I've received this request so many times that I decided to do a video on it! This tricky little passage, and the strategies and steps to resolve it, can help a pianist in many other areas of study. I hope you find the material presented here to be helpful!

Thanks Josh - a great video! I particularly like the way you talk about being prepared to spend several weeks on something. This confirms to me what I thought I had discovered, in that we often feel we should be ‘making progress’ and so will try to push ahead without properly putting in the preparatory work.

Wow! So interesting. I was just listening to numerous pianists playing this, my very most favorite piece since I was a toddler...long story, but I’ve had a pianist play this at my wedding...both of them; and now I’m listening again, because I picked it for music at my mom’s funeral. Mom was the one that encouraged my classical piano lessons and got me interested in Classical music. My piano lessons ended after seven years, because I wasnt dedicated to practicing once I turned teenager. I so wish I had kept at it. Anyway, I was amazed that with only a short time of learning, many years ago, I could actually understand what you were talking about when explaining how to break down that credenza. I knew exactly what you were saying. Maybe this is nothing to someone who is a professional, but I found it interesting and very cool especially since it was over 45 years ago that I played my last note. 😊 thx

I played this piece couple years ago, and that last part really frustrated me since l couldn’t play it at all. I mess up the order of the notes. Instead of 3241 for Cb Bb C A, l played 4321 for C Cb Bb A when l did it fast. This video is helpful. Thank you!

I've been learning this piece for about two months now and was struggling with the cadenza. I just spent a half hour practice session trying all these exercises and by the end of it I sort of had it. Previously my hand was rotating all over the place, but this last time my hand was rock steady just playing the four notes over and over again. And I was able to speed it up to about twice the max speed I had done before. Not sure I am there completely - a few more days of practicing this little bit will make sure I have it solid.

I'm so glad that you made a video just for that cadenza part. I have learned the whole piece but got stuck at that point. I hate to think that I don't actually have the technique to play this piece and have to give up (can play the whole piece but not the cadenza at the coda, duh!). I will keep polishing those 4 notes slow and clear and work my speed up. Thank you Josh.

Just play it with both hands if that's easier. No need to play it with one hand only because someone once said so and had it printed in a score. Also don"t count, just play as many as you like. I just heard a Rubinstein recording where he added a couple of beats (groups of four 16th notes). These passages with embellishments, rubatos etc. are composed in an improvisational style, and improvising yourself will do the piece justice, as long as you are competent and have something to contribute.
@aaronrosenberg66335 жыл бұрын
Great video - thanks. You spoke about the crescendo-decresendo, but what's your thought about the accelerando-rallentando? I've heard so many different interpretations of this. I suppose that, being a cadenza of sorts, it's open to some interpretation.

I'm playing this piece and I'm a beginner, so far in two days I'm about 27 seconds in, and I'm able to play it in a fast pace as well, but the thing is you can hear no emotion, it's very robotic in a way but I'm pretty sure it's because I'm playing on a keyboard.
@Thiago-px9ev3 жыл бұрын
You shouldnt start with pieces like that. Seriously, coming from a very stubborn student: you will NOT play this well, because 1: you're still a beginner and 2: you're on a keyboard. Taking the right tempo doesnt mean nothing cause this piece isnt tricky with speed. The point is: you must start from the bottom if you wanna make it good. Trust me! Now it may seem very tempting to take a step bigger than the leg but believe me, its worst. Our body doesnt work like this, you have to practice simply works, some Bach pieces, some easy Chopin preludes, some easy classical pieces to prepare yourself, to prepare your body. Im not trying to be rude cause I learned it the worst way and nobody told me this. If you have 0 ambition to become a good pianist thats fine too, you can try to play anything you like. But if you wanna grow, you must start from the bottom, otherwise you'll just wait your time!

Can you do the trills part on the nocturne in e minor, I know how to play the whole piece but I just need some help with the dynamics and the finger it, I especially need help on the long trill of where they play a G and a C sharp and then a D and C sharp, I need help with fingering on those trills because in the D and C sharp trill I use 3 4 but that feels so uncomfortable and the trill comes out weak, can you suggest any other fingering, I would ask my teacher but I don't see her for 2 weeks
@thegreenpianist76836 жыл бұрын
Ethan Miller you mean B C sharp right? The fingering I use is 1 and 3 for B and C sharp trill then cross to 2 for B flat then used 2 3 for C sharp D trill and 1 for those held notes then you can use the 123 chromatic scale fingering (I found rotating slightly and rocking the hand back and forth for the first trill and raising the wrist slightly for the second trill helps) And for the dynamics, they are personal, for me, i think the left hand contermelody is more important and try to begin soft and then crescendo to the low B in the left and keep the trills nice and healthy in the right hand (not too loud) and you can crescendo to the high B after the chromatic scale. You can see my latest video on this nocturne if you want a clarification (and I hope you like it) I hope that helps :)
