My uncle, next to me in the theater in 1996, the moment Lt. Hawk appeared: "That guys gonna die." He later explained when you see a "new" character going on a dangerous mission, that's a guarantee they'll die. He's a big reason I love Trek.

Anytime they introduce a character you’ve never seen before but everyone on the show knows them like they’ve been a main character the whole series.

Deep Space 9, the episode where Chief O'Brian and Garak go to an abandoned Cardassian space station for parts. 4 crew members never seen before are chatting like Regulars, talking about collecting souvenirs and everything. Dead, dead, dead, and dead!

13:54 she gets dissolved- and then seconds later they use the transporter to beam Spock about. I guess the torpedo could have been interfering with teleportation, but dang- put her in a spacesuit, let her get out any othe rway. HECK, send in one of those fancy repair bots to pull the lever!

How about Haskell in *Where Silence Has Lease* ? Previously unseen crew member suddenly turns up in Wesley's chair - might as well have a big bullseye printed on his costume.
