I got sent this old Tri-ang Princess Victoria by Paul. This was his first ever loco and he wanted me to get it back into running order.

It was good to meet up with you in Falkirk on Saturday and talk briefly about these old models. My first model was also a Triang Princess, albeit "Princess Elizabeth" and, over the years, I've completed several services similar to the one you've just done. There's something very satisfying about putting it all back together again and seeing an improved performance.

My first railway models were all Triang courtesy of my Aunt who worked for Triang in Margate. Simple and solidly built and last for ever except for some when the alloys and plastic had a few problems!!! Still got my collection 60 years on. Another great video, well done you

You did a great job servicing the Triang Princess Royal Locomotive, despite she doesn't like the points & noisy, she's a superb runner, especially at over 60 years old.

Love these old Triang Princesses, I've got 2 of Princess Elizabeth's and 2 Victorias. So easy to work on, basic simple engineering. Built to last, not like the stuff you buy now.

I have 46201, Princess Elizabeth, AND the two LMS-coloured coaches, out of my 1953 Rovex set. And yet, it still works! The coaches, though, have turned into maroon bananas.... It was bought from Gamages in high Holborn, and came with an oval of grey plastic based track and a HUGE battery box for an Ever-Ready bell battery...happy days, eh?

You're right Bill. If looked after these old girls will run forever. I got mine at a club buy and sell as a non runner and after a service she's back in running order too. I have a Tri-ang Series 3 layout for these old Tri-ang jems. The thing to remember is that old electric motors run best with old controllers. I found that the Morley controller wasn't suited for them. Even the Gauge Master Combo is a bit lacking to be fair. The Tri-ang P5A or P5T or the H&M Duette works better for these old girls I've found. Stay safe and happy modelling. Mon

What a coincidence. I'm about to give a thorough cleaning to a Triang Princess Victoria too! While a wire wheel will have to do for me for cleaning the coupling rods and valve gear, I'm super happy I got a remagnitizer from Mr. Dood two weeks ago to revitalize that motor! All the best to you and can't wait to see more!

Great to see you on Saturday at Falkirk Bill - really enjoyed chatting with you! Like some others in this chat I also had a Princess Victoria as my first engine back in the early 70s and I’m very pleased to say that it still runs incredibly well today! Really enjoying your videos - many thanks!

Nice one Bill, I particularly enjoyed this video because I have an old (1963) Triang Hiawatha, very similar to this. It runs well, but I’m dealing with wobbly/oblong pony truck wheels that I need to replace.

Hi Bill. Usual excellent high standard but you forgot to point out to the viewer the necessity for a compass. Never mind, next time! Paul. 👍❤️

Looked out for you yesterday at Grangemouth but never saw you lol. Maybe Paisley. I just wanted to say thanks for your videos. Gave me information and confidence to have a go at old engines I bought to make a start on a model set up for the winter. Been away from modelling for 50 years. So far I only destroyed 5 engines🙃🙃🙃😂😇. My first diorama is looking as if it might be a scrap yard.😇😇😇😇. I am of course messing. I managed to get 4 out of five running again. The fifth I think the wheels are wrong way round (wee dock engine) or the magnet might be the wrong way round. Not sure hoe that would affect thing though. Anyway. Thanks again. There is a weird fascination/satisfaction watching you work. I have been building up my supplies for maintaining the engines. Only T-cut forgotten I think. Cheers Bill.

Hello Bill. I have 2 of these, one with very, very old wheels. I’ll use your approach and see if I can get them running. Haven’t got a re-magnetiser though. I have an old Jinty that has huge flanges, not unlike those on that tender, which means it will only run on Triang Super 4 track. I could try grinding them down a bit, perhaps?
@oobill
@oobill 8 ай бұрын
I've heard of people grinding down wheel flanges but I don't fancy it much without the proper tools. Re-wheeling is probably a better option if you can find them. If you don't have a remagnetiser I'd advice being nice to someone who does ( I'm happy remag for cost of return postage) or fit a neodymium replacement.

@@oobill Thanks for the advice and offer, Bill. I think I will retire the Jinty to my display cabinet. As for the Princesses, I may well take you up on the offer to re-magnetize. I saw one of the machines you have for sale at a swapmeet recently for £75. Perhaps I should've bought it?

Surprised you didn’t put it in a cradle and polish up the wheels for better contact.

what's goining on with those wheels? I have loads of old princess's and I've yet to see a solid wheel(spokes wise) with that design of wheel weights?
