Honesty is the best policy! Awesome response!!! He’s a phenomenal teacher! It’s been a long time since I played guitar (chronic hand pain), but watching him play is a blast! It’s great to see someone pick apart how Trey plays! And I’m jealous as all get out that he has a Paul Languedoc guitar!

First, that guitar sounds really, really nice. Second, the chord tone stick with it, not a chord tone bend it, might be the greatest insight ever into Trey's style of playing.

Man I wish I lived on your city, would love to sit down and take a few lessons in person. Honestly, your love for music and the guitar is infectious. I’m sitting here with a big smile on my face during your video. My GF and I love to watch your videos and then work through the concepts. It’s become our “date night.” We especially love the Jerry videos. Brother, keep doing what your doing. From Michigan, much love.

I just talk about that little chord, the “secret sauce” one, as the first inversion triad of the major chord. I try to think about the triads when I’m playing, but this gives me a way of thinking about them that wouldn’t have occurred to me. Great video!

Love it Ian. What a great way to practice major pentatonics and bend the other than chord tones. Which of course makes you learn the chord tones as well. I realize there is another reason I really like this lesson. Ian, I think it is masterful the way you choose a position, and then simply move that position as the chord changes. This makes it simple to keep a particular pattern in your head and very it a little bit for each particular chord. As you get better and better at this, and choose differing patterns, once you get comfortable you can start to mix and match, ultimately keeping your hand in one position. I particularly like moving the patterns, because I believe it creates some nice distinctive melodic lines as the chords pass by.

StichMethod Guitar Thanks! I do that all the time. But I have SUCH a tendency to stay in the E pentatonic form in the tonic key. This helped remind me to move around with the chords of the song. But I’ve never approached soloing in the terms you described it as not bending the chord tones. I’ll definitely implement that approach. Made a ton of sense to me so thanks again!!

Any major chord outside of key is Lydian. B is the 4th of F#. Play F# major scale over B. C# Major over the F# chord. Simpler way to think is F#minor scale over E and D, F# Major scale over B F# Lydian over F#.

Hi, I just saw Peter Frampton in DC last night in his Final Tour due to illness, and was impressed by his lead guitar and blues. Would you consider doing a video on his lead guitar method in something like Do You Feel Like I do, as it is so well known and liked? Would love to see your take on it. His blues album is amazingly number one on Billboard right now in the blues genre.

👍👍Great chord progression! While I agree that introducing the Pentatonics forms by highlighting the Major Triads and exploring the 2 color notes with bends is super helpful for beginners... it should be noted that guitar improvisations do not generally benefit from moving your hand position directly in parallel response to the chord movement. It's fundamentally important to learn each area of the neck and employ the 5 forms, and then only move your hand position for an independent musical purpose...which is definitely how Trey approaches it! When the chord moves up or down, he often moves in the opposite direction (if he changes fret position at all). It's one of the many things that distinguishes him from Jerry.
