Western music was banned for so long, just traditional music and BAD BAD soviet pop to listen to. I think I'd flip out and get excited freely listening to real music live for the first time too.

@@AwesomeFish12 What tf are you talking about. People in the USSR could listen to foreign music during the Soviet Union, it just had to be approved by the government. Sometimes foreign artists held concerts in the Soviet Union. Western music wasn't banned altogether. And music was relatively diverse, not just "traditional music" (which was more classical than trad btw. Hearing actual ethnographic songs from villages was extremely rare). Pop music wasn't bad at all, it was actually very good, with strong melodies etc (I'd say Russian pop music today is generally worse than it was 35 years ago). Even Soviet cartoons and movies had excellent music (classic example: Bremenskiye Muzykanty). Most music was rooted in a well-structured, classical melody tradition though, so at some point a lot of people wanted to hear something fresher (mainly younger people). The problem is that you weren't allowed to be a pro musician and be paid for it unless you were a member of the musician's union of the Soviet Union (a.k.a a government approved musician/composer), which meant you had to go really underground to showcase your music. Even though music in the Soviet Union wasn't as diverse as in some other countries until the mid 80's, it still was great music. Metal that came into the USSR during the Perestroika felt super fresh, which is why a lot of people liked it (and why a lot of Russians are metalheads even today). Metal was associated with freedom and coolness. Doesn't mean that old music was not "real". Stop spreading bs when you know nothing what life is or was like in other countries. Source: I'm Russian

Precisely. I enjoy many styles of music, but metal is so...empowering...energetic...and yes, anger-expressing/releasing sometimes. And some of its lyrics are downright poetry, such as some of Ozzy's, Iron Maiden's, and Metallica's, which make you think.

Exactly. This is why i hate the part about they say it's bad and used for torture, that could evidently predispose them to dislike the music in the middle of the song. Any noise loud enough can be extremely disrupting, not just metal.

I loved how the old guy immediately got that it was a lullaby, but his kids would not sleep after haring it. That was priceless. The guy with the cool hat being mostly concerned about the crowd was very nice, he didn't seem to like the music but would like to invite them to lunch.

I have no basis for this theory mind you other than myself, but i feel like metal and other fast/loud music like this has to have some sort of relation to people with anxiety or some form of ADHD. Like, your mind NEVER STOPS racing, so something else coming in and doing the racing for you helps relax us. I get some of my best work done when i have something like Death Grips, The Prodigy, or Knocked Loose in the background.

Yeah, the only thing that annoyed me was the takes of the interviewer on the subject, like: "do you need aspirins?" and "no matter how hard you try, some things won't mix up together, like water and oil. This would never mix up with nature" and others. The thing is, art is a subjective thing and it can be brought up to the table in almost infinite ways, since every and each people has its own takes on various different subjects. Yeah, I think I got this out of my chest hahaha

@@dmytrocks it's just remarkable because this is the 5th biggest concert ever held with somewhere around 1.6 million in attendance. At the time, I believe this was the 2nd biggest concert ever held, 2nd to a concert held in Paris 1 year prior that had 2.5m in attendance. Compared to countries like India, or China with populations well over 1 billion people, that may not seem like a lot, though I suspect it still is. Especially for western society where historically we don't often gather that many people unless it's for battle, and they were all there to rock the fuuuuuck out 🤘🤘

@@Lamren I'm 62 I never got into the head banging music. In my teens heavy metal was Deep Purple, Kiss, and a few others I liked and listened to, but as they got deeper they made my head hurt, still does. Your parents probably listened to the beginnings of heavy metal themselves.

I was the odd one enjoying from a young age stuff like Devin Townsend, System of a down, Megadeth, ... I know my dad listens to at least Devin Townsend and Porcupine Tree now, but I don't think my mom will ever "really" listen to heavy metal ever, it's a style you need to get used to and I myself dislike a lot in it ;-)

Alas, some softer more melodic heavy metal never stoped existing. And in the 90s, in Europe (with a few bands in South America) you got some examples of Symphonic Power Metal. Check out Nightwish's Ghost Love Score and The Greatest Show On Earth (Tampere version)...

I'm 62 years old female metal head. In the 70's with 17/18 I listened to Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Rush, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and many more... My mother got into metal and heavy metal when she was about 60 and this was in the 80's/90's. Our neighbors in the street probably thought my Mom was nuts, because every Monday when she cleaned she listened to very loud Metal. When you came up the street you could hear the music already 🎶😂 She still listened to Rammstein and Metallica when she was 80 +. My dad was into classical music and when he was 70 he started with Pink Floyd and later Metallica. So music has no age barriers.

@@LazizbekYusupov92 the low growl is pretty similar to a dog or bear, false chords bear similarities to frogs, birds and wildcats depending on the notes. There's also pig squeals and what not. In fact some of the vocals are just backwards snoring.

In 2022 it costs upwards of $5000 to get the same seating. If you get stuck on balcony or row 300 seat 75 your still gonna pay over $400 and you will be looking at a screen just to see the band! No fucking thank you.. I can get alot of majik mushrooms for that and go to a full out concert in my living room on my radio! Fuck Russia!

Yeah I respected that the guy wasn't judgemental about it; it just wasn't for him. There's no faulting that. I understood where he was coming from...I love metal but screamo literally affects me on a neurological level. It's not that it's hard. I LOVE Slipknot until the singer comes in then I can't turn the volume down enough. Not a criticism...that scream tone makes me physically uncomfortable. It's like it's in my genes to get away from it. I can imagine this guy might have felt similarly about Metallica.

Music is a quality that transcends borders and cultures. It is one of the few universal loves for humankind. But yes, I was surprised she was into metal as well. I need to believe less in stereotypes.

I was surprised by this too - but then I reminded myself that I've listened to tribal and other music both traditional and otherwise and it's connected to something within me even though it's not my culture and/or foreign to me, so I imagine that it's something similar for these people. It's just hard to imagine that when it's a type of music that's so familiar to you!
