I came out of the injury and only biked for 56 miles before the race, and 4 times I went on a 10-mile run before the race! Because of my torn calf muscle, I swam for many hours to keep my body in good shape. I did finish my first Ironman in less than 13 hours. I knew in my head that I could do it, and I did. To be more transparent, I couldn't walk for at least 3 days after the race.

In 1998, my friend completed Ironman Canada with 6 hours training in the entire year before the race. We kidded him about over training because he was not the coveted last finisher, completing the race in 16:32. He did not run, bike or swim in his normal life activities. Needless to say he was not in great shape after the race but he finished and we all shared a beer after the race. I certainly do not recommend doing what he did. But with determination, doing an Ironman with six months training is most certainly achievable. And following a MPC training program should prepare almost anyone with a decent amount of fitness and plenty of determination and perseverance to complete an Ironman in good shape. True story!

I used Phils plans for my first Ironman, I averaged 10 hours per week due to family time and work. I was slow but finnished the race feeling healthy. Great advice in this video. Phil knows his shit 👍

Cracking video Phil. I was literally planning next year out and this video popped up. Some great things to consider - especially as I’m relatively new to endurance events.

I used Phil’s 18 week Beginner Ironman program and finished well under my time goal of under 13 hours. Highly recommend this schedule. First full distance, with one 70.3 completed. I did transition straight from 16 weeks of marathon training, 2 week rest between training plans.

Ive signed up for my first triathlon, long course, next september. Comng from 15 year ultra running experience (100mile+) and strong endurance swimmer. Cycling is my one weakness, but can do 50 miles and few thou feet already. Train about 15 hours a week, so this video given me great reassurance its vey doable for me - thanks

With that background, I think you'll be fine. And having done 100+ mile runs, I imagine you'll also be good at pacing yourself sensibly too, which is super important in Ironman. Good luck!

I had success doing my first Ironman using Phil’s 30 week training program. I had a good base doing 2 half Ironman per year as well as shorter distances. Additional advice is that even if you do the training, you need to have a solid understanding of nutrition for the race. It can all come tumbling down if you don’t get it right no matter how fit you are.

Totally agree with this comment. Physical preparation is what most people think about, but there’s so much else to learn and master to be successful in long distance racing. Hydration, nutrition, bike mechanics, swim technique, and transition planning are all huge components and take time to learn.
