One of the main reasons for visiting Peru was to trek the Salkantay Pass. The company we chose was Salkantay Trekking (www.salkantayt...) for several reasons. One they had a 4Day 3Night option, all of our food was included, they supplied us with sleeping bags (which was a bonus because we were not traveling with sleeping bags), and last but not least, the SKY CAMP! And to be honest, I feel like we chose an awesome company to with. No only was the trek planned out flawlessly, we never went hungry and our accommodations far exceeded our expectations. And the icing on the cake, our amazing guide Fredy! Fredy is a local and he lives, breathes, and eats the Salkantay! He absolutely loves what he does and that was 100% obvious!
Coming from the North, and a state that is mainly at sea level, the altitude definitely messed with me while hiking. This trek is not for the faint at heart. But as someone who works out regularly and sees myself as fit, this was definitely a challenge. I pushed myself more than I have ever done before. There were moments where I thought I couldn't make. I couldn't breath. With every step I took, it felt as if it took all the energy I had. In fact, once I hit the trail of the 7 snakes, I felt like giving up. Physically, I was exhausted. Mentally, I felt defeated. I began to cry. But thankfully, my guide Fredy gave me the pep talk of all pep talks and by the grace of God I made it to the summit. The second I reached the summit, I fell to my knees and immediately began crying. That was the moment of pure defeat and happiness all rolled into one. I have never in my life felt more proud of myself.
Overall, this was something that was life changing. I have had a difficult year. Most of which isn't shown on social media and I felt as if this was my breaking point to a much better year. I am so glad I accepted and defeated this challenge!
I hope you enjoyed my struggles through this trek. And if this is something that you are thinking of doing, I say go for it! You only live once and this will be challenge that you will be so proud of to accomplish. Make sure you LIKE THIS VIDEO 👍🏼 and HIT SUBSCRIBE because you won't want to miss our LAST and FINAL adventure through Peru. Our grand finale is in Machu Picchu!

I'm sure most people who are heading to the Cusco region plan on trekking to Machu Picchu. I mean that was my plan. Little did I know how difficult it would be. But in the end it was so worth it. Any one else trek to Machu Picchu? Are you planning on trekking the Salkantay? Let me know all your thoughts and feelings!

Great video! I am doing this trek with my husband in April, we are 55 years old!!! Very fit, work out every day, and training by climbing Loon mountain in Lincoln NH, so far 4 times this winter😊 however its the altitude that is worrying me, Loon mountain is only 3050 ft and I live on Cape Cod which is on the ocean! I really hope that I will be able to make it like you! Congratulations!! I’ll keep you posted😊

M HoI Sounds like you are preparing as well as you can! Honestly I work out quite a bit but live at sea level so honestly the altitude is what got me. It really plays some nasty games with your body. But once you hit the summit it’s all down hill from there! After you trek, let me know how well you guys did!

Thanks for making this video! I enjoyed your journey. I'm planning a trip come August, and I'm SO nervous lol. I workout 4 times a week but I can already see myself being the last one, but I think I'm ok with that. I'm mostly scared of the possible nausea x.x ..... Thank you for such an informative video!! Did you spend some time acclimating to the altitude in Cusco and/or take any altitude sickness medication beforehand? Also worried about the altitude adjustment for my upcoming trek 🥲
@TheWanderfulLifeofKayla
@TheWanderfulLifeofKayla 2 жыл бұрын
We spent 2 full days before our trek but spent almost a month in Peru slowly working our way to Cusco in different levels of altitude so we didn’t have a problem with acclimating. I did not have take any medication. I would recommend drinking plenty of water. As for the trek, you are gaining a lot of elevation in a short period of time. It’s mostly up hill. I struggled. A lot. I didn’t hide it but I’m also coming for sea level so it was difficult for me.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm so scared about the altitude on this trek. How many days did you acclimatize in Cusco? Would you have done anything different in retrospect to make the altitude easier?
@TheWanderfulLifeofKayla
@TheWanderfulLifeofKayla 2 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! I did the stairs at the gym for months prior to the trek. We spent 2-3 days in Cusco prior to the trek and we didn’t really have a problem with the altitude until we started hiking. The trek covers a lot of elevation gain in a small time period. And someone who loves at sea level, hiking at that altitude was really difficult for me.

Great to actually see the trails and the campsite. Am also looking at this company so this video gave a lot of perspective of what to expect and the lodgings. Did you always get private lodging (2 people in one dome/hut) or did you have to share with more people? How was the inside of the hut - is there also a bed & mattress?
@TheWanderfulLifeofKayla

Dianshan Ee I am so glad you like this vlog! The lodging was always two people (private) which was really nice and we didn’t have to share with anyone else. We had an odd group of people and someone was traveling alone and he got his own private dome/hut. I did a full review on Salkantay trekking as well as what to pack if you are interested!

I did “train” at the gym. I did the stair stepper every day for a couple months. I live at sea level so I knew the altitude would be a problem. And the higher I got the harder it was to breath.

@@maracalomino4239 if you can I would get out there on the trails and do a hike 2-3 days in a row that gain a significant elevation Bc that’s what’s going to mimic the trek best.
