If you don’t mind me asking, is Comorian terribly different from Kiswahili?
@lawtraf8008
@lawtraf8008 Жыл бұрын
@@baintreachas Wow, I'm impressed by the fact that you know the relation between Comorian and Kiswahili. Did you search the language on Google after reading my comment of you already knew about my country and the native language ?? Comoros is such a small basically unknown country that 99.99% of people don't even know we exist. That's why I was surprised by your comment. To reply to you, yes it is terribly different. My native language Comorian or Shikomori originally came from Kiswahili but evolved through the centuries to become its own different language. Most of of the vocabulary is still of swahili origin though. I can understand some words of someone who speaks Kiswahili but not full sentences/discussions. It's the same the other way. Where are you from ?
@baintreachas
@baintreachas Жыл бұрын
@@lawtraf8008 i am from ireland but have an interest in kiswahili and linguistics in general - so i was already aware that comoras spoke either a dialect of kiswahili or a different language with suahili roots, depending on who you ask. (i imagine it's actually like french vs spanish - i'm a spanish native, long story - based on your description). i happened to remember about comoras specifically because... and this is stupid, please forgive me... i like your flag! it's a good flag! i mean, it's hard not to be outdone by seychelles (WHO KNEW YOU WERE ALLOWED TO PUT THE STRIPES THAT WAY. INNOVATIVE), but you hold your own out there. (meanwhile it looks like Mauricio just gave up and went for the horizontal stripes, understandable) ireland is only 5-6 times bigger than comoras! small countries stick together! and there are WAYYYY more native comordian speakers than there are native irish speakers soooo i refuse to consider that a tiny language bc what would that make us irish speakers! lmao related question - admittedly, this much i had to google - apparently, ¨comorian¨ could refer to four different languages. would you consider them as such? what's the mutual intelligibility rate like in that case? sorry for the interrogation
@lawtraf8008
@lawtraf8008 Жыл бұрын
@@baintreachas You're so lovely. I love Ireland and Irish people. I also love Spain their people and especially their language. I would love to be able to speak Spanish, Hablo espanol un poco, quiero aprender... Just like you I really love languages, my dream superpower would be to be able to speak every language on earth. Let's get back to the topic. As a French native speaker and someone who has been learning espagnol/watch a lot of Spanish shows, I would say your French-Spanish comparison is kind of accurate. Interesting that you remembered us because of our flag, I'm so used to it that I've never thought it was special/not the norm but now that I think about it, I can see it so it's not stupid. I wanted to ask, you kept saying "Comoras", the name in English is "Comoros". Is it a typo? by that I mean, you didn't mean to write it like that or was it intentional ? "Comoras" is the Spanish version. The French version is " Comores". I googled the Irish version and it's apparently "Chomóra". I just googled it and find out that only 40k to 80k native speakers in Ireland with a population of around 5 millions. I knew it was low but I've never thought it was this low. We have a population of 900k to 1 million people and all of us speak our native language so you're correct about us having way more native speakers. I hope more Irish try to learn their native language so it doesn't completely die in the future. Also, you said you're a native Spanish??? How did you end up in Ireland and on top of that learn a dying language like Irish?? Very interesting story I would love to know if you want to share of course. Finally, to reply to your last interrogation, Comoros is a territory made up of 4 islands. Each island speak their own version of Shikomori (Comorian). However we all understand each others perfectly despite having differences. We consider them 4 dialects of 1 language. But I feel like people on the outside would see them as being quite different. I don't know if because we're just used to each others so we don't see much differences but I I would say it's not like British English - American English or Spain Spanish - Mexican Spanish, the dialects are more different from each others than the examples I mentioned. Hope I replied to your question. Btw, how many languages do you speak ?
@baintreachas

@@lawtraf8008 I know most countries by their Spanish names first so when they’re very similar to their English names I mix them up/don’t know they’re different (so many are the same just w different pronunciation, so it’s difficult to tell). Plus I usually have the Spanish keyboard on, so it won’t see that as a mistake. So it wasn’t a typo but it was a mistake/habit, thanks for letting me know For the Spanish part - long story! But u asked! all my family’s Irish and I’ve only grown up in Ireland, but when I was born my parents unexpectedly had to leave the country for a long time (my brother is autistic and the services in Ireland for autism are basically non-existent, so they initially left to get a diagnosis, then to get treatment… then there were immigration issues… and ended up being out of the country for longer than expected - about five years). Initially they had paid someone to look after me for a month or so, but that person ended up being kind enough to eventually take me in free of charge. That person was a Spanish immigrant who barely spoke English. So my first language ended up being Spanish, but of course I learned English very quickly and naturally, once I went to kindergarten and all that. Later, when my parents returned, I was still very close with that person, and kept speaking Spanish at home out of habit… so my parents also had to learn some Spanish, haha. But I speak English better and all, I can’t read or write academic language in Spanish like I can in English etc, so English is still my main language. Also, I think people use “native” in a lot of ways, but when I use it I just mean my first main language- I personally do not consider myself Spanish at all, culturally. In Ireland, only a few areas speak Irish natively, but everyone learns it in school. It’s not very well taught, but I really love it, so I started to work on it myself a few years ago, and now I can understand and speak it decently well. Anyway, I kind of feel like every Irish person has to at least try to do that, to, like you said, maintain the language! So I speak English and Spanish fluently, of course, and hope to one day also be fluent in Irish, and Portuguese (and so many other languages that interest me but that I can’t possibly learn in a single human lifetime!!). Also, studying ASL and then plan to study ISL (American sign language, Irish sign language). I have a deaf American relative, so that’s why the ASL- also because it’s the most common and widely used sign language. When I get a handle on that, I’ll try ISL- just that there’s so few resources on it, you really can’t learn on your own, so that’s not for a few years yet, probably. What about you? You’re a French and Comoran native? I imagine that’s because of the French rule of Comoras, is it very common to speak both over there (and both natively)? Also also, this is a very specific request, but is there anything online that you think accurately represents your language/dialect (like a clip of a native speaking)? I ask because I’ve noticed a lot of the top results when I search for that kind of thing have a ton of comments saying “this is super inaccurate, this is clearly someone learning it or someone who just knows a few words from their immigrant parents etc etc”. If you’re curious at all about the sound of Irish, you can just look up TG4 and click on any random video and it’ll probably be a native speaker - or a very very advanced learner with a native accent - speaking naturally about whatever topic. Most other stuff on KZfaq isn’t very authentic, imo, so it just makes it sound like Irish is a very awkward language- which I swear it’s not!
