Welcome to the Trick Shift Garage! In this video, we will show you how to change the transmission fluid on our 2007 Nissan Altima. Our Altima came with a drain plug on the transmission pan which makes this process very straight forward. It involves loosening the drain plug over a drain pan and letting all the transmission fluid drain out. Then, tightening to the correct torque rating. Then refilling the transmission with fresh NS-2 grade CVT transmission fluid. We finish it up by checking the fluid level, making sure it's filled up. If you have and questions feel free to comment below, we usually reply in a day :) Enjoy!

268k (got her around 140k 5yrs ago) 2008 altima 2.5L here. This thing would not catch gears after a long drive yesterday and I thought the transmission was shot. Refusing to give up on ole lighting, I decided to flush transmission fluid after watching your video and it fixed all the shifting problems. It was like black obsidian in liquid form was coming out that bad booga. She shifts better than I have ever felt from her. Saved me from a 5yr auto loan. Hello Alex! Personally, I recommend changing the filters every time you change the fluid which is every 60k miles. We have a couple videos that go into detail on how to change the filters. Fluid and (Oil pan) filter: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lceEjdlk1MmpZ4U.html The other filter is a cartridge type: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qcB7Y9KTm7G4YY0.html Hope this helps out, let us know if you have any questions! 🙂

Just a few quick notes for some people looking to change their CVT fluid in their Altimas: 1. Don't think that using CVT fluid other than Nissan NS-2/NS-3 will kill the transmission. You can use any automatic transmission fluid AS LONG AS ITS MADE FOR A CVT. Good replacements include Amsoil CVT fluid, Castrol Transmax CVT fluid (as seen in video) and Valvoline CVT fluid. Heres a good reference video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbOGes96mrK6aIE.html 2. I own a 2008 Nissan Altima coupe with 135,000 miles and I changed my CVT fluid at 110,000 with zero issues. I EXCLUSIVELY use Amsoil CVT fluid since it is high quality and fully synthetic. Just as long as you change the fluid every 20 or 30 thousand miles, it will last. During each change, you should replace the filters as well. Don't believe anyone that says the fluid is "Lifetime" fluid, some Nissan dealers say the same nonsense. These cars have the potential to be very reliable, they just require proper maintenance just like everything else.

@@nothingtodo58 Castrol, Amsoil and Valvoline are not "Off Brand". They make quality fluids made for CVT's that meet and or exceed the specifications of NS-2 and NS-3. So they would perform the same or better than "Name Brand" (whatever that means). At the end of the day, its up to the owner. I'm just saying don't feel like you HAVE TO use NS-2/NS-3.

I don't think replacing the fluid and filter would be the cause outright. What you can do is check the fluid level to make sure it's correct though. If that doesn't help I'd take it to a reputable transmission shop and have them check it out. Thanks for watching! 👍

i found out that the nissan altima 2010 i have has not had a transmission fluid change and its at 200,000 miles its never been flushed nor changed. Should I just change it ? I know taht flushing it now would cause slippage in my clutch but I just watched chrisfixit and he said depending on my transmission fluid look (im assuming its going to look black) i should just do a change which he said just drain the pan underneath and fill up what i drained back into the transmission and thats all. what are your thoughts on this ? should I change it ?

Hmmm, that is weird but so are these CVTs lol! If I was you in that situation, I would change the fluid out at least and see if that helps with the bucking. My guess is that the fluid has never been changed and it's badly degraded at this point. You can also add some Seafoam Trans Tune and see if that helps any. Basically just add it to the transmission just like you would with the regular transmission fluid. I hope this helps, let us know if you have anymore questions, thanks for watching! 👍

@TrickShiftGarage
@TrickShiftGarage Ай бұрын
Every 30k miles is a good place to start. Nissan recommends something like 60k miles but that leads to more degradation to the CVT. As far as adding fluid, only add fluid if the transmission fluid level is low, you never want to overfill any transmission. You can use CVT transmission fluid that is specified for Nissans NS-2. Hope this helps thanks for watching! 👍

Yes, I stuck a slim funnel into the dipstick tube of the transmission to fill with fluid. The transmission doesn't have a cap like the engine oil does, so you just use the dipstick tube. For engine oil, there's an oil cap on top of the engine. You'll take the cap off and pour engine oil in that way, here's a video of how to change engine oil: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5hgeJSf05zMaYk.html Hope this helps, thanks for watching! 👍

Congrats on your Altima! I'd look into getting the CVT fluid and filters changed out (there are 2 filters) as soon as you can and every 48000 km (30k miles) going forward. CVTs are very sensitive to dirty fluid. Other than that, keep up with the oil changes every 4800 km (3k miles) and tire rotations every 12000 km (7.5k miles) and it should give you many trouble free miles. Thanks for watching! 😊

@@TrickShiftGarage Thanks for commenting. I have a '09 with 191k miles. No tx fluid changes and was planning on running til transmission/engine died. I just got the P1778 code (Stepper Motor). I am going to put the $150 in to fix it (part + oil) and see if it works but I didn't want to buy $100+ of oem tx fluid if its not going to work. I am OG owner and so I got my use out of it -- this was the last hurrah to try to squeeze another year or two out of it. The Castrol is like $25 for 5 qts which is $10-20 cheaper per quart than other fluids/OEM.

Genuine Nissan NS2 fluid is about $27/qt now, which absolutely ridiculous. My first two fluid replacements were done at the dealer where they replaced about 12 qts (the entire system). Now that I'm out of warranty, I'm going to do these drain and fills (along with one the paper filter and the metal strainer). However, it will be the 5-6 qt drain and fill. Genuine fluid is clear to light green tint, in color. I believe it's made by Idemitsu (CVT Type N) and is id the same color. If your Nissan uses NS3, there is another Idemitsu CVT fluid type to use. Idemitsu brand is less than half the cost of Nissan fluid. Also, Valvoline makes a synthetic CVT fluid which I believe is both NS2 and NS3 compatible. I think it's a similar clear color. Make sure you get it in the blue and not red bottles (not sure the color fluid in the red bottles). This stuff is also at least half the cost of Genuine Nissan brand.

Im sorry to hear that 😔 I'm guessing they didn't put enough (or any fluid) back into the CVT... Check the fluid level and top it off as necessary. If it's full and it still won't go into gears, you'll have to get it towed to a transmission shop or Nissan Dealership. Hope this helps, good luck! 🙂

Hi Diego! Nissan told me the same when I bought it new in 2007. I've learned over the years of ownership that these are not sealed. Nissan even gave my model year a drain plug for the CVT. The fluid should get changed on these CVTs every 60k miles. I think Nissan used that as a selling point which probably contributed to these transmissions failing a lot, everyone thought there was no maintenance required. Thanks for watching! 🙂

With the horrible reputation CVT’s have I wouldn’t ever use anything other than Nissan Brand CVT fluid. Also if your Nissan had a CVT in it and it’s got 130k plus miles on it and the fluid had never been changed..DO NOT CHANGE IT. Changing it can actually cause the transmission to fail, esp if you have 150k plus miles do not drain all the fluid and change it at one time. If you do there’s a 50/50 change you’ll shit can the transmission. They quit making those particular CVT’s for a reason lol.
