Comparing the first episodes of the original and new adaptations of Trigun. I had some mixed feelings on the subject and in this video, I'll tell you why.

To all of the people who are gonna comment about the rock thing, hear me out. First, I'd like to debunk the incorrect explanations I have received. The explanation is not that at first he thought he had multiple bullets and changed his plan once he knew he had only one. That is not the case because the second time he went to shoot the missiles in the sky, he knew he had one bullet and didn't grab the rock. To people saying that he was intentionally baiting the other gunman by pretending to take aim at the missiles during that moment, there is literally no positive evidence that suggests that. For the people who gave me the explanation that makes the most sense, which is he changed his plan based on the proximity of the missiles to the town, this is still a failing of the show because the show failed at conveying that to the audience properly. And no, this is not an example of visual storytelling. There's a difference between subtle visual storytelling and something that's not there. He changed his plan at the last second, but in a way that wasn't telegraphed that well to the audience. There are so many people telling me that he changed his plan because the missiles are closer by the time he grabs that rock, but not that much time had even passed between the moment where Vash rose his gun the second time and was interrupted by the other gunman and the moment he ran to get the rock. The missiles shouldn't be that much closer than when he was just gonna shoot normally. And if you want to talk about visual storytelling then look at the missiles in the sky. They do not look like they're that close to the town so what's the problem with him just doing what he was going to do from the beginning? They tried to convey him changing his plan in the middle of that incredibly fast action scene with all of those dynamic camera angles in order to make that scene look like a spectacle and to their credit they did a fantastic job of that, but in the process, they were unable to convey what Vash was thinking properly. I don't need Vash to have an inner monologue about it, but there are a number of ways to show that visually. Maybe have him react in a different way to the situation at the end as opposed to the beginning or when he was going to shoot the second time, have him grab the rock first and then have the gunman shoot the rock. If they had done that, there would be a justification for him to grab that rock even if you would have to rewatch to make sure. As the scene is now, the audience can only speculate and not confirm why Vash did what he did.

You are right about that rock thing, the 2nd time he took the aim didn't make sense because he knew he didn't had enough bullets. Even if he was hoping that the shrapnels from first explosion can trigger a chain reaction, that's just being a bit too optimistic and while I am here, I should add this bit as well. The part where you said he could have used the gun his opponent dropped, no he can't because there isn't a proof that he knows how to handle a gun other than his own in Stampede and you may not notice this but both guns don't use same caliber bullets. Vash did say he need .22 rounds and the gun his opponent used looked like it used .45 ACP or something.

Best they could've done would've been give him two bullets, so either he could fail the first time and then switch to the rock plan or having him formulate a two step plan involving both bullets, have it being foiled by the guard shooting his gun and have him switch to the rock approach explaining that it's more risky but can be pulled off in one shot. however, I think what the creators intended to happen was the "missiles too close scenarios, only that since they showed them falling so slow to give time for the scene to play out it's hard to believe they've gotten that closer in the four seconds it took Vash to deal with his opponent. in this case, they could've kept the scene as it is and shown the bombs accelerate by turning on some thruster or some shit (we have real bombs that can do that, so it's not unrealistic even by irl standards) giving him a reason to speed up the plan

The worst part of the cg is the clothes, they did far too little work on their visuals, and they don't have any appropriate flex and cloth physics, so they look and act like some weird ass pipes instead of actual clothing. The shot composition also kind of sucks, as does the lighting sometimes because they don't fully render the environment but draw backgrounds instead, which is fine, but they don't do the work to match the lights... All in all the faces look good, maybe too much blush, the fave and movement animations are nice too, but it really still doesn't work because the directing really sucks, both in terms of shot composition, angle, how long the shots linger, when and if to use slomo, and lastly and most importantly, in terms of writing and story telling. I absolutely don't recognize this show, don't feel the stakes or any attachment, don't feel the weight or importance of anything. It's also extremely lacking in cool factor and characterization. Where the hell is the goofy, sneaky, extremely agile and mysterious mc from the original? You know, the one that got shot by a room full of assault rifles and lived, with the area around him unaffected? The one with cool trick shots? The one that could actually do anything aside run back and fourth? He isn't goofing around at all either

Stampede is a third telling of the story, its an adaptation not claiming to be the same the others and its fine to not be fine with that along with not enjoying cgi but Studio Orange is killer with cgi and it sounds like youre talking out of your ass for the first half of your comment tbh. Studio Orange hits it out of the park especially with the small details like not using the traditional method for lip flaps and animating the full motions for more sound, Ive used them as a reference for their work on Houseki No Kuni multiple times. I really dont know what you mean by the directing is bad or that they dont fully render the environment. Could you give me an example of the environment not being rendered? Lastly, please use paragraphs, but it is interesting to read other takes of this adaptation. Its on par for me personally with the original until the original stopped following the manga once it wasn’t finished.

My biggest problems with the new Trigun is that there's no secrecy to anything. Vash's old tech arm was hidden and his poster gave this illusion that he really could be the dangerous criminal worthy of such a bounty, a couple of things the anime took away within a few minutes of the first episode BEFORE we even met the characters. Too cut and dry compared to the masterful writing and the direction of the original where you had to watch the whole episode to see what happens in a suspenseful/light-hearted (At least for the most part) kinda way where you can sympathize with the other characters as to how exactly, this happy go lucky goofball got such a high bounty on his head instead of serving it on a silver platter like this one does.

Originally I thought Stampede was going to be a prequel that showed how Vash earned his reputation as the Humanoid Typhoon , that said though I'm fine with Stampede having it's own continuity rather then it being part of the original series that way it gives the anime team the freedom to do what they want, though hopefully it sticks the landing when the the final episode comes out. As someone who *has* read the manga, the characterizations in the original anime are far more accurate to the source material. Stampede is further removed from the manga than the anime original episodes in the first series. Also, while you covered a lot of the issues I have with episode 1, here's a few more: 1) Rem dies for no reason. The original makes it very clear that her intention to stay on the ship was to keep the crash from happening and save as many lives as possible. While she failed to stop the crash entirely, she *did* alter it enough to save a significant portion of all the people inside, making her sacrifice mean something. In Stampede she doesn't do that, she basically just pushes the eject button for the escape pod and immediately dies. This means either Knives didn't calculate the crash well enough to kill everyone (Which is fairly out of character and makes him less intimidating) or Rem had already diverted the course (Meaning she could've hopped on the escape pod). I'm pretty sure that the show was going for a "Someone has to stay behind to release the escape" moment but A)They don't make that clear B)That's a stupid way to design escape pods and C)Knives offered for her to join them and there's no way he would've done that if it would've prevented their escape. So there is no reason for her to die here other than "The plot says so". If they really wanted to make it different they could've had her join them then die on the planet over something that could've been prevented by using a Plant. It reinforces Vash's sentiment that the use of Plants is unfortunate but necessary, and reinforcing Knives' sentiment humans are parasitic and can't survive on their own merits. 2) Vash oscillates between helpless and master escape artist. Like his competency in a fight, it looks like his competency in untying ropes is purely determined by comedic effect. They find him tied up in the desert, and he genuinely needs help getting himself out of it. How did he get there? Why didn't the people who did it just bring him in for the bounty? It's never brought up again but apparently some faceless band of desert bandits thoroughly beat him. Potentially it's there to show his inexperience, but as you said before that doesn't work with his occasional competency. Later in the same episode he unties himself easily for no apparent reason other than being a funny joke. 3) They spoon feed explanations. I don't mind the faster pace, but there's literally a point where Meryl is asked if she knows what a plant is (Literally everyone on this planet should know) and she literally gives a textbook definition of what Plants are. Very little understanding of "show don't tell". I also have an issue that the art style went from Scifi/steampunk/western to generic scifi. The Plants have zero flare and people going around demanding a duel just feels off when one participant is wearing a trenchcoat length hoodie and the other is wearing generic-space-officer-suit TM. It's not really relevant to how good the story is, but it shows an underlying problem with the series stripping away more unique or nuanced elements of the story in favor of leaning into tropes (Think switching out Mille for Roberto).

I'm glad you mentioned the change of "style." I thought the original Trigun anime did a better job of balancing the western/steampunk and sci fi setting - which arguably is a hard thing to do. Trigun Stampede is mostly sci fi, with some western elements, like the pub and wardrobe of some background characters but you barely notice it. Its been completely relegated to the background and none of these western elements are integrated in the design of the main characters. The main characters all look too modernized, if you tossed them into our world no one would bat an eye. I'd say the worse for me is the redesign of the plants to look like actual plants. It takes away their angelic, ethereal quality with a dash of body horror that mesmerized and terrified me so much.

@@vasheroo In the original Trigun anime, Rem's last parting words were to Vash and it was "take care of Knives." She was concerned for Knives, she knew the death of Tesla had a greater effect on him and she wanted Vash to take care of his twin brother the best he could. But in Trigun Stampede, she just tells them that "I love you both very much." It just doesn't hit as hard.

For the rock shot the initial stance he takes and the number of times he clicks his gun makes me believe that he was going to take the cluster out in chunks before realizing he doesn’t have any ammo. After getting the bullet and fighting off the bounty Hunter he ratakes his stance, realizes that the bombs are far too spread out for a single bullet only to cover the issue, and repositions into a spot where he can throw the rock at a good enough angle that the shotgun spread will cause proper chain explosions. The reason the scene doesn’t take with a lot of us old gunners is that Old Vash would have made all these calculations before he even finished loading in the bullet. Also I don’t really see him not picking up the bounty hunters gun as an issue because even old vash was extremely reluctant to pick up let alone use anyone else’s gun. Vash’s gun is a finely honed and extremely accurate piece of hardware. Using anyone else’s gun risks him not being able to hit his shots. Which is a big no no for Vash, for whom inaccuracy is paramount to sacrilege.

I am SO glad that you specifically harp on the bomb scene. That was when I definitively decided that I did not like the new portrayal, because it makes Vash look like he's not taking life-or-death matters seriously. Vash is only goofy and ridiculous when it's solely his own life on the line. The immediate possibility of someone else's death made the 90s Vash immediately eerily competent and that was part of what I loved. I love the idea of a man so willing to believe in humanity, so oozing with compassion for others, that he becomes a monstrously dangerous force of nature. That is something rarely ever framed as a good thing. I've never seen another show which does not paint the switch between the kind mask and the monstrous mask as a good thing with the same kind of delicate hand. A man who so believes in love and peace that he is capable of great violence to attain those ends _is_ a good thing. That's why Captain America and Superman were originally written how they were. They were saviors.

you criticize Vash's "inexperienced" actions regarding the duel with the JMP commander, him running out of ammo... ~I'd like to point out that the scene from original Ep 1... Vash was ready to shoot to defend himself yes... but he was also admittedly clumsy enough to forget he needed ammo--- he'd had to resort to ambushing one of the gang members to steal their bullets--- *ALSO* Stampede does allude to the joke Vash makes later in the original series about how he can eat tons of food for what a single bullet costs---

That bullet scene drove me crazy in the new one, and you did a great job explaining what I could never quite put into words. Stampede feels like it only understands the characters and story on a surface level, and the writing in some of these events feels very by-the-numbers, like they're checking off a box of what needs to happen for it to look like Trigun.

The team making this said they're taking inspiration from how the MCU adapts comics, expect tons of jokes at the expense of characterization, and for style over substance such as the scene where he was going to shoot the cluster bombs gets into a small fight then immediately does something else to deal with the problem thus showing the original intent of firing upwards was a useless scene only played out for style.

Its also incredibly fast paced, just one action scene falling into the next action scene, without anytime to take a breath. The original Trigun anime took the time (sometimes too much time) to develop the world and its characters. Trigun Stampede feels like it was made for people with short attention spans. However, I don't hate the new adaption, I appreciate what they've done with Knives -- making him less like the cackling villain he was in the original anime, giving him more of a visual presence, having him possess a cool knife-like ability (true to his name) instead of just wielding guns, and giving him a proper birth name like Nai with his alternative name "Knives" being a name humans call him sort of like how Vash is referred to as the "Humanoid Typhoid."

I never got into Trigun so I don't really have a horse in this race, but as someone who is neck deep in Fullmetal Alchemist opinions and staunchly believes that (independent of accuracy to source material) the 2003 adaptation is better on its own merits than Brotherhood, I appreciate the critical stance you take while still admitting the new Trigun might be a good story on its own merits. 👍

I'm so in love with this adaptation, and even if I had watched the old one before, I would see it as a separate piece, because you can't compare things that were made in different time periods, studios, and animation styles, they HAD TO rebrand the story and characters, because then it would be a remaster instead of a readaptation. I'm more into this anime generation, I like only a few old school animes for various reason, so I feel like this version is more of my style. I've been trying so hard to separate it from the original but it's been so difficult. the mischaracterization of Vash is so tragic. In the original, his incompetence is revealed over time to have been an act he puts on in order to maintain a lower profile. Sure he's silly but the impression he gives off is that he's constantly aware of the lives at stake if he doesn't act. However, in Stampede he's made out to be a timid pacifist who's capable but unwilling to engage with conflict. It just feels like a bit of a betrayal to the original character. btw the new series is in no way a faithful portrayal of the manga. as a modern action anime it checks off all the boxes to be successful, though: -tragic backstory revealed before the opening credits -main villain revealed in the first episode -protagonist gets to show off at the end -naive young side-character paired with a seasoned veteran of the trade

Another problem was the caliber of bullets that Vash requested. They were simply wrong. OG Vash uses a .45 long colt which fires bullets that actually would have been able to pull of the stunts he did in the episode. .22 caliber on the other hand would have been like throwing a pebble at the rock he fired at. To me this seems a bit disrespectful to the source material almost like they didn't even bother looking into the fine details of his character and his equipment. His arm for example and red coat are hiding dark secrets to his traumatic past. Now his scars (well his arm at least is just out in the open and now he won't be able to hide another gun with it too since it's clear that a mechanical arm could be dangerous. Still I hope that this original story turns out to be good I'm the end. I really would like for them to make good money so that they can give Trigun the FMA Brotherhood treatment. The Manga where things get much darker and Vash REALLY has to go all out to where even he seems like a monster would be incredible to see animated

In the remake, the feats that he performs and superhuman shots (like in the first episode) break the suspension of disbelief completely. I have a feeling it's about the caliber of the bullet. Probably the gendarme's bullets were of a different caliber, insufficient for what Vash wanted to do. Further, it can only be theorized, initially he may have thought that he had a full magazine and with that he would be able to disable a cluster bomb. Later, when he had a bullet, he could aim it specifically to provoke the gendarme, although it was stupid to me. Why would a man who probably had a full magazine run up to his opponent within a meter? In conclusion, on the first shot attempt, Vash assumed he had a full magazine. During the second shot attempt, he deliberately (which is quite likely) provoked the gendarme. And the third attempt to shoot, when he knew he had only one bullet, he chose the most effective solution. I haven't watched the previous adaptations, just this one. I personally like it, CGI too, but I understand the fans' dissatisfaction. The above is just my humble opinion, not attacking anyone ^^ Have fun watching this anime everyone!

people are so ungrateful for stampede just because vash isn’t as goofy as he is in the original doesn’t mean he’s gonna be an automatically bad character. the anime just came out and the fact that it gets a remake that’s completely cgi even if it flopped in japan is a miracle. both are good in good ways, everyone gets amazing re designs and the writers are definitely focusing on vashs depression in the remake , it’s just a retelling of the story. please be more grateful. the only truly bad thing is the lack of milly and being replaced by roberto. give the writers and animators time to make new episodes!!

They just trauma dumped us and vash feels so hollow with his beliefs. I don’t mind a younger naive vash. This just doesn’t feel like vash. I mean he wouldn’t leave a kid waiting for years like he did in this one. Vash seems very apathetic and lets harm fall upon others more. Him crying isn’t gonna make me like him more.

I have a guess about the rock thing. The cluster bombs get farther away from each other as they descend, so enough time had passed at that point, that he felt they were no longer close enough to each other for just the bullet to handle the situation. So he used to rock to cause a ricochet. I agree, this could've been visually conveyed better, but personally, when I initially watched the scene, that's the first thing I thought when he grabbed the rock.

after the last tristamp episode last night and reading all the comments here again, dare i say my respect for studio orange literally skyrocketed. their choice of how to tell their story in another light was risky knowing so many people grew up and loved trigun so much, all the choices they made for tristamp made so much sense after ep12, i personally thought the '23 trigun was all over the place compared to the '98 one but in narratively, its starting to be more cohesive. while all the comments here are valid, yall really just needed to wait for tristamp to finish airing bc tristamp vash on ep12 just made a fool of us

Easy way to fix the rock thing is to show a missile with a large lead in the first attempt, but at the second attempt the missile is barely ahead, and when he raises his gun a third time, not only did the lead missile lose the lead but the missiles moved/ changed their angle so as a solution he gets to a new spot and throws a rock that would act like the lead missile was supposed to. Also when he was looking for a bullet, it probably would've been better if he had gone from a calm mind to a panic by first shooting the gun multiple times, then checking the chambers, then checking the pockets slowly getting more frantic, and finally turning around and yelling for a .22. And for his opponents gun, the simplest of all solutions exist. Show it falling off the cliff side.

It’s not as good as the original, but the original is one of the top 3 anime ever made. It’s very difficult for 3D animation to match the feel and heart to frame by frame hand drawn, but this one does, and does well, and it deserves accolades for that alone. The expansion on “plant” lore I didn’t like, but it still has the same “predator and prey” dynamic that made the original’s story so moving. I absolutely hate vash’s design, but I wanted him to remain unchanged. In the new one, him being an idiot feels forced, whereas the old one made him an aloof box of adorable, this one feels like he uses his stupid to hide the fact that he’s OP. The new gun isn’t much to look at either. It’s definitely worth a watch, but it’s not the masterpiece that the original was.

Why change his caliber of bullet? Why nerf him? Why make him seem less intelligent(he seemed intelligent with how he got out of situations in the original ie the straw and the "use the latrine" tactic)?

I can't wait to hear ur thoughts on episodes 2 and 3. I feel like they are rushing a bunch of element's tht made the original pretty good. Already we know knives is in the background so wat will the big twist or big bad be at the end? And the way the first episode played I thought for sure this was earlier in his career as a gunman rather than the same person. I think it is cuz but a bunch of characters and dialog suggest it's the same. Also i miss the spiked hair and old gun. This gun is easy too chunky if you ask me

The old anime was adapted when the manga is ongoing so it never adapted the whole story. The manga went into darker places than the old anime. This new anime js a retelling of the manga knowing the whole story behind it and a lot more closer in tone with the manga than the old anime even with the changes.

I think he was aware that the guy might shoot his weapon to prevent him from shooting like he did with the bullet. So he basically bluffed the guy took him out and then went on with his original plan. Either that or maybe while he was getting ready to shoot he realized he wouldn’t be able to what he wanted to with just a bullet. Although to be honest my first time watching that clip I was confused about the plan change as well. Also after watching the trailer where he says he’ll never kill again, I think that’s why he tried to talk the guy out of a duel.

Im a newbie to trigun in general, but i watched a couple eps of the new version and them episode 1 of the old one. And the characters are unbelievably much less compelling in the new one. I found Vash to be annoying in his timidness, cause, as you stated, he CLEARLY shouldve gotten his survival skills from somewhere, and it wasnt by avoiding conflict at all costs, clearly in some situations he has to face them, as is evident in the very first scene in the old trigun where he WAS ready to shoot. And same criticism goes for the reporters verus the two girls in the old trigun. The lady and the old guy are very tropy, which isnt annoying, but it isnt that interesting right away. But Millie and Myrel are just cuter and more interesting already. And i gleamed that from a episode, and thats just cause theyre immediately more comical. Also one last thing... i think the comedy i saw in episode 1 of old trigun just isnt all that present in the new trigun. Like, its pretty clear the situation around Vash is ridiculous both in the new and old version, yet the way its treated is so differnt and ultimately, i think the new one just handles it much worse. So idk maybe past a couple more episodes the new trigun WOULD be good, but right now, im not really taken in.

Character designs, changed/original content, the whole vibe just feels off. Personally the manga will always reign supreme with the 98 anime being a cult classic. Just disappointed they decided to go anime original/reimagining a second time, at least the 98 anime had an excuse with no manga content to cover but not adapting maximum makes no sense to me

I'm digging it so far, my biggest gripe is they sort of toned down the goofy idiot persona of Vash. So far he's sort of just been a pacifist until forced to act and even then its almost always at the last second. I agree that they're emphasizing one side of his personality too much. I still have hope the later episodes will improve the show, I have my faith in Studio Orange but on the bright side at least the show isn't egregiously bad.

I just watched the new Trigun two days ago, then yesterday I watched the original for the first time It was a backwards way of doing it but honestly I loved them both, I am actually hyped - and Orange's cgi is actually mind-blowing Although I do miss milly as a character so I hope they bring her back There is one thing that bothers me so far, and that's his glasses? After watching the original he puts on his glasses whenever things get serious or he wants to hide his face with a fake smile- not sure if that's its meaning but it would have been nice to see

Little note for you, buddy. You can do a first impression any time you want. It's not a mandatory thing for you to watch three episodes of a show before making a video on it. There are plenty of people who just talk about one episode after watching it. And yeah, chapter reviews exist. So do episode reviews. Don't know how you didn't know that, but... now you do I guess?

I actually liked the new characterization of Meryl since it add more nuance when she eventually grows into the slightly more mature version of the 1998 anime. But regarding Vash and De Niro I agree 100% De Niro feels so heavy handed and I miss Milly. The duel is interesting. I am with you that goofiness was very exaggerated but I will say that with context of Episode 3, I somewhat see the potential intent of this scene of Episode 1 (spoilers for Episode 3 after this sentence). The color profile when Knives does his attack almost framed exactly like the July solider but where Vash’s ridiculous method worked, it is completely and utterly useless when Knives does it. It does change the dynamic between Vash and Knives but has good parallels the Episode 1 moment where it was goofy and thankfully no one was hurt to while the Episode 3 moment negates every bit of Vash’s good intentions. Now this doesn’t invalidate anything you said about the structure of the shot in Episode 1 though it isn’t choreographed well with his inexperience.
