It’s funny to hear them say we don’t like spicy food. Then they eat our spicy food, and say “how can they eat something so spicy” 😂
@johnmorphy5435

There is a difference between the spices being used and the way they are used. Spicy in the western world means hot and it's not exactly the same way they mean it The translation is also probably not spot on at at times

I speak their language and from how I'm understanding what i think you're referencing is, that he's saying we Americans say we don't like spicy food however the dish they're eating is spicy. But keep in mind, back home, spices doesn't only refer to chili hot spice.. it also refers to salt ( and many other ingredients which aren't necessarily spicy) which Americans call seasonings. That's a slight twist to the translations shown below. 🙂

@@cptcosmo that is so nice, I use to have that, but, I can no longer eat tomatoes or chicken, so I can't eat that anymore, I use to grow tomatoes and so did my mum, and the year before I found out that I shouldn't eat them, between my mum and I, we had about 50 tomato plants, as my mum made tomato relish, tomato pickles and tomato, pineapple and passionfruit jam, we grew a few different varieties. Out of all the food I had to stop eating, I miss tomatoes the most.

Here in The Netherlands we would put cooked vegetables in the mashed potatoes (potatoes and vegetables are cooked together in a pan) and call it Stamppot. To stamp in Dutch is mash. There are several varieties depending on the vegetables and meat used. We add gravy to it. We bake meatballs in a pan in a little oil or butter.

How interesting, I'm intrigued of the Dutch way of preparing this dish. Thank you for sharing. In Pakistan, when we have meatballs, we usually prefer to have it with a large amount of gravy as they said. It can be eaten with roti (a traditional style of bread) or rice.
@palantir135
@palantir135 Жыл бұрын
@@Dem1Der usually we have a special smoked sausage, rookworst, with stamppot. If you make stamppot and you’ve cooked the potatoes and vegetables, first get rid of the water in the pan before you start mashing. The recipes will be on the internet somewhere. Boerenkoolstamppot Andijviestamppot Hutspot (carrots and onions) We also have a Dutch split pea soup, erwtensoep, again with the smoked sausage. We eat that with slices of full grain bread. If you had a bowl (or two) with that you don’t need anything else to eat.

Our mashed potatoes are loaded with butter and milk, and salt and pepper and a pinch of garlic powder. In Canada we like our meat balls like out meatloaf and that has eggs, bread crumbs sauted onions and spices how you like it. Mostly I cheat by putting the ready made powders you can get. Sometimes I'll even put in a spoon or two of salsa as this already has all the veggies in it. Only Tostados salsa is good for this.

I expect there are machines making meatballs but we mostly buy sausage meat and roll it into balls by hand, adding paprika, basil, parsley, garlic, salt, pepper, maybe worcestershire sauce, maybe chili. Best mash needs butter and milk and as food companies have been told to take salt out of our diets, you may well need to add salt at the table. Where does the dish come from? I would guess the thriftiness of our ancestors, a good way to use up spare meat, and the potatoes are the bulk of the meal. But there are hundreds of varieties of potato and some mash better than others. The potato is to the European/American what rice is to you and pasta to Italians. We will eat our potatoes most days of the week. Meatballs are older than potatoes since potatoes came back to Europe from the New World (Peru) in the 16th century, so havent been part of our diet for very long. (We ate turnips before that)

I love these guys to pieces but I REALLY wish that someone could PLEASE thoroughly explain to them (maybe with some visual/video examples to accompany) that America and multitudes of "European/Western" countries are virtual melting pots of just about every culture and ethnicity that you can possibly imagine. Because of the steady and very diverse stream of immigration of people from darned near any country you can imagine over the last couple of hundred years, you can find just about any/every type of cuisine, from every one of those cultures in both homes and restaurants. For instance, here in the U.S. even smaller cities can have pretty diverse populations, but the big cities like New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Seattle, Milwaukee, Nashville, Houston, New Orleans, Miami and so on, are even more of a "melting pot" of cultures. And the people from all across the globe who have settled in these regions of the country, brought with and introduced their customs, traditions and most definitely their food, in their new home and with their new neighbors... who are quite likely to be immigrants from multiple different countries themselves. All of the cultures who've come here have contributed to every aspect of our society and in some cases might have modified their traditional food/recipes/dishes to better suit the tastes of entirely different cultures or some might have opened restaurants where they serve their dishes exactly as they would have been "back home" or as they used to say, "in the old country". Sweet, salty, sour, spicy, bland, ultra spicy, tangy, stewed, grilled, sauteed, baked, braised, pan fried, deep fried and roasted are ALL part of what's often called "American food" including the ingredients and methods of preparation. I guess you could say that just about anything goes! We have such a "multicultural fusion" that I'm sure it has to be extremely confusing for people who are familiar (most often) with the same food/recipes that they and multiple generations of their ancestors before them, have consumed. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that while there are certainly foods/recipes that were created here, simply because a specific dish might be thought of or even referred to as "American" doesn't mean that it originated in the U.S. A dish can even be considered wildly popular in +(and therefore associated with) the US, but that dish could actually be a modified, mixed or even "authentic" recipe from another country altogether. That's why I think it would be extremely beneficial for the team to learn about how the very diverse and multicultural foods of "America/The West" came about and why so many of them can seem to be so different and so familiar at the same time. Love the video and those meatballs and mashed potatoes sure did look delicious! Glad they enjoyed another new (to them) type of food. Much love and abundant blessings to everyone in the TPT Family! 💛🕊️🙏

We have many different ways to use meatballs. We have them as you are here, we have them with spaghetti and tomato sauce, we have them stuffed with cheese or stuffing, we have them on sub/grinder sandwiches...so many different ways to use meatballs. We even eat them as hors d'oeuvres tossed in grape jelly and chili sauce...really yummy.

Every time I watch one like this one, I wish I could go cook for these guys for a week! There is no reason for mashed potatoes to be flavorless! Toss a couple of sliced garlic cloves and a spoon of salt in the water as they boil...add some butter and milk when you mash them. It doesn't take much work to make tasty mashed potatoes. They are good sports to keep eating it when it didn't taste good.

In Quebec Canada this is called a Canadien Plate (if you add beef gravy to it). Meat and potatoes are a very traditional combination in Canada and we also don’t traditionally use a lot of spice or chilies like the USA does.

How come you give them spoons when they need forks? Spoons are used for soups, liquids,...forks are used mostly to eat meat and potatoes and the like. They can't cut anything with that spoon. If they had a fork, they could stab the meat with the tines, and have a much easier time. 🤷🏼

In their culture, no utensils are used. They eat with their hands. They only started with utensils because people complained. The only time utensils are used is during the filming of this show. Spoons are easier than forks for them.

Ghee should be in the mashed potatoes. Perhaps they can't taste the ghee. Btw, potatoes will taste a little sweet if they are old potatoes due to the activation of the surgery starch in potatoes if they sit uncooked for a long time.

Meat Balls & Mashed Potatoes aren't really a common American dish (although would be good.) Meatballs are usually served with Spaghetti, on a sandwich, or in a gravy like Sweedish. Mashed potatoes also usually have a lot of butter here in the US.
