Trimming A T5 Transmission In A 1932 Ford Roadster

UPDATE: The wishbone ball cap goes under the crossmember, not sandwich it. Oops!
I don’t know how and I don’t know why but the engine in my 1932 Ford Roadster is 3/4” too far forward compared to the original 1932 motor mount brackets. I’ve ran through every possibility of what is making this happen, and I’ve determined that is just is what it is. Nothing a little trimming to the tranny won’t fix!

I see a number of people have suggested lubrication on the burr in your die grinder. WD40 usually helps when cutting aluminum, but the real key is having a sharp edged tool. Carbide burrs should be cheap enough for you to buy a new set, then retire the old ones to be used with other materials... Good luck with your build!

You can also trim the top of the wishbone. You might also raise the transmission with a few washers. I would do both, because , as mentioned here the suspension moves up some with its normal travel.

You have the wishbone cup assembly upside-down and sandwiched between the K-member. That's not how it goes. The whole cup assembly goes on the bottom of the K-member. You'll find there is plenty of wishbone clearance then.

GEE WHIZ. 3,580 subs in 2 months with 8 vids and nearly 1/2 a million views are unheard of. Congrats even though I'm a little jealous. After being on YT ten years I can't compete. I like watching women doing men stuff. I watched and liked all 8 vids. Plus, I had to sub you.

I would think you could take most of the webbing off smooth before it will get into the case. You could pull the drain plug and look inside to get an idea of how thick the case is. Just a thought. Lookin forward to more updates.

2:10 please wear a face shield too. Those burrs can come from everywhere ! I use a little cutting oil on the cutting burr to reduce flying shavings.

For the die grinder with aluminum you can use bar soap to help keep it clean from buildup

Sucks you can't flip trailing bar upside down , not sure if it's camera angle or what but it look like the end has a downward curve..

If you watch the part when you are in place with it it kinda looks like it but it might wear on the cups too if you did. Just wanted to put it out there. Worth a try at the least. I've never worked on anything From this era.

Automatic transmission fluid is the best lube if you aren’t using an aluminum rated burr or not when cutting aluminum. It also works very well when using a hacksaw to cut small pieces in scrap billet aluminum.

Use bees wax on your deburring tool. It won’t build up with Aluminum. You can even use a candle. You can do the same with flapper wheels and sanding pads.

Great work, Carly. May I recommend ear protection. 40 years of using high speed air tools like your die grinder have left me with a constant high pitched scream in my ears.

Another old guy with tinnitus & severe high frequency hearing loss from exposure to noise. Can confirm not fun. Hearing loss is *cumulative* & irreversible. Carly, maybe by the time you're our age medical science will have a cure. But protecting your hearing now is so much better. 3M Peltor makes very good muffs with amplification & instant damping of loud noises so you ain't isolated wearing 'em. Some models even have Bluetooth - you can listen to music with 'em on. Your ears will thank you. And DO wear a mask when grinding. Metal dust is no bueno for your lungs.

Hit those carbide burrs with wd40 before aluminum and it helps them from clogging. Good luck on the rest of this project! Ill be watching

Can you space the wishbone down a fraction? Digging the videos. Second the wax on your burr grinder. It’s a power move. I’m with you, the webbing it’s there to reinforce the casting. Take some, no prob, take all…. Play it safe, like you are.

Shim the trans mount pushing the trans up, a 1/4 inch would probably do it on the trans mount. You could also elongate the motor mounts if you liked the placement of the motor and didn’t want to push the motor back or offset the rubber mounts on the frame. The last thing I’d do is shave the strengthening ribs on the transmission.
@billcampana4328

You could also drop the wishbone some adding caster to the equation, which is not a bad thing.

Ever seen a woman with her scalp pulled off? It will send shivers throughout your body. Do not work around power tools of any size without all that hair in a net. You have to be anal about this rule or eventually, when you become more at ease & comfy around the shop...YOU WILL GET GOT! Just a word to the wise...charlie
