Spring Planting has begun here at the Dairy Farm. The John Deere 820 was getting oats in the ground with the help of the Van Brunt Grain Drill. After getting the oats planted, Alan used the International 1256 with a homemade field roller to smooth the field and pack down any rocks.

Trinity Dairy was established in 2006, in Minnesota. Alan and Jennifer farm with their 5 children; Jessica, Justin, Jordan, Joshua, and Jason. We milk a mix of 33 Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire cattle. We also enjoy sharing our family's love of Draft Horses and using them for logging and other farm work. Dairy Farming in Minnesota can be challenging, but it's a lifestyle we really enjoy. Subscribe today to watch our small family dairy farm and family grow while continuing to thank our Lord for the blessings we've been given.

I understand rolling beans where you don't want to lift the combine head and lose the lower beans but isn't oats fruit higher on the stalk and therefore conducive to raising the head? Only thing I can think of is maybe oats will "lay down" after wind or heavy rain requiring a lower head placement at harvest. Its great that you guys answer questions....thanks.
@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy Жыл бұрын
A big reason for rolling it is better soil to seed contact, and it helps keep the soil from blowing away. But you are also correct, that if the grain gets laid down, you will have to cut close to the ground.

Your video is always fun to watch Alan, I know I've said this before but when you have the camera position in the certain direction of the 1066, it looks like a 1468, my land renters were here at my farm the other day and planting the field planted, does any of your neighbor farm their land with air drills? I think they are similar to anhydrous, John Deere and Case makes them and New Holland does too, we're getting rain here now and it's pretty chilly here too

"It's a little hilly so those maps are often off" ... my father always said he preferred to buy gently rolling farm land as you got more of it! That harrow drag behind the drill is how the English guys do it. That will work, I don't think you really need to roll it. Cool roller though -- you could modify that to be a rolle-crimper and start growing winter rye as a cover crop, plant into it green, then when the corn/beans emerge run the roller-crimper to terminate the rye leaving you with a weed-free straw mat. The gold standard is Rick Clark who shows what he does on various youtube videos.

The drill we have has the individual chains dragging behind each seed row. You don’t have those? Or you prefer the more aggressive spike tooth?

Hey Alan another good video watching how small time farmers plant I guess some I do have one question what is the benefit of rolling? I belong to another farm channel maybe you've heard of it it's called Laura farms she's in central Nebraska but they don't roll so I am kind of wondering why you do?
@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy Жыл бұрын
Rolling has a few benefits, it flattens the ground, so it's nicer for picking up down grain and also bailing straw, and if I cut it for hay I can cut it lower to the ground, it also helps keep the soil from blowing away and from drying out, and gives better soil to seed contact.

Get the coulter blades to work on covering oat seeds. Get roller as wide or wider than drill. Hook that to drill and you'll be done in 1 pass. Spread fertilizer with buggy before drilling and no need to for drag or rolling that separately. Urea fert. can be treated for preventing evaporation if not rain coming soon. You really need to look around for opportunities to reduce trips over field. Time and cost of fuel , wear and tear on machinery ,etc. , etc. is costing you a fortune. Lots of opportunities to improve profits ! Of coarse questioning why planting oats alone is good idea might be biggest decision. Why grow oats alone. For just cost of seed you could have a hay crop 3 times a year for 3 or 4 years. Much more profitable.
@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy Жыл бұрын
I would like to get a roller, the same width as the drill, but they are way more expensive than just using the roller I have. I know you can treat the urea, but they don't treat it for free! And I have explained many times in passed videos, the reason I don't put certain fields into hay, Is because I can only rent them on a year to year basis, so if I spend a fortune on seeding it into hay, and wasn't able to rent the land any more, that investment would be gone!
