Lady Bay Bridge was also used masquerading as a Berlin border crossing in the TV series Smiley's People.

I don't know if anyone else has picked it up but the bridge at 6.29 is over Radcliffe Road, not Melton Road. The cranes in the background were building Notts County Council offices in the corner of Trent Bridge cricket ground in the mid-1960s. The shop to the right of the bridge was Ebrey & Brown's where I had my first job - as a paper boy.

God I've never seen a old railway bridge converted into a road, gutted but happy it exists still. Another absolute quality production by the way. Many thanks

I grew up in West Bridgford and I remember lady bay bridge being converted to a road bridge I also went to Rushcliffe school and remember the train track area being filled in to make a new car park. The test track he ended at used to be accessible as well because myself and a mate walked there when I was about 12-13 years old..

Thanks for sharing. I haven't lived in Nottingham for many years, so it was great to get a glimpse of the old Locksley School in Devonshire Road. I went there in the 60s'. Dad used to own Mansell's Licenced Grocers (opposite the TBI) before the onslaught of the big supermarkets took over. We used to play on the Edwalton station. Fond memories.

I've watched a few of your videos and enjoyed them all particularly those on the GCR but this was very close to my heart as I lived only a few yards from this stretch of railway off Selby Road. I played 'down the embankment' as a child, the brickworks was still there back then but the tracks lifted I think (1970 onwards) but essentially much of the infrastructure along the line through the cutting and all the way up to Edwalton was very much intact including telegraph poles and even some of the wires still present. I wish I'd kept some of the insulators that I remember scattered over the ground! Edwalton Station was as it was in one of your photographs, track lifted and a bit forlorn but the platforms and buildings were still there and it was possible to explore inside them as most of the boarding had been pulled off (not guilty!) Sometime after I left home my mum moved into one of the houses on Selby Road backing onto the embankment just above the Devonshire Road bridge. It's brilliant that the bridge at Devonshire Road was preserved and the route converted into such a pleasant walk which is well used by local residents. Whilst mum was alive I used to visit often and always walked my dog along the path reminiscing about the happy times I spent down there in my childhood! Thank's so much for posting the video and the others too, fascinating as I love railways and local history but even more so with my strong local connections to this location.

Truly fascinating for me as I lived in Melton for 23 years. I remember being sat in the station waiting for a train to Leicester when the APT pulled in to the other platform!! There are some very good vids of the journey from the buffers at the golf course along the Old Dalby test track, ending not far short of Melton.

Very interesting to stumble upon this video. I remember travelling from St Pancras to Nottingham by this route in the 1960s. My late father worked at the Nicholson & Myall garage in Melton Road near the first bridge from 1932-39 and the 1960s trips were made to visit his mother, who still lived in Exchange Road, West Bridgford. While there on one occasion I walked along the A606 to the second bridge. Thank you for bringing back these memories. I did not realise that so much of the old trackbed is now a footpath.

These were the Railway equivalent of their era of the motorways we have today, smooth, swift performers compared to the rough pot holed roads of the 19th century horse drawn era. So many routes built with good intention in mind, but sadly never really could pay their way, with eventual closure the result. Dr Beeching sealing the lid on so many of these in the mid 1960's. You can't but stop to admire some of the colossal efforts made to construct these railway lines. Great exploration, thanks for sharing.🙂👍

I lived in West Bridgford in the late 60s & early 70s and can remember the test track. At that time it actually finished on the West Bridgford side of the Boundary Road bridge near to the brickworks. I can remember going up there when in the Scouts and beyond the buffer stop there was a long section filled with hardened foam or polystyrene presumably as a safety measure.

I recall that foam barrier as well - I do believe it was placed for crash testing - having lived in Edwalton from 1968 to 1974.

Being a Nottingham lad and being old enough to remember the steam trains your videos are really good. I really like the idea that you are saving what few memories we have of those by gone days and making them available. The drone also really adds a great touch giving an aerial view of some places that have long gone., with the addition of the black and white stills the picture becomes complete. Please keep them coming ..... if you are looking for material (I vaguely remember small hints of a railway that crossed Coventry road Bulwell near to Sellars Wood road when I was a boy in 60's) I just thought you being a forensic railway hunter, you might have been able to shed some light on it, it was long gone even back then.

There was a story today on the Nottingham Post website about a council plan to open up a railway arch near to the A52 to make a footpath for the people in the houses behind the test track embankment. This will join on to the golfcourse footpath and save the residents from having to walk along a busy fast road to get to Edwalton. Good idea!

I live just near the test track a bit further down from Edwalton and did that same walk last year. Not sure if you've done it, but there's old line in Bingham you could walk. The first part is the "linear park", but it goes on quite a way through the countryside after that. If you've already done it, be interested to check it out. Have really enjoyed watching the videos you've done in the East Midlands area, great work

Great footage of this lesser known route out of Nottingham, its such a shame short sighted politicians had all this either converted, as in Ladybay Bridge or ripped up all together as the population has risen considerably over the intervening years. Very interesting walk all the same, the old pictures you referred back to look fantastic. The occasional rail tour goes on to the Old Dalby test track from time to time.

Interesting video as always, Ant. I have driven over the Lady Bay bridge. I used to do coach tours to Nottingham regularly. I remember the last time I was there, a section of the old viaduct was being demolished, a lovely Grey brick structure. Part of it seems to be used by the teams though.

I can also remember travelling along Melton Rd at Edwalton in the 80's & being able to see the buffer stop with what looked like about 100yds of white polystyrene positioned between the rails & over time this degenerated to create an unsightly mess in the vicinity, but that must of been cleaned up for some time ago. I guess that when they were testing the A.P.T.E & that they couldn't of trusted the brakes on it & the polystrene was there for a precautionary measure for just in case !

I'm originally a Nottingham lad and my grandparents lived on Stratford road (the removed embankment stretch between Bridgford Road and Melton Road). I remember the steam trains and a couple of embankment fires, also that metal bridge over Bridgford Road. A huge blue brick bridge (with tunnel for the footpath) has been removed from that stretch. The first time I went to London in about 1967 we went from Midland Station to St Pancras on this line.

Another excellent walk - fascinating. I never knew this railway track/walk from Melton Road even existed. Now, when I'm back in Nottm I want to go and find it. I don't know West Bridgford well, but my dad and mum had a pet shop on Melton Road right opposite the entrance to the Green Line (!) for many years, so it's also a bit nostalgic for me. Thanks, Ant!

Great video...thoroughly enjoyed it...just a comment about Rushcliffe School in that it definitely opened before the line was closed. My mum used to take me up to Boundary Road in the early 60s to watch the trains and I remember wanting to go to the flash new school alongside the track. We moved away from Bridgford shortly afterwards but I was fortunate enough to complete my 6th form there later when my family moved back to the area.

@@paulwilson3083 They could be, never thought of that. It does look like a full passenger rake behind them though. Were weedkiller tanks passed as "express" to run at speed? It's such a shame that so many wonderful old photos have lost any captions/notes they have had. I always think that's one of the great benefits of today's online archives; a great deal of the old photos, now available online, have details of the subject included.👍👌😁

Nice one Ant another great video, you’ve done the Gedling to colwick line and now the lone from lady bay bridge what about the bit from colwick to Nottingham station as there’s still some remnants on the colwick loop road ie platform near race coarse and more from race coarse island behind the virgin building and Smyths toys which are accessible.. another idea is the old Wilford line which is next to the new tram line there used to be an old bridge about 200 yards from the tram bridge that crossed the river there and if you look on the steps you can see where it was. Like I said I love watching your explores and can’t wait for the next one 👏👍

When I was a child, I remember going to Nottingham on a Bartons bus from Melton because the line had just closed, Years later, I remember that there was an emergency line , filled with polystyrene, that went under Melton Road, in case the APTE couldn't stop in time. After that, the line was given over to housing. Such a waste. A direct Nottingham, Melton, Corby, Kettering diversion line ruined by corrupt politicians as usual.
