On the performance of the Ares-class, versus the Constitution-class: As the Ares is described as a "pure warship," it may be that it was built *only* for war, and not for exploration. (Maybe this is why we don't see it in the JJ films, or on TOS.) No science labs, arboretums, rec rooms, or guest quarters. But the Constitution was built to do BOTH jobs, and while it boasted modest gains in speed, power, etc., its other advances were in its extra facilities, the sophistication of its computer systems, and its onboard living conditions. So its battlefield performance and warp speed may not be too far ahead of its predecessor.
@jfridy8 жыл бұрын
+Nick Hentschel Also a pure warship probably doesn't have the long range needed for solo exploration work.
@TheSaneHatter8 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Fridy Indeed, probably not: wartime deployment is at odds with long-term, unassisted voyaging through the universe. So the Ares-class ships may not have been built for the latter.
@onlycorndog63226 жыл бұрын
I think the main advantages the Constitution would have over the Ares would have been a bigger crew and the ability to operate for longer periods of time without the need for a Starbase. I agree that their firepower would have probably been comperable in that the Ares would have had MORE phasers but the Connie's phasers would have been more powerful individually. I think of the Connie as a more independent version of the Ares.

Operation Leaf Blower: The US invasion of Canada. But as far as upgrading a ship in war to be minor, IJN's Ise was modified by removing her after turrets, adding ballast, a rudimentary hanger and flight deck during the war. USS Colorado, USS Maryland, USS West Virginia, USS New Mexico and others were heavily modified during the war as well.

War Plan Red is what I think you're thinking of. And as far as the question of naval upgrades, I think the Japanese conversion of the Ise-class battleships into hybrid carriers might actually count as a downgrade.

Your best bet to typify Tellarite technology is to make it metallurgy and alloy related. I think they are subsurface dwellers on their home planet and their economy is primarily mining related. Consider them for manufacturing methods, metallurgy, ship structural systems. Andorians, energy management, phasers, power distribution systems from the warp core to other systems. The Andorian tech makes sense when we consider they come from an ice planet, so heating and artificial energy systems would have developed more with them than other races.
@8digitPDX9 жыл бұрын
Tellarites for structural systems and manufacturing methods as mentioned, Andorians for energy production, management and projection (advanced phasers). With Vulcans, you think of them as high level quantum theorists. They handle the tweaks on other races technology. The Vulcan version of everything else will always be more tweaked and advanced. With Humans, it is the integration of the systems, since human development involved parallel development of multiple nations and language groups, humans are more suited to coordinating and combining technologies of other races than those races which had developed for a longer period of time under a common language, philosophy and world government. That is why humans tend to be more involved with Star Fleet administration and leadership than those races which developed with less comprehension of coordinating those with more diverse culture. Makes sense to me anyway, so we could write that in to Star Fleet canon somehow.
@paulc53339 жыл бұрын
8digitPDX I would say the humans were more adept at tweaking and adapting the technology of other races because of our ability to think outside of the box. The Vulcans are the theorists it's true and do have the more advanced tech in some things because they have been doing it longer than some other races and their generally pacifist position allows them to focus on non weapon technologies. One ? no one has asked is what tech the zindy {sp?} race[s] would contribute?
@paulc53339 жыл бұрын
Paul C to answer myself perhaps the zindy would contribute their future sourced gravitic mine technology?

I would LOVE to ask two questions to Alec Peters and also have him do an AMA on /r/startrek subreddit! First question will be how deep will Axanar get into how the core Federation member worlds helped in the design and how their respective fleets (Andorian Imperial Guard etc.) were integrated into Starfleet? I would LOOOOVE to see them helping out and finally accepting the overpoweredness of UNITY that the Federation experiment brings and any scenes towards them helping out different races in battles would be beyond awesome. What moves me so much and makes me fall in love with Trek is the fact that species SO DIFFERENT in nature and culture put aside all differences and help each other out completely (not just an alliance of convenience). Always brings a tear to my eye. And I already forgot my second question..

I would add that for a pure warship, Ares class should at least have a crew of 200 or more. around 50 security and 90 damage control teams split to three shifts of 30. and 60 for ship operation also needs to be split in to three shifts. For warships in history up until now, they always have more crews than science or cargo vessels. Damage control teams normally takes a sizable part of the crew.

In my headcanon as soon as the war started Admiral slater ordered the development of a new generation of starships. Ares, Constitution, Miranda, maybe more. As soon as Rameriez took over he said there no point having all these ships if the war is over before they’re ready. He pulled all resources from other projects and directed them to mass producing Ares, gambling they could turn the tide. It paid off for Starfleet but the downside was work on the Constitution was severely delayed and other designs too.

Anyone who says starships would not fight up close and personal has utterly failed to think it through. There could be no long-range combat in Trek. The technology makes it impossible. "Sir, they are firing at us from 25km!" "Go to warp 2" End of fight. Unless you can hide both your ship and your weapon, or make your weapon appear on target (within shielding, no less) instantly, all your target has to do is unass the area via Warp. As such, all combat will be of the "knife-fight-in-a-phonebooth" variety (relatively speaking). As far as misses are concerned, you can bet torpedoes are being jammed and decoyed like mad, while any kind of beam weapon is always going to be entirely subject to the initial aim. Many people fail to realize space combat at high sublight velocities would come with an entirely new set of tactics and problem like none we've seen before. Fighting at warp speeds would be pretty iffy, and way too close for comfort, no matter the technology.
@BucksheeRounds9 жыл бұрын
FMChimera Having ships fight within sight of each other is also just so much cooler. :)
@FMChimera9 жыл бұрын
BucksheeRounds Well yeah! But, seriously, it's legitimately the only way to do it. I certainly wouldn't engage a foe at distance when I can essentially just blip out of one place and blip back in elsewhere damn near instantly.
@paulc53339 жыл бұрын
FMChimera remember "close aboard" fighting in space would be within say 10km of each other much as it is with surface navies today not like the trading of broadsides at 50m as they did in the 1812 war for example.
@BillMcHale9 жыл бұрын
FMChimera The obvious limitation here is the ability of enemy to see the weapon fire before it hits them. I can see that being true of photon torpedoes which are essentially rockets. In contrast, I tend to believe that phasers are essentially as fast as lasers; you can't see them until they hit you. Its also possible that a ship might be vulnerable for a moment or two when entering warp making warping out to avoid fire a very dangerous proposition. In the few cases where ranges were mentioned in TOS, I believe they were often stated as tens of thousands of kilometers.
@KeironCharles9 жыл бұрын
Bill McHale Star ships have subspace sensors which overcome these limitations (Captain, two ships approaching at high warp...weapons range in two minutes) so they know when an enemy is aggressive (Captain, they have charged phasers and armed photon torpedoes) and they know when weapons fire is coming (Captain, they've fired torpedoes - Evasive action helm, do I have to think of everything? Show some initiative! We're hit, everyone lean to the left...no my left....)
@Jager19673 жыл бұрын
Well it seems to my opinion that the Ares class was started off as a side project originally...Let's say a group of young up and coming ship designers working at the San Francisco Shipyard, some whom are civilians other are Starfleet reservists for argument sake. These persons have friends/colleagues, family members or spouses that are active duty Starfleet or working for the U.F.P. directly, 'managed' to get read in on or a hold of a strategic intelligence analysis and forecast for the next decade based on current diplomatic/politics, trade/commerce and military capabilities of the know major and regional powers in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, and the outlook wasn't good. So this band of engineers got together and said "What can we do?" So they started to bounce ideas of possible tactical refits to existing designs at first during lunch breaks and weekends, but eventually came to the conclusion if Starfleet starts taking loses in ships and crews, what's going to replace them? The Ares class began as unofficial thought exercise initially to build a light to mid-size cruiser class vessel that was completely combat oriented, using as many currently available/proven off the shelf components and subsystems as possible to address the logistical challenges of war time shipbuilding, accelerate development from concept to final approved design and construction in as little time as possible. The Ares was kept on the back-burner as it were, take down off the shelf, plans brushed off and updated with latest emerging technologies every couple of months, ready and waiting in the wings should the need arise.
@xheralt2 жыл бұрын
Starfleet had other wars, including the Romulan War, that could have kickstarted early Ares designs, that were dropped/mothballed when the conflict ended, then pulled back out for the Axanar conflict.

I think the Ares-theory makes a lot of sense. Starfleet wasn't founded as a military organization but they weren't naive, it's very likely they commissioned a design team, supplied with the latest Intel on the combat technology available to multiple potential enemy fleets, and tasked them with designing a series of warship concepts that would lay the groundwork for future doomsday scenarios. Remember this is taking place a few years after the war with the Romulans so by the time the Klingons attacked Starfleet ships were probably already better armed than previous generations had ever been so the fact that they took such a hard beating for so long probably came as a nasty surprise to the Federation which is why they couldn't just start rolling out Ares-class ships right away - they needed to go back to the drawing board and update their design concepts to cope with the weapons and tactical systems of the D7's that were kicking their asses.

Regarding pulse phasers: While the damage output per second might be lower, I see the main advantage in better heat management (less likely to overheat during prolonged use), which would be very important for a vessel supposed to fight in larger scale battles. Maybe even the ability to work under low power conditions?

my explanation of pulsed phasers, would be a lower power drain and superior cool down rate would allow for a more continuous rate of fire at the cost of having a lower per hit damage output. which could be believed to be a bonus in battle. like having machine guns and cannons on a fighter jet.

According to Memory Beta, Tellarites love to argue, and seek differing opinions to their own for their own sake. So maybe they can anticipate the Klingon mind set and lead their commanders into traps? profile is important when youre trying to optically target the enemy but considering how in this case, they would be trying to target the enemy using comuperterized targeting systems so whats important would be the enemies electronic signature, sensors would not establish a lock at the the distances were taking into consideration with the opponents physical characteristic but would target an enemy's engine 'bloom'. At close range, the ship's cross section would be relevant but at the ranges contacts would be made in the Star Trek universe that quality would be inconsequential

Have we ruled out private enterprise (no pun intended). Star Fleet puts out specs and a request for proposals from Boeing, Airbus, etc. I understand not wanting to name specific corporations, but I do think it reasonable that private corporations could already be working on designs that they'd pitch to the government. There have been many references to World War II, and that's how it worked back then.

There is one thing I both love and dont like about the federation ships; the saucer and secondary hull setup. Most of the ships have the heavy weapons in the secondary hull, meaning that they are (at least from what I can work out from blind suposition) useless against any enemy attacking from any other plane/angle than the one the federation ship has/is on. And in a 3 dimentional space like, well, space, it is kinda silly to build a ship in a way that blocks its own weapons from firing. Again, this is just what I think, with zero research. If anyone knows how this is solved, please tell me

It's one fly in the ointment for star trek that bugged me, 'going where no one has gone before' poorly armed? That and sending key officers and even its Captain, on a away mission. If anyone of them died on a mission, that would leave a large capability gap in how that ship functions. This design would be comparing other starfleets ships being like a modern navy multi role supply ship or MRV, that often can carry scientific reserchers and do humanitarian, disaster relief, lightly armed,the Ares to be compared to a Arliegh Burke class destroyer, built for war.

I don't think that the Ares Class was originally designed as a warship. It was probably originally designed as a general purpose vessel, and it was most likely nearly completed along with other ships of the line being under construction before being repurposed as a warship.

So the Ares was like the Defiant class of it's day?

I consider Ares Class a fast production War Cruiser, comparable to the NCL from Starfleet Battles

Engineers like to change everything to miss quote Bones! Specially is you have engineers of a dozen planets working together ? Ouch!! In Shipyard!! Double Ouch!! Many changes are done in the spot in new ships and sometimes are unique for type of ships or upgrades due to mistake as well.

In fact in the 1970's there were plans to invade Canada, Britain and Europe but they were more like strategy evaluations. There was also a report called Oilfields as Military Objectives.... There will always be strategic 'what if' planning because you never know how even the most democratically stable countries will be in the years ahead...

Does anyone notice the Aries impulse engine looks like the ones on the new Discovery Enterprise.

If the Ares is the prototype, theregistry number should start with NX, not NCC.
