Planting Sorghum Sudan Grass/John Deere Guy on International?/Future Farmer on Ford 9N

2 жыл бұрын

With the Winter Rye cut, Alan decided to work the piece and plant Sorghum Sudan Grass as well as seeding it in with Alfalfa, Orchard Grass, and Trefoil. Paul finished up dragging the piece with the International 1066 Tractor, but Justin got to get behind the wheel of the 9N Ford Tractor and roll the field. After Justin finished, Alan started planting with the Case 830 Tractor, John Deere Planter, and Brillion. On the field West of the farm, Jen's Dad, a notoriously loyal John Deere guy, was behind the wheel of the International 1066 rolling it while Alan planted the Sorghum Sudan. Is Jen's Dad going Red?
The next day had chances of rain, so we decided it was a good day to check the back fence line along the Kettle River and let the cows out onto the back pasture.

I had that same JD drill. Nice piece, I don't ever remember working on it much. I like the brillion, I always broadcast alfalfa ahead of drilling oats for cover. Sudan is a nice choice. As much shade as you throw on JD, you sure have a bunch of green on that farm. And besides, I'll swear Jen's dad had a bag on his head driving that thing. Best regards from Indiana.

I really like that 1066. I have one that my grandfather bought new in 75 and we picked up another one and restored it. Our operation runs newer equipment for the most part but the old 1066 gets ran on a regular basis. We recently put a DT 466 in it out of a jinked out 1660 combine.

Henry Ford would be proud of Justin. His purpose behind his creations was to keep kids from leaving the farm. His design criteria in the 9n was to allow younger people to operate it. Perfect. Yes, an older Ford tractor is a GREAT tractor for kids to learn on. Also for older people. We farmed with 4 horses and in 1958 when I was 13, my dad( age 68) bought his FIRST tractor. I begged him to get a JD B , Farmall H, or Moline R similar to what our neighbors had. No, he bought a 1949 8N Ford and said....." I am too old to step up high to get on those other tractors"

Alan, sorry I'm technologically deficient between TV and computer and flip-flop phone. I've been watching on TV for three months not realizing I could comment on the computer. At Ed s we would have used a cultimulcher it's 10 foot wide three rows of rollers and two rows of single tooth five teeth in a row. It's all hydraulic for transportation, but if you're inside ground you may want to keep the teeth up separately. Justin is doing a great job getting it in and out of gears gently. Jen's dad needs to learn, 's RED is good. Thanks Skip Ruckert

Rolling before seeding is a good idea. How deep were you putting in the sorghum? A few years ago I planted some late July because the oats flooded out. We cut it in early September before a frost. It had still gotten waist high and made really nice feed.
