Today I show you how to trim Pearl Weed and discuss the benefits of snails in your aquarium and aquascape. I also discuss the truth behind heavy root-feeding plants, such as Amazon swords and cryptocoryne aquarium plants. I use Seachem Flourish Tabs to improve the growth of these plants.

I don't know how much they benefit a planted tank because of how diminutive they are but I love the mini ramshorn snails with the sideways shells. I like the idea of mimicking nature and having a variety of detritivores that operate on the different scales of an ecosystem. On another note it's great to have you back. A lot of aquarium channels have shifted to an overly commercial, influencery feel. You still seem like a very real person. It's nice to have a window into another hobbyist's tank and hear them discuss the hobby in the way you do.

Hey thanks! Mine seem to be eating tons of waste and algae every night!! Maybe it's more noticeable in a small aquarium. I enjoy ramshorn as well. Especially the red rasmshorn!

Hey glad to be back! Thanks so much for always supporting my channel! I will be trying something new here in the future. It's these compost pellets. I am going to try them with sand instead of using aquasoil or dirt. They are really potent, so a small amount underneath the sand should suffice!

Bladder snails were eating my green wavy bucephalandra shoots so I turned loose two pea puffers on them. That's the only heathy plant I've noticed them eating. Thanks for posting again!

People think that they don't make a difference, but they do. Mine help to get rid of algae in plant leaves. I always have less algae with snails. It's hard to balance a tank with such a small water volume, so they are even more important in a nano system.

Hey, thanks! Glad to be back. I will be trying out some compost pellets here in the future instead of aquasoil or dirt. I think a thin layer underneath some sand would work well.

Great episode. Malaysian trumpets are good and I like bladder snails a lot in spite of ppls dislike. I like to keep the green dust algae alive and since bladders grow monstrous on that you will have very good pea puffer synergy that way. I was keeping 3 pea puffers in a 5 gallon with Corydoras no fin nipping once I had an appropriate sized snail colony. I have been told phosphates and bioactive carbon from rotting source are perfect nutrients for algae throw in extra silicates and get another diatoms explosion. Once I added a timer, adjusted par, and did more water changes I noticed the plants started winning out. Co2 helps immensely. I have a tank rn that is designed with a hang-on-back filter siphoning from the bottom with an intake built into the substrate, drains like a sink. A sort of vortex filtration, circular flow and sandbed substrate tapering towards middle so the debris go into the filtration and don't linger in the tank. Technically I think this enhances the beneficial bacterial ecosystem and helps reduce algaes that grow on the detritus in the display area. My next little project is bldg a sump for it. I uploaded a video of it today. I keep seeing your freshwater tanks and now I want pearlweed carpet and glass catfish. I'm liking your Japanese aquascape ideations.

Hey thanks! Your filtration does sound like it will help increase your beneficial bacteria if you are getting more waste into the filter. Less organic waste in the display and more waste in the filter coupled with high O2 is a winning combination for good water quality!

Soft water, snails and shrimp? What keeps their shells healthy? Thanks.

Hey, there is enough bicarbonate in the water at 3-5 dKH (50-90 ppm carbonate). It's not super soft just quite a bit softer than 8 pH, for example. My water is usually around 6.5-7 pH. I will soften it a bit if it gets above 7 pH. All nutrients are better absorbed at slightly acidic to neutral pH values.

I've never had any issues with snails or shrimp in these conditions. They can also eat their shells after molting.

Sadly, the invasion stigma with snails give them bad rep. But to me snails are like shrimp, I love all the kinds of snails, cause they are live and fun to watch do there thing.
