Greetings again Oscar! Another delightful video! The Tri-ang utility van's last outing was back in 2015, painted as Sir Winston Churchill's funeral van. This combined with the R.356 and a rake of Pullmans would give you a passable period recreation of the Great Statesman's final journey. Seeing this event on television is one of my earliest memories. Keep up the great work!

Another great start to Sunday Oscar. There is a trick to make those smoke units more effective using paired diodes on the feed wire to the motor, (nothing big 1N4001 will do). Wire two diodes in parallel, one facing the opposite way to the other, (this is needed to let the motor run in both directions), between the feed wire to the motor and the pickup wire. This will reduce the voltage to the motor by about 0.7v, whilst the smoke unit gets a direct feed, not through the diodes. The more diode pairs added in series, the more you reduce the voltage across the motor. You can also use Baby Oil instead of expensive smoke oil. It works just as well, costs less and smells even better.

What a lovely model that Spam can is! I think it has to be one of the nicest Triang locos with a wonderful representation of those Bulleid sintered wheels. It looks superb with the SR liveried coaches and the Utility van. Fabulous multi train running session and a great fade out at the end with the lovely sound of that motor. Regards, Antony.

Another great video with a strong Southern Region theme, I’m impressed that the ‘Southern’ influence has reached up into the far flung North East of England! The ‘Winston Churchill’ locomotive was a brilliant offering by Tri-ang back in the mid 1960s and was issued not many months following the death of the great man himself… The Tri-ang ‘Winston Churchill was a huge commercial success, how could it not be at a time when Great Britain was still a fervently patriotic country with the WW2 finished just twenty years before. The ‘Winston Churchill’ model stood out from all the other Tri-ang model locomotives at that time and it still is a real classic of that period. Thank you for another excellent video.

That was fun. The Winston Churchill was smoking quite well even at moderate speed. Quite a treat to see it working so well. Fab running session and I do agree about having trains running in opposite directions but it can get a bit frantic. 😊

Good morning Pauline, glad you enjoyed seeing the Winston Churchill with a little light smoking around the railway. Definitely a rewarding experience. I think the added complication of using a camera whilst keeping track of Trains running in opposite directions makes it a little bit more complicated than it might be. Take care. Oscar

Good morning, glad you enjoyed seeing the railway in action. As you say, the Seuthe smoke unit is quite an interesting addition to their range, great play value if it was handled correctly. I found I'm able to get much more of a smoke effect with this early type of unit, but can get quite hot. But all good fun. Oscar

I think that perhaps this was the best Sunday morning running video from you ever Oscar. Classic trains and all so well behaved. I was transported back to Waterloo and the great hustle and bustle of the heydays on BR southern region. As a ten year old in 1960 it was all confusing magic, you brought that feeling back today. I've never had a Winston Churchill, another one to watch out for. Regards, David.

Wonderful memories.. I love the sound of the DMU. How nice to see this group running together? I never realised what a large hollow body that the Warship class had? A look for smoke down the funnel, and you see straight through to the track.. No wonder they have a different sort of echoing sound? Great runner though. Thanks again Oscar, for another trip down memory lane..

The Winston is one Triang's greatest moments. It is such a true model considering how early it was in the range. And a powerful loco too. I have two, one a little better condition than the other, but both running well all these years later. Can easily manage 10 coaches. Great video.

Hello Oscar, it's Martin from the East Riding of Yorkshire, another great video to start my Sunday morning with. It never fails to give me great pleasure to see your trains running round your amazing layout. The memories come flooding back of my railway childhood. As a young lad my parents used to take me to Scarborough on the east coast and I remember there used to be a model railway layout above the amusement arcade, so my parents took me up to see it. All I can really remember now, after all these years is the sound and smell of the trains continually going round the layout, and i was so thrilled to see all the different types of locomotives, coaches and wagons. I am fairly sure that the layout would have been Triang Hornby as I would have been about 9 or10 years old, so that would have been about 1964 or1965 ?. With the passing of time I've forgotten times and dates. But that was always great to see every time we went to Scarborough ( and we always went there by train as well. ) But to get back to your wonderful layout Oscar, sorry, I do ramble on a bit when I start talking about railway memories. It was great to see the Battle of Britain class locomotive, or as they used to be called, spam cans. I always think that the buildings on your stations are the best ones that Triang Hornby ever made. Your green three car emu looks amazing going round the layout. Are there any particular items that you are still looking for Oscar ? Either rolling stock or buildings ? Well thank you once again Oscar for showing me your truly awesome layout. Well now it's time for my tea and toasted tea cake as I watch your video again. Keep safe Oscar and have a good week ahead. 👍🚂🚃

Good evening Martin, thanks again for looking in. It's amazing how sight, sounds and smells stick in the memory but dates don't, also, telephone numbers & email address's seems to vanish from the memory banks quite rapidly! Glad you enjoyed seeing these items in action, I've got my eye out for some of those brightly coloured items that Tri-ang Hornby sold for the starter sets in the early 70s. I've missed out a couple of times on one of those Swedish style locomotives... All the best. Oscar

Morning Oscar, Great intro footage and running session. I quite like running in the same direction but not all the time. Re smoke fluid I tried some vaping fluid, not that I use it, and it worked quite well. If anyone is interested it was rhubarb and custard flavour 😂, still needed a fair bit of power though. The 7th edition catalogue is my earliest and a bit fragile. Great to see all the trains running 👍

Good morning Oscar, enjoyed seeing the Winston Churchill having a good run, that is a good train and with the baggage coach. That's the coach I've got dates back to either 1958 to about 1960. My grandson Alfie loves playing with this model for the reason of the opening doors, although its not the best running on our track because of the plastic wheels thick flanges. But we love this coach. Unusual to see you running with smoke! I've two engines with smoke Princess Elizabeth and a B12. And Alfie loves running these as he says they look so real. But again I did at his age. I do love the sound of the EMU running, it's those ribbed wheels, it does sound to me like a powerful electric motor. Nice one Oscar, good Sunday morning session. Take care, and I'm sure when I show him the video a excited Alfie. Eddy Xx

Good morning Eddy, great to hear you and Alfie are having fun with the model railway, the doors on the utility van add a great deal of play value it could've been so easy for them to have moulded them all as one and not opening but it would've been half the model. The smoke units are a lovely novelty, nice to hear you have the Princess and B12 smokers again, they create tremendous fun getting them up and running looking out for whiffs of smoke, and the smell helps, and that little bit extra enjoyment. All the best. Oscar

Your spoiling us with the southern region locomotives recently aren’t you Oscar, the EMU last week and this Winston Churchill this week, no complaining from me though, I have really started to like the southern region locomotives and stock, 7P5F is the power classification of the locomotive, 7P means it is a very good passenger locomotive and 5F means that it is also a very capable freight locomotive, it also shows that it is a mixed traffic locomotive and in fact because it’s a mixed traffic locomotives that’s the whole reason why these were built in the first place, because it was wartime when these were built the conditions meant that no new passenger only locomotives would be built so in order to get these locomotives built Oliver Bulleid when he presented the locomotive said it was a mixed traffic locomotive and that’s how he managed to get them built, some say it was him being a bit sly with how he got this order of locomotives done, an overall great model there Oscar and nice to see the smoke as well, keep up the great work Oscar.

Hello Oscar, another nostgic video and regarding the nomenclature you mentioned i do not claim expert status but locos had various classification on them for what they were suitable for . As and example the BR standard 2 10 0 was a 9Fso for the heaviest frieght. Jintys were a 3f so much less of a load. Passenger locos had p classifications to typical a 7P or 8P like a duchess. Of coursexBR classified locos with two classifications such as 7P6F. The Hornby Dublo 8F is another example. The rai Ways also use thngs like 5MT etc, this is fixed traiffic so normally in lined black Hope that helps, please do not take what I say as 100% correct, my white lab coat and plastic classes didnt make me a boffin or expert.

Hi, Tony, great to hear you have your original model. It really was a nice bit of modelling by Tri-ang. I’ve been on a lookout for some Winston Churchill nameplates for sometime and have never come across them as a replacement. I have found some alternative names that are available for the locomotives in the early 70s, I have had to scan the side of a locomotive and print then knife out the name plate for a model of mine of mine with missing nameplates. I’d be happy to send you an email with the file to print your own if that’s of any help, not as good as the real thing, but at arms length they are quite easy to live with. Take care. hi Oscar has anyone ever modified the smoke unit so that it does not need so much power to smoke therefore the engine does not need to go round the layout at top speed
@robinmathews2446
@robinmathews2446 5 ай бұрын
A heavy duty DCC module can deliver full power to an accessory like a smoke unit, while keeping the motor at a steadier speed? But, then the layout must be all wired for DCC? That is a whole new can of worms .. Very expensive, and no longer simply "playing with trains"? Perhaps a small "step-up" transformer inside the loco, could "up the power to the smoke unit" at lower speeds, but would probably burn out the smoke unit at higher speeds? (also don't know if such a device is available anyway)?
@doloresmyatt9737
@doloresmyatt9737 5 ай бұрын
@@robinmathews2446 hi Robin i was thinking of a lot cheaper way of doing it, if you changed the gauge of the wire in the unit so it got to working temp without needing the loco to run a full speed before smoking and have over load unit that stopped it from burning out at full power. Maybe a project for Mr Snooze to work out.
@robinmathews2446
@robinmathews2446 5 ай бұрын
@@doloresmyatt9737 Hi Delores, The voltage from the track is what makes the smoke unit work, but the motor is on the same power? So if more power is sent to the smoke unit, the motor will go faster too? A thicker wire would not help I'm afraid? The voltage running through the wire would still be the same amount of voltage from the track to run the motor.. Sorry !!
@robinmathews2446
@robinmathews2446 5 ай бұрын
Did you mean to alter the wire in the element itself to heat the smoke oil? I think that if that was possible, the manufacturers would have already done it?
@doloresmyatt9737
@doloresmyatt9737 5 ай бұрын
@@robinmathews2446 hi Robin i am thinking the wire gets to operating temp much earlier eg using less power so the loco can go around the layout at a much slower speed and a safety devise would cut in when the temp got too hot as the loco went faster and would draw more current. Tri ang worked to a price and so we would get the cheapest way to make the unit. I have seen American locos smoking their heads off at low speed how did they do it
