Tribeca Display Follow-up - Err Fix

In this video we look at my 2009 Subaru MFD Multi-Function Display having Er and Err errors. I take time to show more detail under the microscope of the issues with the connector solder joints. In a Previous video we took a look at the Dim Multi-Function Display. We looked into how easy it is to get to and remove the display as well as reinstall. This first video also shows some detail on disassembly of the MFD. I also show some parts of the backlight repair attempt that I originally intended to share, but in the end just had to get a used replacement . Mine ended up having an issue in the LCD Display panel and a new one seems to be unavailable. Hope you find this video informational and helpful. Thanks for watching.

I've fixed several things by re-flowing broken solder joints, including my garage door opener($), the ABS module in my Corvette ($$), and the driver's footwell module in my Wife's BMW($$$). Between those three items alone I've saved over $3,000. Now, my first step troubleshooting intermittent issues with PCB equipped electronics is to re-flow solder joints. GREAT video, and MUCH cleaner work than I'm known for! :)

I had a similar thing happen on my 2003 toyota camry, at first reflowing solder didn't work, and I left it for quite a number of years, then one day I finely had enough and had another go that time it worked. My understanding of the cause was the implementation of Rohs and the change over to lead free solder caused lots of issues in the early times when manufacturing globally changed over from leaded solder.

Thank you so much for uploading such a detailed but easy to follow video on the MFD repair. I went through the amazon list at the bottom of the video you posted and have uploaded the following items into my Amazon Shopping Cart to attempt the repair myself: 1. Hakko FX888D-23BY Digital Soldering Station (I debate getting the Weller 200W iron since its much cheaper, but it wasn’t the one you seemed to be using on the video) 2. Conical Bent Hakko Tip (would i actually need this?) 3. Amtech 559 Flux 4. MG chemicals leaded solder (would I need to buy this or would it come in the Hakko station?) 5. Lesnow solder wick braid (would this be okay to use instead of buying the expensive desoldering gun?) Also, to what temperature would I need to set the soldering iron? Seems like I need to set a temperature- what temperature do you recommend? Do you think I could get by without purchasing a microscope? Let me know if what I am getting is all I need to do this repair or if there is anything else.

The Hakko is an excellent Iron and well worth the price. The curved tip is one of my favorites, but the iron comes with a very good tip also and it works very well. It's all a preference really. The temp I typically have mine set for is around 650⁰F. I will push up to 700 if the boards are thick and I will also drop down to around 600 for thinner boards. The braid wick is great for desoldering and works even better with the flux added. The solder is a must and the iron does not come with any unless that has changed. I do have a smoke absorber to help with fumes and it helps. I have in the past made sure I gently breathe out while soldering the spot and gently blowing away the fumes from my face. If you find it easier you can simply get a small fan blowing it from you or simply buy the smoke absorber. Best of luck!

Finally received everything in the mail- just picking up some 91% alcohol from the pharmacy. Is it okay to apply the alcohol directly on the board? It won’t damage the motherboard?

@@ssmohamm As long as it is at least 91% it's fine. I usually try to keep it local to the area I am cleaning.
