Hi I’m a farrier from the U.K. Today I will be trimming a Shetland pony with extremely long hooves. This pony is under sedation as I am working and was given plenty of rest time between each hoof. We are now putting him under a trimming plan so his feet will get better each time.
Don’t forget to like and subscribe to my channel as I upload horse shoeing and trimming videos on a regular basis.
Hope you have a great day and I’ll see you on the next video 🤙

All that bruising in the lamina...I'm sure the poor pony had a tremendous amount of relief from this trim, although it may be sore for a while it's on the right way finally! Great work!

I know nothing about horses, but find these hoof maintenance and repair videos fascinating. It looks like there is blood inside the deeper part of the hoof. Do hooves have an equivalent to a “quick” like dog nails have which extend out when the nails get longer, and is this what is bleeding, and does it cause the horse pain when it is cut like this?
@miamyos
@miamyos 3 ай бұрын
@@tokyotessie The horse has it's foot inside the hoof horn and the hoof wall grows down attached to the outside of the hoof by the lamina. That's basically like the nails on a human. Under the hoof grows the sole and frog, the frog being the triangular shape on the underside of the hoof. These are like the sole of a shoe and are there to protect and cushion the foot. The inner foot contains the pedal bone and rhe hoof joint. The pedal bone usually lies with the front part parallel to the direction of the front hoof wall if you look at an x-ray from the side, but the position of the pedal bone can be compromised by different problems like founder or laminitis. Founder is caused by food being too high in sugars leading to an inflammation in the connective tissues of the hoof. The lamina that holds the hoof wall and the inner foot attached soften and become damaged and that can cause the pedal bone to detach from the hoof wall and thart to rotate. If not treated on time it can become so bad that the tip of the pedal bone goes through the sole. The pedal bone and foot are basically suspended inside the hoof walls (hoof capsule) and when the suspension fails the consequenses are dire. Not trimming the hoof regularly or correctly can lead to a similar thing, called laminitis which is like founder but caused by tears in the laminae because the hoof wall is too long so the impalance causes it to pull too hard on the lamina. The red spots you see in the video is bruising in the lamina, the tissue that the hoof is suspended inside the hoof wall by. It's caused by mechanical stress on the hoof structures because the hoof has been allowed to grow too long. Sometimes there can be a combination of mechanical stress and founder (inflammation in the foot) but I don't really see any obvious signs of founder. The hooves are full of blood vessels and the inner mechanics are said to work like 4 extra hearts, pumping blood back to the heart with every step. If the horse gets tears in the lamina there is often bruising. There can be bruising in the sole and frog too, sometimes because of something simple like stepping on a sharp rock and sometimes because of other issues like a thin sole that can't protect the hoof very well or an incorrectly trimmed hoof with high spots. I'm not an expert but I've watched enough videos that I've learned this much and I agree, it's very interesting to look at!

I think the video clips are out of order? You are shown sawing the right forehoof. And then trimming the left forehoof. And then sawing the left forehoof. And then trimming the right forehoof. And then back to trimming the left forehoof. I got a bit confused with it! Very interesting video, though.😊

It must break your heart when you come across cases like this. Especially, as there is no need for it. I know we don't know the circumstances of the owner but am really glad that there is a programme in place for hoof trimming in the future. It does beg the question about this little chap's other needs, like general healthcare, worming etc. Is he in the right care now?

That poor pony should never have had his feet like that in the first place. For the sake of a trim it’s suffered :( it’s obvious it’s had laminitis in the passed too. just a quick question… would him having his feet like this for so long cause any other lasting damage ie joints etc. Great video to see the difference. Hopefully he feels better soon . Thanks for the upload :)

What is all the redness is that bruising I know it's not blood. And does that redness mean pain or is it just old bruising
@InnocentGuillotine
@InnocentGuillotine Ай бұрын
It's mostly old bruising/injuries, and none of the ones I saw in the video are likely to have been from sensitive tissue-like a quick in a dog or cat's nails, cutting into the actually sensitive tissue of a horse hoof usually causes a lot of bleeding.

If this is a rescue case then I understand why this needs to be done, BUT if it isn't then, the owner doesn't deserve to own this pony, or any pony for that matter, disgusting leaving his feet like this, I'd report it myself but nothing to prove now because you've done an amazing job, one to keep an eye on though, hope the owner booked in for the next trimming 6 to 8 wks, I'm assuming, great work,

Even if you do report cases of neglect like this with sufficient evidence of abuse & it goes to court, the horse owner just says to the judge that they were experiencing a family or financial crisis, or an acute bout of depression & the judge lets them off

What you are seeing is the damage from the laminae stretching. This Is caused by the hoof being over grown. The damage was already there before I cut the hoof. Trimming it back just showed how much damage had been done. I have take the toe back to get it more in line with the distal phalanx.
