no it's not." While I admire Gene Rodenberry's efforts to promote a future where everyone lives in peace, and everyone is afforded the opportunity to pursue what makes them happy and fulfilled, the fact is that such a future takes time to achieve, and it has to come after we, as humans, have gone through some very necessary, and often times arduous, learning experiences. The producers of DS9 understood this fact very well, and they managed to make the whole Star Trek Franchise feel more relatable with an entry in the canon that was both nuanced and poignant in its approach to showing us just how complicated and messy life really is within the broader universe.

Having watched the series about 4 times. Fine with not watching it again for a long time, if ever. Me: Pulls up 10 things about DS9 video. It will be okay. Me: Resists urge to start watching the series again Me: Looks at what's new on Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon, etc. Me: Starts to itch DS9: "Lower your defenses. Resistance is futile"

O'Brien got tortured to Hell and beyond on DS9, but yeah, his character did grow.

DS9 is to date my Favorite Trek, the only problem I had was how Morn monopolized every scene he was in. Did they have to give him so many lines?

I do welcome the serialized stories, but too many shows that started with a winning formulaic structure decide they need to go all out on the serials and thus kill the magic they had grown (see: Castle). There's a balance in there, and I feel that DS9 was pretty close to the perfect blend.

Yes as you touched upon... utilizing a static Space Station (Instead of a Star ship) to me, gave the show a "Wild West" feel. As each week it was "Look who just rode into town!" A Friend or Foe? A tried and true format that has worked on TV (and movies) since the 1960's.

Kai Winn was played by Louise Fletcher who is most famous for winning the Academy Award as lead actress in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest opposite Jack Nicholson. If you think you hated Kai Winn wait until you meet Nurse Ratched. The film also includes a couple of very young actors named Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd. One of three films to win the "Big Five" Oscars of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture.

After TOS this is by far my most favorite. So many great episodes.

While DS9 is the best star Trek series in my opinion, it did have to keep up with an even better series called Babylon 5 which kept DS9 on its toes.

The Federation was a Paradise as stated in an episode I forget was called. DS9 was out there , and yes the non Paradise created some of the best Startrek.

I guess you could say one of my favorite changes to the formula is a subset of the "Serialized Storylines"... and that is the scope of character backstories. In the monster-of-the-week format, aspects of a character's past might play a part in the immediate story, then almost never heard of again. In DS9's formula there's a certain level of object permanence, the character backstory implicitly defines the story and everything after - like Julian being genetically engineered

I am so glad I finally gave this show a chance years ago. It's honestly the best Trek but I love Expance and Galactica so I can see why I think it's the best.

As always when Something beloved gets Changed, you risk to annihalate your fanbase. I was a Star Trek Fan who *DESPISED* DS9 at First in the 90's when it came Out... Only YEARS later, i learned to View it from another angle and Loved almost EVERY second watching it!

DS9 delivered on true consequences to galactic conflict. Those stark detractions form Rodenberry's vision give this series gravitas. It resonates with it's fans because it has dimension.

Far Beyond The Stars is fantastic. Easily the best written Star Trek episode.

I appreciated showing women in different roles and different positions as well. It was nice to see women seen as "royal smart person", former guerrilla fighter, wise and beloved spiritual leader and dedicated teacher.

Take me out to the Holosuite was basically The Bad News Bears meets DS9.

I really loved how DS9 was basically one long story. All characters were done justice, Quark and Odo were legendary, and DS9 just felt so homely after a while.

It has never made sense to me that _Vulcans_ should get into _baseball._ Baseball is something you get into for _fun_ which is a sensation contrary to the Vulcan _experience._ Even when done _competitively,_ the two teams have to have comparable skills so there's uncertainty about who's going to win. Without that uncertainty, there's no point in _playing._

Gul Dukat is the single greatest villain in the entire Star Trek franchise.

I think one of my favorite lines of DS9 was when Garak had joined Bashir in the holosuite for a little "James Bond" style fun. "I think I joined the wrong intelligence service."

The fact that Rodenberry thought that Starfleet wasn't a military organization was ludicrous. Being explorers sounds nice and cute but there were factions who wanted to destroy or take over the Federation or Starfleet.

I really liked the baseball game episode against the Vulcans,it was sooo GOOD!!! Picard would never do that with his crew!! LOL.NEVER.WHY,he didn't play poker with his crew until the last season on the final episode!! HUH???You can bond more with people under your command more through sports and other social activities-ESPRIT-DE-CORPS!!! This was used often while I was in the military. SEMPER-FI.

lieutenant Worf was not promoted to Lt Cmdr until Generations. Also not stationary, they moved it from Bajor 11 or Bajor as we know it to its position outside the wormhole when they discovered the celestial temple.

I always thought that that is why they tried (the antagonistic characters) with Chains Of Command in TNG. I think they had tried that with Pulaski in the second season, but she was more stupid than antagonistic. For example her interactions with Data, to me were so over the top ignorant, that it was almost comical, bordering on parody. Jellico came in and as Riker pointed out he had a leadership style of an over the top, micro manage every little detail, instead of allowing his crew to do their best. But I think the original series had conflict within the crew however it was dealt with a little more covertly.

Want Dukat, always a murderous madman? I think the difference between earlier and final is that in the beginning he suffered from self-delusion about what he was, and then later embraced it as a truth... The whole turning Bajor into a graveyard-thing

I have to admit when thinking about it DS9 is probably my favorite in the series. It offered everything the other series did, but also a lot of fun episodes and storylines.
