Tibial Plateau Fracture with Metal Plate Fixation

Open reduction and internal fixation of tibial plateau fracture. Side plate and multiple screws used to hold fracture fragments together. Fracture lines run into the knee joint and, once healed, can develop into an abrasive opposing surface for the femoral condyles. This situation can eventually result in joint arthrosis and possible total knee replacement.

I'm 4 months into healing a tibial plateau fracture and detached medial meniscus. I have a metal plate and 4 screws in there. They had me bending it 12 hours post surgery and every day since..no down time! Got cleared to put weight on it 1 month ago and am 80% back to normal. Just about have stairs down and running is the last part. I believe the key to healing fast is MOVEMENT immediately and from then on!!!! Immobility lets it stiffen up and makes rehab harder. Good luck all! :)

I'm 4 weeks into healing, after a fwit in an SUV t-boned me on my motorbike. I felt a bit sick watching the animation but I understand a bit more now. Got a plate and 9 screws in there. Thanks for your comments, Ljiljana, I'll make sure I keep up the physio.

I have tibia multiple fractures, my bone got many fractures from knee to downwards (just like when u hit bamboo it splits in multiple lines like that ) grafting was also done from bone taken from left hip and artificial grafting gel was also inserted on my knee . 20 inch titanium plate was inserted with 19 screws. My operation was done on first week of January 2017 . After the stitch was cut which was around 3 weeks of operation I had infection on my leg which took time to heal . Temporary support was given , for alternative day dressing of the wound . The wound took 1 month to heal . So after almost 2 month after my operation casting was done . Cast was removed after long 3 months and 20 days as the bones took very long time to heal. On 15 2017 June cast was removed and was shown simple exercises to perform and yet not to start weight bearing . 15 July after check up I was asked to start physiotherapy session nd slowly touch my feet to the floor . After long 7 month of confinidness felt the freedom of feeling my feet . With 6 days of physiotherapy I am not able to slowly walk on both legs but for support I am asked to take support of crutches . Presently the knee is still not 100 healed but I am allowed to walk around slowly with stick . Great work by the doctor .

Last month i slipped on ice and fractured both tibila and fibula bones right at the bottom close to my ankle. My family thought it was a sprain at first but i wore a splint first, then a external fixator, then hsd it removed and had the plates and scress in me. Im in a red cast. Im glad this didn't happen to my papa last month. Better me than him

Crushed my tibial plateau April Friday 13, 2012. Only had a 7 inch plate and 3 screws put in and didn't damage my femoral cartilage in the accident. I feel like the lucky one here.

I had tibial plateau fracture 2 yrs ago but instead of a Y fracture like shown in the video, it was in pieces literally just from tripping and they had to put in a fixation plate. Instead of a 2 and a half hour surgery like usual, it took over 4 hours. Didn't notice it until the x-rays at the hospital because at the time I was running downhill during the winter (which was a bad idea to begin with) and there was so much adrenalin in my system I didn't feel it until later. Now I have a huge L shape scar on my leg starting at the left side of the knee and 3 quarters down the middle of my leg.

@@xmasterxmaster7122 I came across this thread during my many hours spending time and researching my Tibia Plateau Fracture, Schatzker VI (the worst) recovery. I am now 6 weeks post surgery and had my follow up consultation and xrays, with my surgeon, today. I am now allowed to stop wearing my leg brace 24/7 and to start bending the knee with 6 week goal being 45 degrees. I am still zero weight bearing for another 6 weeks. ie 12 weeks. Am using a wheelchair, my balance sucks and at 58 it's a tad late to take risks. I intend to use a walker once I can start weight bearing. The only thing really concerning me now that the support bandages and brace are off is that I just tried to rub so tissue oil on the area and I have absolutely no skin sensation around the cut. Google info says it's normal for nerve damage after surgery. Just wish my surgeon had warned me. Good luck. We are almost at the same stage of recovery. Sorry see your post was 9months ago. Please give me a heads up on how you are.

@carolmorris404
@carolmorris404 4 жыл бұрын
@@varunkashyap7106 I can walk properly but still take my crutches if I am out in a public place. It's early days for me so no running and yes I can do squats but have not got the all clear to exercise properly until a year has passed. I was originally told about the likelihood of a knee replacement in 3 years and warned that arthritis is also likely. Currently I can say I have almost zero knee pain, I can see the skrews of the plates if I bend my knees in a certain position but when my leg is straight nothing is visible and my scar has healed beautifully. I do, however suffer from lower back pain and my stamina from lack of exertion is so low. The back pain I know is posture related and I am trying to consciously stand straight up with my legs straight and not slightly bent, which is a habit I have developed. Core exercises will also help but that is only likely to start in April 2020.

My wife shattered her TP into many pieces after a fall in early Nov 2013. She had plates put in on both sides. 10hr surgery. After 2 wks in the hospital, then 2 more at rehab, she developed a major infection at the site. She went back into the hospital. Most of the flesh on front shin and around 1 side was removed from knee down 2/3 way to the ankle. Nearly a loss of limb situation. Required reconstructive plastic surgery. 11 surgeries and 2.5 mo in the hospital, including time in the ICU. Finally got home in mid Feb. Now 50% weight bearing and in PT. Not sure what the future will bring but like the end of the video showed, we are expecting a knee replacement when the bone surfaces rub and totally degenerate. Be careful out there! ;-(

I got this in 2016. Worst day of my life. Type V TPF 8 hour surgery. 9 screws 2 plates. I've been having extreme knee pain starting in October of this year. X-rays look good, great space, but my Patella has some cartilage flap and I can't really walk anymore without severe pain. I'm scared to get a TKR because I'm only 37. And TKR success after this injury isn't very good like a normal OA person.

1 month ago for me, most of these fixations remain simply because the risk of further injury outweighs any benefit you could get from removing 'em. 16 screws into my tibia, 4 into the femoral IM rod and it's the metal plate that messes with my CB radio - they tell me even pulling the IM rod just ain't an option despite the radio interference ;)
