We all love Trevor in South Africa. I am white British married to black Zimbabwean. We have 3 children and 10 grandchildren. Our son is fluent in 5 languages and can understand maybe 3 others. To be mxed race anywhere in southern Africa is to be called 'Coloured'. And especialy in the Cape where they have been mixed for 300 years, NEVER call a Coloured 'mixed race. By the way, we live in a black township.

Sure, when he was a kid, his simple color meant he couldn't even associate with his father or mother outside. @bluelotus37502 ай бұрын
Trevor Noah, coming out of South Africa Apartheid as a mixed race, has some of the best observations on race. You gotta watch the whole special.😂

We South Africans would have these conservations on Americans logic on race since childhood it's more basic observations
@bluelotus37502 ай бұрын
@@yusufabdoolla5919 As you are a South African, to you, his commentary may not be so novel. I find as a mixed race in America, myself, his observations and thoughts on being mixed race from a country where that is illegal essentially is very interesting. The sense of not belonging to either race fully is not really discussed here, though it is felt. But it is also not really a crime any longer. And our discussions on race are not as black and white (no pun intended), surrounding the mixed part. Also, unless you are also mixed race growing up there, your observations may also have a different perspective than Trevor's, as well. Having a father that he "knew", but really couldn't be around for legal reasons, would have a different impact on him then you just observing him. But I will not presume to know about your upbringing.

I grew up in a time where there was no such thing as "mixed." You were either black or you weren't. And having a black parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent meant that you also were black--no matter how white you looked. There were even laws about how many generations back the black forefather or mother had to be before you'd be considered white. If you denied it, then you were passing. And if you were passing, then you prayed very, very hard that your children looked like the white side of the family tree. I bet that DNA home kits have outed a lot of claimed Italian/Mediterranean heritages as actually something much closer to home.

Well in South Africa it is more multi racial however, amongst the black people in South Africa, they are differentiated by ethnicity as well and they have different languages and culture too.
@Justafox3052 ай бұрын
There are different cultures and languages with black Americans in USA (ex. Beyoncé is Louisiana Creole and viola Davis is Gullah geechee - two different languages and cultures but they are both black American. The black people in South America also have different cultures in Brazil and Colombia.
@ekg8912 ай бұрын
@@Justafox305 sure but it doesn't compare. south Africa has more than 10 black ethnic groups which equates to just as many official languages. I know race definitions in America are different, but in South Africa we wouldn't consider Creole people black. They'd be their own race as they are mixed heritage. And that's great but neither Beyonce nor Viola speak another language besides English
@Sooopa_Doopa2 ай бұрын
@@Justafox305 Well Brazil and Colombia are 2 entirely different countries, with very different histories and different languages. Spanish is semi-intelligble to Portugese speakers but it is much more difficult the other way around. Now a comparable example would be Blacks in Colombia: The Department (read: state) of Choco borders the Pacific Ocean is majority Black. Culturally however they are different that Blacks from the interior states such as in Valle de Cauca, who themselves are different than Blacks in Cartegena. They in turn are culturally different than Blacks from the Caribbean islands of San Andres, Providencia and Sana Catalina. And they in turn are different from Blacks from Palenque de San Basilio (a former maroon community). And they in turn are different from Blacks in the mountainous Andean region outside of Bogotoa. They even have a whole host of names/descriptors for people. But they all have certain cultural similarities and they all fall under the Afrodescendiente (read: Black) umbrella kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLmhaKmmzbmVg3k.htmlsi=bS2C7PGZlAWBCQ5G

Loved Trevor from this first special and in the part that leads up to this he talks about how in South Africa he was never considered to be black, he had to be hidden at times when he was young as his very existence was illegal. When they moved in with his grandmother in one of the settlements they told people he was an albino to cover up the fact he was half Swiss. He got his first sold out show in South African after the regime change, it’s called Daywalker and it’s very funny. He was legitimately thrilled to come to a place where he would actually be considered black. Anthony Anderson helped bring him to the US the first time (before he had Netflix specials).

I’m mixed, Obama style, half and half. I went to the same kind of universities, and have always been what you called “proper”./I never tried for cool in my walk, speech, or dress. What has always been upsetting is being called “less black” for speaking a certain way or not acting in certain ways. I’m not the only mixed or fully black person who isn’t cool. Instead of insulting us and saying we’re not even black, maybe it’s the other way around, maybe the entirety of black people contains all of us: There’s the cool ones, the ones who are up to date with slang, walks,speech patterns; and there are black people who have eclectic interests, academic interests, who use Standard Academic English and don’t have another dialect. This definition could be expanded greatly, but I’m just addressing the parts you addressed in the video. Personally, I would appeal for being considered less black because I have a white parent, but that’s a wildly unpopular opinion, so if I’m black because I have a black parent, then I’m pissed off for being called “less black” for any reason. I want the imaginary“black world” committee to make up its mind. I’m old now, so I realize I won’t resolve this for myself in my lifetime. I just want to get the ideas out there. Thanks for reading.

Well in South Africa, mixed is a whole separate thing….where you’re, according to Afrikaans, “better than being black, but not good enough to be white”. Since Trevor is close with his black side, there was this yearning to fit in with his black side. Here in US, if you’re half black, you’re not considered not black. That’s what he’s referring to.
