***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I converted a room in my basement into a grow room like this. We grow lettuce and bok choy year round for family use. The room is also used for seed-starting, but will be perfect for growing inside when the USDA tells us we can’t have backyard gardens. Your weight loss is showing - congrats.

As a Minnesotan, I'm so jealous of your longer growing season. I bet you still remember and don't miss that short growing season when you lived in Wisconsin. The thought of all those cherry tomatoes has me dreaming about making sundried tomatoes in the oven. Who knew that it was so easy to slice them in half, toss with salt, pepper and olive oil, then oven roast to perfection! They freeze nice in Ziplocks, the oil makes it easy to separate them and pull out what I need. I eat them fresh like candy! See, I can't stop talking about them! I love your Sprout House; it's such a great set up. I'm older with back issues, I'd probably put that seed starting mix bucket on a cart. You are getting a better workout getting extra squats in. Happy Growing! 💜

We order from MI Gardner as well,to Canada.Wanted to share that the Golden Nugget Tomato is quite the amazing and prolific grower. Hard to keep up with them but so very worth it. I don't get heartburn from them at all,the skin is nice and thin and the flavor is unique. Give it plenty of space as the last 2 years of growing them, they quickly outgrew their space and had to be 4 feet wide all around not to mention all the branches loaded with tomatoes dangling over the edges of the raised beds. I thought it was huge for a determinate. Enjoy! 😊

Planting day, so exciting! Back when we could garden, we had a kit for starting seeds, and it helped a lot. Some of our seeds were from saving seeds from last year's plants, some from the seed-savers' group, and some we bought. One of these days we'll settle down again, and intend to do even more gardening than in the past. The "something new" was usually part of our gardening each year. One year, we tried a dozen or more varieties of tomatoes we hadn't tried before, another year it was chili peppers, etc. We'd learn what varieties we liked, what did best in our area, etc and that would help us with what we grew in future years. When we were in northern AL, we had the multiple growing seasons per year like that. Our tomatoes would stop producing in the heat of summer, but kept growing well, so we let them build strength, and when it started cooling off enough at night again for them to set fruit, they were even more productive than in the early season.

Exciting new season ! It is always fun to try new vegetables. A snacking garden is the name of the game which makes it extra fun to be outside and pick treats off the vine for ourselves and our garden dog Jack who loves mild peppers, carrots , broccoli, peas, turnips and radishes as well as mustard greens. Yay for herbs !! We are going to grow the most herbs and vegetables ever this year in our small-yard home garden.

As a companion (not competition!) to Sarah's cheat sheet, I'd suggest going to Next Level Gardening's website. He has his own partly fillable spreadsheet that is slightly different. You can enter your zip code and it will automatically tell you actual dates for starting seeds as well as transplanting. It doesn't have Sarah's info such as heat mat or not, but it sure saves me time counting on a calendar!

Why not use a small (maybe 5'x5') piece of weed fabric that you put on the floor while filling the trays. After you just pick it up and throw the excess back in the tub and fold it and rest it in there as well. Easy clean up as well as allows you to be comfortable in filling the trays without worrying at all about the mess.

All those cherry type tomatoes look like a lot of fun! I grew Jersey Devil for the '22 season and '23 season. I found the Jersey Devil to be quite slow to germinate and slow to start producing. Once it got going it did pretty well but here in NE Texas the extra hot and humid summer can start up in a quick hurry. I think you should have better luck with it in the greenhouse setting. It does have a very good flavor IMHO. So I'm sticking to Opalka, Amish Paste and Blue Beech as those have produced well for me for some years now. I'm trying Hungarian Heart for the first time as it is supposed to be a good paste or cooking tomato and tolerant of this here climate. We'll see. I need to beef up the paste tomato harvest this year as I'm getting low on the various canned tomato stuff in the pantry 🙂My favorite orange or yellow tomato is Nebraska Wedding. My hubs asks for it every year (for over 30 years now) and as it is a determinate I can grow it for Spring and for Fall garden here in my area. Hope you guys have an excellent tomato year! It will be fun to see how all those cherry tomatoes turn out.

I have a simplistic method to seed planting. First, I’m going to ask a question. You really need to seriously think about this. When a seed falls from the mother plant, how deep does she plant the seed? Mother nature only buries it with a light layer of leaves and debris that the wind blows around. If you can do that you can grow a seed. I put my seed right on top of the soil and cover it with a thin layer of vermiculite. Just like mother nature would do. And I have great success every single year. It’s the method I’ve been doing since I watched the Back to Eden movie with Paul Gauci. It is the most simplistic. Enjoy your garden season.

I think you’re really gonna love the jersey devil variety. I planted Amish paste for the last couple years and tried the jersey devils two years ago. Even from seed I could tell they were going to do very well. I planted four plants of the jersey devils and just two of the Amish paste because I get twice as much from the jersey. Devils. I love having the flavor along with the Amish paste. It’s a great seed you’re really gonna like it. i’m in middle Tennessee and most of the tomatoes are done in September those jersey devils went straight into October and kept producing. I really enjoyed the flavor even raw cut up in our salsas. I can’t wait to see how yours turned out and how you like them

This maybe a stupid question. But do you think ammonia from our rabbit would kill our seedlings. We're just building our homestead and haven't had time to build a "coop/shed" for feed storage/ chicken brooder/ rabbit home/ and chicken coop. So currently she is in my shed that we currently have my washer/dryer, freezer, and extra fridge in. We don't have room in our home to start seeds, this is our only option until we build a greenhouse. I have purchased a cheap harbor freight one to harden them off once we get to that point. Also our dryer is propane, but we obviously don't run it all the time, and although it's vented outside I usually open the doors when I'm doing laundry to air out the bunny smell before I start🙄

I grew one plant of habanada peppers last summer here in SE PA. I got almost 100 peppers from that one plant. They were beautiful deep orange. I know habanadas are a result of hybridizing, so perhaps my single plant wasn't typical of all habanadas, but we were very disappointed with the flavor. They were fully ripened, but very bland.

😂 You’ll be picking your currant tomatoes by the thousands. They’re aptly named and sweet. My grandkids love them.
