As someone who lives on acreage with horses and an assortment of animals, they are a huge commitment of time and money. Make sure your mom can keep up with this once you are gone. Love our animals and would not change a thing about our life with them, just be aware of the time, money, work, and sometimes heartache involved.

I cannot agree more. I understand the desires, but it must be done responsibly & they need to study the animals they get BEFORE getting them.

Ahhhhgg! I"ve raised chickens before and you seem to be heading for the same mistake I made. Foxes! Rats! Raccoons! Right behind you here is daylight showing through the bottom of the door. Any of these animals can just walk in though holes much smaller than that and have a chick dinner. It happened to me and our holes were much, much smaller. Please seal the barn up better to same their lives. Something took our chickens (much bigger than chicks) and we not only didn't find the bodies, we had a hard time even finding the holes they came through. If predator proofing the barn isn't practical, (and it might not be) consider building a smaller, easier to seal coop inside the barn. Best of luck. I'm rooting for you and for the chickens.

Actually chickens are easy, but yes, you have to protect them, even from hawks! I dont know what kind of chickens that they got, but they can be very sweet and friendly. It depends upon the breed. But they should get geese! They are like watch dogs! Roosters can be pretty mean, but can't always protect the hens from something like foxes! And, no, you cannot reliably sex a chick by the color! If you are practiced, chicks can be sexed only at one day old!

I just commented the same thing about "critter proofing" the shed better before reading through the comments. Agree with you as we've lost chickens to critters that got through even smaller gaps than what I saw on the video like under the door and such. It's always a sad day to wake up to these kind of things.

I have enjoyed watching the two of you for quite some time now. For the past several years I have been trying to decide whether I wanted to buy a tiny house or start van life when I finally retire. You were one of the first couples I started following. I was really delighted when you went home to your mother, to keep safe and help out your mom. I must say, I am loving seeing "Country Trent"! I feel like I am seeing you in your natural environment. And Allie, you are absolutely adorable as always! I would love to see some baby goats, because they are always fun to watch, and at least one cow, which would help your mom out with milk and butter. Can't wait to see what you come up with next! Say hi to your mom for me, and tell her I said thank you for the wonderful work she does in caring for others and I will keep her in my prayers, that she will stay healthy during this trying time. God bless you all and stay safe!

I would hold off on getting other animals until you get everything in place for the chickens. You need to build them a roost as they’ll grow pretty quickly. Whatever animals you get will not only need to be fed and maintained but there will be veterinary expenses too. If you need to haul to the vet your mom will probably need a trailer unless she has access to one from a neighbor. Animals are a lot of work.

Yeah, baby chicks can even drown in the waterer so they recommend putting rocks or marbles in the waterer. Definitely, will need to secure that barn to keep out predators. Everything wants to eat them. Snakes, rats, raccoons, cats, dogs, opossums, etc...You can find lots of how to videos on how to make chicken coops predator proof. We use 1/2 inch hardware cloth and also made a 2 foot skirt around ours to keep animals from digging underneath it. Carolina Coops sell beautiful and expensive coops but they have great videos on KZfaq that you can gleam ideas from. Horse manuer is gold for gardens and flower beds!

@@Jimnohl1966 I'm a born n' raised farm girl, and until about 10 yrs. ago, never heard of the dangers of mouse droppings either. But they can be dangerous. www.pests.org/mice-droppings-identification-risks-dangers/ The Hidden Dangers of Mouse Droppings. More than 30 different types of disease are associated with mice and their droppings. They include the Rickettsia virus, which can create a condition similar to chicken pox. Hantavirus is another. Eosinophilic Meningitis is another concern. The droppings of mice can cause Leptospirosis or Salmonellosis. A quick 'Duck' of the subject will tell you a lot.

A good friend raises goats, and they're so much fun to be around! They also have a few cows, and people board horses on her ranch. She's about to get her bees next month, I'll be getting mine in a couple of years. (If I'd known this pandemic was going to have me working from home and the school behind me wouldn't have students, I would have started my hives this year. You don't need bees, but I consume a LOT of honey with my health issues, so it makes sense for me to do ti.

I think it is so cool that you are learning some new hands on life skills. I think a lot of people will start little home farms. Old doors are very useful. If you get goats or sheep, they're good for the yard. Horse crap is great for composting. The pile is great for garden. If you get shhep or goats, include a donkey. Best guard for a pastured herd going.

We got chickens in the mail as children for our farm. It was awesome because you'd pick out the sub species you wanted from a catalogue and then like a week later the postmaster would call and we'd drive to town for pic up. As I recall survival rates were somewhere around 70%. Speckled Sussex, Rode Island reds and bantam fighting chickens turned out to be the most hearty. The bantams lay half sized eggs that are really tasty

The chicks need the solid protection of chicken wire over under and around them...if a weasel, fox, coyote, raccoon, etc, dig or squeeze their way into the old gapped barn, its goodbye chickies & lots of tears. Act quickly, quick like a fox!
@TerminalThiccness
@TerminalThiccness 4 жыл бұрын
We've had quite a struggle with predators and our chickens. Donita is right, if there are gaps in the building, wrap the building in wire mesh (not chicken wire the holes are too wide and some animals can pull that wider with their teeth (or little hands in case of raccoons). If you run the wire mesh with extra at the bottom you can dig out a bit around the building and bury it. The deer netting stuff is great for the top of an open enclosure. And give them things to hide under/behind. Boards/logs, pallets, anything they can duck under/into/behind if a hawk comes around. Their natural instincts will kick in and they will hide.

So that you can reuse the N95 or N99 masks while you work round the property and still have them when you have to go to the grocery store it’s suggested that you wear a bandanna or a fabric mask you can make at home. There are many different patterns for them online and on Pinterest. Adding fusible interfacing adds to its ability to filter out particles from the air.

I felt very good about them doing that. Life death and food production. It's an art, and very worthwhile. Lots of gardening. Orchard, cattle and goats, ducks and chickens, cats and dogs.
