Just imagine if the Belgians had come over during the 'Glorious Revolution' and started pouring these beers in beer halls (pubs?). You would all be speaking Dutch now instead of English. (JFYI the (old) English language was spread and adopted by native Britons through beer halls)

You did say you were going to do this one, nicely done :) I am interested in getting a PerfectDraft at some point for the selection, wondering what your thoughts on it were vs the SUB machine, assuming you've had it for a while now? I own the SUB machine but not the PD one. Pros/Cons of the SUB: Not a bad selection especially if you like Lager. Not so much on the Belgian front though only offering Affligem. Smaller TORPS mean you don't need to drink it as fast before it's past it's best. Smaller machine takes up less space. Easy to dispose of/recycle the TORPS. Although I do have to question how environmentally friendly these are! So far I've found the SUB can be a bit noisy, in this heat it seems to need to operate the fans constantly to keep the beer cool. Pros/Cons of the PD Machine: Much better selection (Kwak and Triple Karmeliet are two very good options amongst others such as Leffe) 6L kegs means you have to replace the drink less often. 6L kegs also means you have to drink the same thing out of it for roughly the equivalent of 18 standard 33CL bottles, and I believe within 2 weeks is best, so it's an average of slightly more than one bottle a day once you commit to opening a keg. The kegs carry a premium price, but do offer the return for £5 credit mechanism and can often be bought on multi buys. Returning the kegs seems like a bit of an annoyance, Collect+ takes them but they aren't everywhere. On both they appear to operate in the same manner, being a bag in a container style mechanism, probably quite short lifespan drinks due to the differences in how they are stored (longest TORP I had has a BBE December this year, my Triple Karmliet bottles are like 2020 or something!). If you could only pick one which would you pick and why? Do you find the 6L kegs encourage you to drink them faster? I like my Belgian stuff but I wouldn't want to be forced to drink 18 bottles worth of the same one in a row as I like the choice I get. How noisy do you find them? I don't have a basement or anything so can't keep things in ideal chilled conditions barring the fridge, my SUB machine is on the side in the kitchen at present. Would the PD machine be out of place on a standard kitchen worktop? If I got one I'd probably only have one of them "active" at a time.

Thanks, I got the compact SUB which is the new one for £50 odd the other week, seems good but mine is not spinning down to low power mode, possibly because the ambient temp is too warm in my kitchen and it's working harder to compensate. I have a power meter plugged into it and it uses around 60W when chilling a new TORP, drops down to 25-30W after it's reached the green light. The SUB website says it can go down to 10W when the ambient temp is 20-22 degrees but I've not seen it manage that yet. Do you find you use one more consistently than the other? I am quite happy with the slightly lower quantity per TORP, if the PD machine isn't as good as the bottles I may simply keep using the SUB for lagers and use bottles for the decent Belgian stuff + better selection.

I'm crazy behind on my sub videos as it is but I am sub #168 :) Have you ever had Westvleteren before? I want to try it but it's quite hard to get hold of, to buy it in person you have to phone ahead and book in a collection with the Abbey!

Hi Mark Just getting into Belgian beers,(only had about a dozen in the last month or so) getting a little tied of ipa, neipa big hippy beers etc. , My knowledge is not all that good on Belgian beer. But this is a terrific beer, dare I say I like it better than Westmalle trappist tripel. Anything Belgian, your my go to channel. Cheers

I have both machines and I although both machines deliver a nice and fresh beer the PD is a far easier pour. I use the correct branded glass for each keg/torp but find the PD keg settles better. All of my glasses are beer clean and the same temperature as the keg/torp. I'm thinking of buying the blade if there is a good deal on black friday as when/if you have mates round you really need greater capacity. In my opinion both machines offer fresher beer than the majority of the UK brewed under license bottles and cans so in effect they are both worth having.

I prefer it over De Garre and Westmalle. I think it comes down to wheat malt. I think Corsendonk does it the same with their Agnus, but slightly less convincingly.

Hello Mark Which do you think are better/prefer, 75cl or 33cl bottles? ,in Karmeliet ,and as a general comment on all Belgian Beers. The 75cl are a premium product (per ml),and I'm not sure why.I've bought quite a few 75cl Karmeliet from Tesco's(bargain at£5) and smaller ones elsewhere ,but can't tell the difference, same with the larger bottles of Golden Carolus Tripel and Classic and others i've tried . Cheers Neil

The yeast is different, the hops are different (used to be wild hops), the grain is different and even the water is different. The taste when it came out in 1996 was very different from what you are drinking now,...So I hate to disappoint you about the history of this one. It's not even 30 years old! This is marketing at its best. The Geuze sour beers, old brown beers and Trappist beers are the only ones you can trust to be genuinely Belgian heritage stuff. There are some small brewers out there recreating the real old beers but Karmeliet is not one of those beers unfortunately. No hard feelings for Bosteels. They won a lot of awards and know how to make beer and have been making great stuff for many generations. It's just silly how they sell it.

The third spice in that beer is cardemon! :-) I know..because i brew a beer with the same ingredients..but in other volumes. And the same yeast...its about 12 procent in alcohol..:-) so its a bit like a Karmaliet XXL? :-)
