The piece that begins and ends this video is David Maslanka’s ‘Traveler’ for Wind Ensemble.
He dedicated this piece to his friend who was retiring from his music directing job. He said, “the inspiration for writing this piece was from the feeling of a big life movement as I contemplated my friend’s retirement. We tend to think of retirement as “the end,” and the last stage of life as an unhappy decline of body, mind, and potentials. By contrast, in meditation, I saw my friend as a traveler, not only through this life, but from life to life. The end of this life is not “the end,” but the gathering of the soul for the next step of an infinite journey.”
If you listen to the full piece, it begins with an “assertive statement of the chorale melody “Nicht so traurig, nicht so sehr” (“Not so sad, not so much”). The chorale was not chosen for its title, although in retrospect it seems quite appropriate.”
In this video, I featured the very ending of his piece where both the music and “life” is coming to an end. Maslanka also said, “The last part of life need not be sad. It is an accumulation of all that has gone before, and a powerful projection into the future - the potential for a tremendous gift of life and joy. And so the music begins with energy and movement, depicting an engaged life in full stride. At the halfway point, a meditative quiet settles in. Life’s battles are largely done; the soul is preparing for its next big step.”
I think this is the perfect piece to let both sad and happy tears out while listening. Something has come to an end, but also, we can hope that he’s in a better place now. He has blessed us with so many amazing gifts during his life...his music, his artistry, his activism, etc.
I think the ending of ‘Traveler’ is so bittersweet. The melody is both melancholy and gently reassuring. When I listen to this song, I feel like I can shut my eyes and cry a mixture of sad and happy tears and reflect on the ups and downs of life and let everything out. I hope you are able to experience this piece in the same way I do.
“In our hearts, our minds, our souls
We travel from life to life to life
In time and eternity.” -David Maslanka

I really want to give the girl in the black "toxic masculinity" shirt my most sincere and honest gratitude for saying "don't hesitate to listen to it because you're afraid". It's been over two years and I just found this video. He was my favorite singer and I had his (and SHINees) music on repeat every day for over 6 years. I have not listened to his music since the day he passed because I have been so so afraid. I felt guilty because I couldn't do it and I didn't think people would understand my fear. Hearing someone who wasn't even a fan say this was very impactful. Additionally, she said it’s okay to be sad. When I showed my sadness to others they shamed me saying he was just an idol not a family member. But he was all I had for years. I don’t feel shame now and this let me release so many tears I’ve been hiding from grief and tears of relief as I know now it’s okay what I’m feeling. Thank you so so much. I think I am ready now.

I want to say that those who shamed you for grieving and mourning are not the ones who matter. The friend I had who invalidated me for grieving, I ended up dropping her as a friend. My high school teacher consoled me through his passing and reminded me that Jonghyun is someone I and others admire. It's okay to grieve over someone we look up to and consider our pillars, no matter if we knew them or their language or met them or just watched them. I'm glad you don't feel shame, and I hope you are doing fine.

ReacttotheK Thank you Umu for this video and the beautiful piece you selected, thank you too to all the reactors for your sincerity and comforting words. Although I am a Shawol and even tho I feel I have a stronger connection with someone else in the group Jonghyun's music, art, words and actions, touched my heart multiple times and I wanted more and more people to know, enjoy and appreciate his creations. Now that so many people are giving him attention it leaves me with a bittersweet taste because I know the reason behind the hype but I'm also very happy that his art is being appreciated. I don't really know where I wanted to go with that I guess I was just rambling but thank you again for the way you have handled this with respect and listening to us, his fans.

Beautiful words, feedbacks and advices. Thank you so much for this video. Jonghyun was a beautiful human. He understood the pain of others and comforted them with his music. There are so few, almost no singers, who sincerely speak through their music. I think Jonghyun is the best singer in Korea along Kim Junsu and Kim Jaejoong and more. Just like Junsu and Jaejoong he is one of the few artists who is super sincere and honest with his work. He has so much wisdom and support for others. Not only the greatest and most passionate entertainer to ever live, but also one of the most sincere, honest, understanding and kindest singer I've seen since I've got into Kpop in 2009. I loved his wise and comforting words on his radio show. He was a stunning radio host. And he is super talented in composing and writing lyrics. He has a very big understanding of music. He put his mind, soul and heart into his songs. He had the whole package. His vocal range was amazing, and his voice was heavenly. There's no comparison in the Kpop industry. He is irreplaceable. His love for people who needed help, his love for music, his overall essence, will remain long after. I would love to see more videos of Jonghyun in the future by you. Jonghyun has soooooo many beautiful songs that he composed and wrote and is about his own stories. Also songs he composed and wrote for other singers like Lee Hi - Breathe and IU - Gloomy Clock. I won't get more music of him anymore. I would be so happy if you could react to a song every 2 or 3 months to keep him living and remember him and his stunning work. You could even react to some of his high note and best vocal performances collection or even Shinee performances. His talent is too breathtaking to be left out. Some people admire great artists like Michael Jackson, Bob Marley or Elvis Presley, and then there is me who found her love in Kim Jonghyun. For me, he is the best human and musician ever to walk on this planet.

oh gosh I think we share lot of the same feelings about music not just towards Jonghyun. SHINee and JYJ are the only two groups I hold close. I think it has to do with their sincerity. Like Jonghyun, JYJ members are very involved in the creative process of their music which I really value and Jonghyun, Junsu and Jaejoong really are some of Korea's best singers. I've just started listening to Jonghyun's voice again, but I was relying heavily on Jaejoong to keep me going. I am holding back on listening to my fave JYJ song, In Heaven though knowing the reason behind why Jaejoong wrote it, just really hits too close to home right now.

Glad to see someone who feels the same. I know what you mean T_T I remember Jaejoong starting to compose and write song in SM and after that they left and start releasing heaven like songs which they/he composed and wrote themselves/himself as JYJ and also as a solo singer. After him Jonghyun started doing it. For me Junsu, Jonghyun and Jaejoong are the real artists and best humans. They are sincere artist who put their soul into their music. Not to forget that their voices are on an totally different level.

There are so many things about this comment, I don't know where to start. I'm 15 now. I was 8 years old when I met Shinee, when I met him, I didn't know much about life at that age, but I knew he was a great singer, a great artist. I grew up with his voice and I'm so glad I did. I have spent all these years showing my friends his videos, mostly his Y si fuera ella version, since it is a song everyone in my country knows, and I would get so happy and proud when they complimented him, he really was my pride, he is still my pride. What happened...it hurts in so many ways, but I think I understand. And I hope someday I will be able to stop crying for him, and instead I will try to remember him with a smile.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but Jonghyun was also atypical of kpop idols in that, BEFORE he was scouted and recruited to be a trainee, he had already quit school in favor of attending music school, a decision his mother supported. He was in a school band as a bassist (where SM discovered him) and the friends with whom he formed a songwriting partnership ("We Freaky") continued to work with him on songs even after his SHINee debut.

I just got into kpop barely 2 months ago, so Jonghyun's passing was very early into my fandom, honestly I didn't really understand the significance or impact of him at the time (other than the tragedy of *anyone* suffering that much). Since then, and especially after this album release, I've come to understand just how talented this man was, and how much he poured into his music for all those who loved it so much. He truly did do well, so well :( Also, the way these React videos have been handled have really just reinforced that this is BY FAR the highest quality channel for reaction videos, not just of kpop but of any topic on KZfaq. Major kudos Umu, you are running things so well here, and the way you and all the reactors have handled this topic is A++++. thank you so much for the reaction! i'm not sure if you're going to do any more reactions of jonghyun's songs, but if you ever decide to, you should listen to his songs "skeleton flower/산하엽" "i'm sorry/미안해" and "let me out/놓아줘" I'm not sure if enough is going on musically to warrant a reaction, so even if you don't, they're still incredibly beautiful songs that you should listen to. and i think that one reactor, the blonde guy, with the glasses and tie, who said he worked a lot (i don't know his name, sorry), would really enjoy his voice in "skeleton flower" and "i'm sorry."

ever since his passing, i haven't been able to listen to his music without crying. the only song i can listen to and enjoy is moon, because it gives me comfort. all these special moons appearing has made me believe he is somehow sending us messages, so knowing he even has a song titled moon and being able to listen to it and hearing him say he'll take us to the moon is really comforting. and while i wasn't able to hold my tears, i still highly appreciate you for doing this. i want people to always remember him for the amazing music he made and the wonderful human he was, and i want him to live on in all his accomplishments as solo and shinee member. thanks for being so respectful and having this on private for so long. even though three months have passed, i'm still hurting just as much, but i believe some people might've been able to handle it better than i do.

i finally worked up the courage to watch this and it made me realise yet again how much i miss him. i haven't been able to listen to much older shinee or any of jonghyun's music because it still hurts me but i've realised how much i've missed it, also. thank you emma and thank you to every reactor for reminding me that even if he's gone, he left so much of his life for us in his music and it'd be a waste to let it disappear. i deeply respect every opinion and i'm happy that he was able to move their hearts with his music.

I started crying before End of A Day even began playing. I'm not a Shawol, but I don't think you need to be to realise how special and unique he was. Unfortunately I'm familiar with the pain of losing someone you love so much to something so terrible, and my warmth and support goes out to those who held him close to their heart. If I, a person who was relatively disconnected from Jonghyun can find myself so affected by his passing and still grieving 3 months on, I can only imagine the pain Shawols and his friends and family are still struggling with. I'm so sorry for your loss. Jonghyun, you've worked hard.

'End of a Day' was my introduction to Jonghyun, even before Shinee. Because I haven't been able to go back to the Story Collection 1, this is the first time I've heard it since December. Listening to it "with" someone else helped me. It sounds a little dramatic but thank you for helping me continue to go through this process and being able to get back to appreciating his beloved music again as something that is beautiful and comforting and inspiring like its meant to be and has been for me. (Someday I'll get to where I can listen to 'Happy Birthday' which is personally special to me) Thank you. thankyouthankyouthankyou

All I can say is thank you. This video was a beautiful tribute to his life and his music. I'm still struggling with being able to listen to his music and SHINee's music, but everyday it gets a little bit easier. Everyday when I find myself able to listen to another one of his songs without crying, I remember that I had the chance to know a beautiful human being with a beautiful soul and beautiful thoughts. Everyday I remember again why I love him. It gives me great joy to hear other people enjoy his music and relate to his music so I really appreciated hearing all the thoughts of the reactors and the way that Jonghyun's music was able to touch them. I want to thank each and every one of the reactors for their message at the end of the video. In particular, I want to thank Henry for reminding me that his music is but one of the countless reasons to keep going (and for everything else you said, really, from the bottom of my heart, thank you). I also really want to thank Lindsey for what she said about being afraid to listen to his music. I haven't been able to watch the new MV or listen to any of the album yet. I had finally built up the courage to watch it when I saw that this video was posted so I watched this first. I think I'm finally ready to listen to his new music. Thank you all for reminding me to cherish and celebrate his life and his music. That is what I will do forever. To Jonghyun, the person who always understood me best, the person who dried my tears with his music, the person who gave me the courage to face everyday as no one but my most honest, true self, my puppy, my dinosaur, my angel, my starlight, my moon. I want to return to you the words that you gave to us: "When it becomes tiring and I want to give up When I am weak and I want to run away Your small hand becomes my biggest strength For the rest of my life, I’ll sing a song for you.” You did so well, my love. Thank you.

I'm happy that they are praising his music so much. Jonghyun was extremely talented, also in regards to music. And you're right, we should appreciate his music, his wonderful gift to this world, instead of being saddened by his passing. Jonghyun's music is amazing, and even though he's not technically here anymore, maybe he is still somewhat present in his music. I think that is a really comforting thought. But even then, this video almost brought me to tears. I have been avoiding most of his music for the past few months, because I didn't know if I was rely to listen to it again. The other day, I listened to "Crazy" for the first time, and my heart still ached.

Being a fan of SHINee for so many years was such a privilege for me. I never favoured one member over another, but I did feel a connection with Jonghyun not just as an artist, but as someone who I could relate to in my struggles. He told us countless times to never be afraid of our emotions, and to always love and respect those around us. He was such a beautiful person; always accepting those that were different to him. When he passed I was in denial for so long - others questioned why I was mourning him. But why shouldn't I? We mourn the times when we are no longer able to see the people we cherish live their lives; to grow older, to experience more of what this life has to offer them. We mourn those we love and I loved (love) Jonghyun so, so damn much. He's my pride, someone who helped me through my darkest times and told me that it was okay to be the way I am. He taught me to always appreciate whatever and whomever is around you, to follow your dreams no matter how old you are. He was, and will continue to be, an inspiration to so many of us. To those who've grown with him for the last 9 years, or those who've stumbled across him right this second. His passion, his talent, his heart - everything about him won't ever be forgotten. While I am heartbroken that I will no longer see more of his dreams come true, I am so grateful for the 7 years that I've known him; to have watched him become the man he is today. We are blessed to have the things he loved so dearly left with us: his music, his members, his legacy. Jonghyun, you really did well. You've gone ahead of us, but a piece of you will always be here to remind us of the times we had with you. I pray that SHINee members and his family find comfort in his many achievements in life, and that they're soon able to smile with all their heart once more. Thank you Jonghyun. Thank you SHINee. Thank you SHINee World. And thank you, for this wonderful reaction.

As a musician myself who has loved Jonghyun for almost 8 years and will never stop loving him, I really appreciate all of your inputs on his music. To me, he's the best lyricist/composer/artist in kpop. And I'm glad some of you liked him so much. It means a lot that people are still listening to his music and not forgetting him. Edit: I commented before getting to the end of the video bc I was already so touched I guess, but I really appreciate the comforting words for fans. He's always been my inspiration in everything that I do, and was really just my motivation to keep going. I've always felt so similar to him in so many ways. Ever since 3 months ago I haven't been the same person. But I'm trying for him because I feel this need to be the person he would want me to be. Even when everything feels so hard, I'll always be with him.

I never knew about Shinee until I got into EXO which lead me to SuperM. I remember reading about him in the comments section and immediately pulling up articles on his death. Never heard one song but still it made my heart break. Listening to the raw depth of his music connected me to a dear friend who was murdered only a year ago. I never realised how raw that wound still was until I listened this. I wish I could have said thank you before you left us. For all that you have done, I have never known you but your music will always hold a special place in my heart. RIP.

Thank you for the amazing video. I didn't imagine I would cry that much. Being a shawol for such a long time, I'm feeling so sad and sometimes it's hard to even think positively. I miss my Dino so badly. It took almost a month to start listening to shinee again and this is the first time I listen to Jjong's solo since December. I almost gave up in the beginning of this video, because I was crying so much my head started aching, but I'm actually glad I didn't. It was really good to listen to all those compliments to Jjong's voice and compositions. He should always be reminded as the great poet | artist he is. And I really liked all those words at the end, especially "The passing of Jonghyun is really unspeakably terrible but the art that he left behind for us falls into the joyful category. His music is one of the many countless reasons to keep going and wake up and fight". You are my pride. You worked hard. You did well.

Thank you Umu for everything you have done, it must have been emotionally difficult on you too. You have been so kind and understanding towards Shawols. I want to thank everyone in the video but in particular Henry. His words at the end were so accurate and articulate in so far as understanding how much and why he meant so much to fans. With such a strong connection the pain of separation is inevitably even more difficult. He gave us so much over many years and really bared his soul. It is not easy to simply 'get over it' as my family would say.

7:50 exactly. it was a cry for help. every song he wrote was a piece of his mind and it was him reaching out and telling the world he needed help. no one listened. it's the same thing for everyone, not just jonghyun. we try and try and try to get the words out but no one hears it. it's incredibly draining just to open our mouths and breathe and everyone is too ignorant and self-absorbed to care. this is why mental health education and treatment is so important. so many people feel like he did and most of them can't get any help. learn the signs, help us.

Also their analyses were so interesting. Jonghyun and SHINee's songs have helped me get through all of my teenage years. So it was very very nice to have them taken appart. There aren't usually many reactions to them in general so this was wonderful. I enjoyed every single second of it. So I thank you from all of my heart. This gave me so much hope again. SHINee was the first ever kpop group I began to like, and I remember watching as the members grew and matured through the years. I remember Jonghyun's first solo album coming out, and I thought, "Yeah. I chose a great group of people to support." They were part of the reason I myself didn't end my life, and I will never be able to repay them for that. But it hurts knowing I could not offer the same support to him that he once unknowingly offered me. Jonghyun was a flame. He was beautiful and held so much in his heart. It's been 3 months, but I still can't watch him without crying knowing we've lost such a soul.

What was said at 28:15 is exactly why I got my tattoo of the album art from the 'She Is' album. Seeing it reminds me of how much happiness and strength Jjongs music gave me and when mental illness threatens to take over I use it as something solid and real to keep me grounded. Even if I'm going through the worst states of mental health, I'll have his music here to keep me company and to remind me of what's real and what's not, to remind me of why I need to keep fighting, to remind me that I need to stay alive. I owe him my life in countless ways so I've told myself that I'm not going to lose it. For him, I stay alive.

I grew up with Shinee since they debuted in 2008. And Jonghyun has always been my favourite singer, since my vocal style has been inspired by him, from a lot of times listening to his singing. And since his passing, it's been very hard to watch shinee music videos, listening to their songs on spotify isn't a problem, but watching a video and just seeing jonghyun there gets me teared up. And "End of a Day" got me hard in the feels and i was tearing up. And it was also believed that that song was a message that Jonghyun wanted people to say to him, since around that time, he was going through some tough times personally.

thank you for making a tasteful and informed reaction. months ago I saw too many ppl posting disrespectful videos (in the title, thumbnail, the tone, etc.) and it angered me so much even not being a shawol, but just as someone who enjoyed them and admired Jonghyun in particular. thank you for making something thoughtful and sensitive to those who love him also appreciated the love for his shoes haha

Thank you for this video, guys! It's still hard to listen to his voice, but we should do it, because He will be happy to know that we love him forever. He create an amazing music, so we just listen to it and smile. He went to a better world, but he left part of his soul with us. He worked hard and it's time to rest for him.

One of the many reasons I love art so much, especially music and literature, is because interpretation is everything. And despite arguments on whether intent means anything, I really think it is important to consider. Jonghyun was an amazing concept artist and as mentioned, he had such a vision. Every time I listen to one of his songs or watch a MV, I am completely immersed. And Jonghyun was not only such an incredible artist in the composition of his music and manipulation of his beautiful voice, but also in his ability to understand and diffuse human nature and emotion. He was so special and he will be so missed forever. You did well, Jonghyun. Thank you for giving us such a gift with your life, love, and music. 💙 And thank you, Umu and the artists who contributed to this video-it was amazing and so touching. And Henry, your comments on Jonghyun’s life and legacy had such an effect on me. Any time I’m having a difficult time or missing Jonghyun a lot, I will return here.

Its been some time since he was passing. I was avoiding listening to his solo because its unbearable and it reminds me of every tiring or emotional day and his song kinda soothed/cheered me up when it is blaring through my ipod. Listening to his song now reminds me that every "relieved moments" or happy moments in the past has became bleaked and grey because i will always remember the sadness i felt when he is gone. And also i will never have a relieved moments again in the future because each of his song only reminds me of his passing. But watching this and one of the reactor said his voice like a blanket, i cried. Yes, his voice, esp on the solo songs, also reminds me that his voice has a power to soothe me still even tho it brings back the painful memory of losing him. anyway i dont even know what im talking right now but i am so glad to find this video and celebrate his presence and his work and his life. Thankyou, creators and reactors. It means alot.

This amazing talent left us way too early. Thank you for the way you handled this reaction. He was a truly talented young man and his impact on the industry was huge. I will admit it was the first time I had listened to End of Day since his passing and I cried like a baby. Guess I still haven't got over his death, don't know if I ever will. Thanks again for the sympathetic way this was handled.
