Trier (German: Trier, Latin: Augusta Treverorum, Palatinate: Trija, French: Trèves, Luxembourg: Tréier) is a German city in the west of Rhineland-Palatinate, near the border with Luxembourg; the oldest city in Germany. Founded in 16 BC. e. by the Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus next to the sanctuary of the Treveri tribe, from where the name of the city came - “Augusta Treverorum”. The city's key historical monuments are a World Heritage Site and are protected by UNESCO.
