For years, we've had a really ugly recycling set up in our conservatory. And now I've finished decorating our utility kitchen in there and about to move on to the living room with kitchen, I wanted to tidy it up.
So only using up off cuts and some new hinges and handle, I designed and built my new recycling bin cabinet with storage for bin liners etc underneath.
If you want to make it yourself, then you can find free plans in my blogpost here, taking in to consideration adjustments I did in the end:
Here's the things I used to make it (As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases made through links.

Nice project! You're very clever with your solutions that would surely frustrate me. My wife didn't know I installed some soft closers on the kitchen cabinets. She thought the cabinets were broken because it didn't have the slam she was used to hearing. LOL. Now you know why I put the soft closers in.

IKEA do very good euro hinges with soft close that clip on the hinge itself. They are for cupboard doors and wardrobes but they seem to go a little past 90 degrees. I had same trouble with the gas strut when fitting them to my car bonnet.

A bit of advice for using a router for hinges is use a fence. You can set that to the width of the hinge so you will get a perfect cut up the back every time

Anther Great project. When you next glue up a wide board use 2 sash clamps on the bottom and 2 on the top it may help to keep it flat. Also use some paper between the clamp and the wood it stop the clap marking the wood. From the first photo of the doors I thought you had bought the doors. Looks good keep up the good work.

Another excellent video! One way of stopping slippage while you clamp pieces together is Salt! Glue up as usual but before clamping add a sprinkle of salt to the glued edge. The salt will stop the glued edge moving as you apply clamping pressure! Another way is to leave a small area unglued and after offering up pull the wet joint apart and add a drop of superglue! Clamp and you will find the superglue has bonded the points together stopping any slippage! A third way is to use dowel instead of biscuits! You can but cheap dowel markers for a couple of quid in several dowel sizes (ebay is your friend)! For this method you find the centre line of the end you are joining and drill your dowel holes. Next you insert the markers into the dowel holes and offer up your next piece. Once it is lined up tap the opposite end of the piece and you leave a series of small marks into the wood where your other set of dowel holes need to go! Those Soft Closers are designed to stop a horizontally hinged door from slamming so the only weight they will stand is the force of a sprung hinge! As you noted .... not right for this job! But you could fit them at the opposite end of the door from the hinge .... not perfect but better than a poke in the eye ;0) Gas Dampers rams are the superior product by far! If you do not have suitable instructions for the distance you need to work out the max and min extension of the damper and fix your ram so the lid when open is fixed lower than the max and when closed is greater than the minimum! It was hard to tell from the video but you may have Gas Rams, which are a different beast. When they re fitted they will apply a force upward when opening past the pivot point and a force Downward when below it! I assume you do not want that so you need to check! A damper will simply oppose any change to the end points distance, a Ram will always try to open to full extent! All this stuff is easy when you know but if you don't you don't! Tricks of the trade (and a long life);0)
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for all your tips! I'd never heard of salt. And yes, I realised about the soft closers after filming haha. I have a feeling the strut I tried was one that stayed open. It was extremely difficult to push closed and the lid is propably not much over 1kg. I'll keep my eyes peeled as it would just finish it off!

Great job, I'm thinking of creating something similar for our new kitchen. I'll definitely use this as a starting point. One question though, if you needed a new tool to help with joints, would you prefer a biscuit cutter or a pocket hole jig?... I want to advance from glue and screws but not sure which is the best way to go for a relative beginner to joinery..
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! I would now definitely say a pocket hole jig! I have the Trend one, It's a little easier to set up and you on'y need to do it once. Some say pocket holes aren't as strong, but wood glue will help and in general, I find it more versatile. Also, if I made this station again, I'd probably design it where the front comes out on an angle with a chain attached. That way you can use the top and I have habit of leaving it open as it's convenient :)

Cheers! It's one of those tools, I really wish I'd bought sooner. I do recommend buying a clamp to go with it where it hooks into the pocket holes. I still haven't bought one because they're about £30 each and don't like spending, but know it'll make life easier when screwing stuff together. Have fun with it! You may have already seen this, but I set up the Trend one here before using it for the first time: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9Cnlahql7HRfnk.html

Lovely project and a great idea Vikkie. Also great to see himself (el pooch). Just wondering what do you use the three recycle bins for and what about your ordinary bin? Does that just remain standalone?

Thanks! We put food waste with general waste, so we're only using these 3 bins total. Unfortunately our council now charges £40 yearly for the main green bin, so we haven't paid for it.

I’ve found that using gas struts, like the ones you have, tend to be better at work holding something open, rather than having a soft close function. I recently built a toy chest for my toddler and found some different gas strut soft close hinges that are built with a support mechanism to ensure that you always have a soft close. Lol you losing your rag when your spacers fell out i normally use another hinge , if can get 1 in , did you have to trim a bit more off after painting iv made that mistake before doing furniture gaps were so tiny to allow shrinkage then when fitted house doors my gaps looked so neat ..... until i painted and glossed and ended up having to take every door back off 100 doors later happy days haha keep up the good work im sure dewalt will be sending you full range of tools ( hint hint mr dewalt) for the drill been on full view 😁

Haha, yes, I did have to sand the bottom of the top section down a bit after painting, but thankfully it was just a touch 😅

Excellent job. A question about paint. Do you find the dulux satin wood paint drys & stay sticky?
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It shouldn't stay sticky after a full day of drying which is probably weather dependent. If it's left longer and still sticky, then my guess is the coat applied was far too thick, but I'm not a pro. I also only apply two thinnish coats with a foam roller and leave to dry full between.
