In this video, we take a look at two different toe loop techniques on the ice. Both produce the same result.....a clean triple toe loop, but each prioritises different things. In this slow-motion break down of this figure skating jump, I explain what is happening during the jump, how the techniques are similar, and also how they differ.
One of the techniques focuses on height, whereas the other focuses on fast rotation. Which figure skating toe loop do you use and why? Let me know in the comments below :)

I finally understood the difference between the two, thank you. Prioritizing height seems to be more stable, but requires greater height. Could you do a similiar comparisson with other jumps?

Glad to hear you liked the video Katharina 🙂 both techniques work well in different ways, and I wanted to show that sometimes there are multiple ways of doing the same element successfully. I will do some more videos like this if people want to see more. I was thinking of covering axel next as I had a few different axel techniques that I have filmed.

Well done analysis of it @icecoachonline. It is quite interessing for a large audience to understand that different technics even if there are similarities in some areas that can bring same results. I am glad you bring technical aspect to figure skating for a large audience and make people understand how it works. 👌

Great video and very interesting! I’m a huge figure skating fan and was able to complete a single toe loop when I was a teenager. I never took lessons but would study different jumping techniques by repeatedly watching VHS video tapes of figure skating and trying to imitate what I saw at the rink. Now, some 30 years later, I find out that the technique I was using back then was the Mohawk, LOL. However, I did notice the different entrances back then. The way I distinguished the two was by calling them the “Eastern” and the “Western” styles because it seemed like most of the skaters from Europe and Russia utilized the Drop 3 Turn, and most of the skaters from the western hemisphere used the Mohawk. I may be totally wrong, but that’s what I remember. Now I’m rambling, but it’s just so cool to stumble upon this video and actually learn the correct info so many years later. Thank you!

I know this video is probably extremely helpful to those who don't understand figure skating the same way figure skaters do but the second example of the toe-loop with the mohawk entrance isn't generally regarded as good technique. The prerotation of the upper body creates toe axels as you are truly taking off forward. Due to taking off forward, the guy prerotated about a 3/4 revolution before getting off his toe pick, this is commonly regarded as a cheated take-off. His hip snap was okay but jumps should always prioritize height rather than rotation speed otherwise jumps with 3 or 4 rotations are harder to do, sometimes impossible, and cause more strain on the body. His air position was tightly over his right side which is great. His landing was quite beautiful however, the second toe-loop in combination with the same unfavourable technique was underrotated. I love this KZfaq channel and they essentially taught me how to skate so I in no way intend to post hate, this is just a bit of constructive criticism! Please be careful with how you jump in figure skating, techniques were created to do these incredible feats while being healthy. If you want to study good toe loop technique, look at the first example or go look at slow-motion footage of skaters such as Yuzuru Hanyu who has what might be the greatest toe-loop technique. Happy skating everyone!

Nice analysis! I noticed the differences from different skaters but it is great to be able to watch it side by side and compare it. Im in the middle of final week for this semester so Im not sure if I have a good question to ask but I was wondering, would you guys still do live QnA like you used to?

Glad to hear you enjoyed the video! If it's popular, I will make more like this ❤️ I do plan on doing more live Q&A sessions, I haven't done them recently as I was building the Ice Coach Online resource website and also teaching people on Zoom. When things settle down, I will do another 🙂

Thank you! Watching things in slow motion helps me understand what is going on. Especially since the key elements were pointed out. Even if I probably will never actually do things, I'm still fascinated by the mechanics behind things. I'm always afraid of leaning into curves etc. While skating. I like having my feet underneath me and struggle trusting my edges. Do you have tipps how to overcome the fear of slipping/falling?
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video ❤️ being scared of leaning into curves is very common. The thing to remember is when your techniques is correct and you have a bit of speed, you will balance when leaning into the curve, just like when riding a bike. There might be a video up on the channel that talks about overcoming the fear of falling actually. If not, it's definitely up on the website. I had planned to make any other video on this topic too, but I need to wait until ice rinks open up again.

regarding the 1st guy : -I know what a 3 turn is, but what is a "drop 3 turn "? -Also when he picks with his left foot is the weight transferred to that foot? - I know the skater is using the momentum of the right foot pushing through. Also are his arms swinging in an upward motion or just swinging around into the jump?

Yes! Triple toe on small ice wow. Better understanding because of the pauses where things where slowed down AND Explained well. Hips to ankles Square and closed. Head foward. Back spin quickly. These tutorial videos are all good, very very helpful for me coaching myself. The off ice exercises are great for me to remember footwork, Was surprised to know I already know Russian Stroking, using this video to help with regaining double toe loop. Hear things my retired coach used to say, stay over your rotation side. Website will be at the boards with me next skate. So much air. 😍⛸️

The head needs to be anchored for consistency. Please watch Nathan Chen and Hanyu. They both keep their head still/to the right. Hanyu exaggerates it on every jump (including the triple axel) - Brian Orser teaches skaters to do this. Thanks.
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying, and I am familiar with both yuzuru and Chen. But I disagree that it must be anchored for consistency. The reason is the skater in the video "Nick" was one of the most consistent jumpers I have every worked with. In 2 years of shows he maybe missed 2 or 3 triple jumps. He doesn't anchor the head.....

Yuzuru hanyu’s , both feet levelled , looks back in direction he came from, gets a lot of height , legs are straight at take off for a very quick hip snap = rotational speed + height

@Christopher Boyadji Hi Chris! In artistic roller skating, the second jump would be downgraded as pre-rotated, but I don't think it's the same for ice skating :) looking forward to seeing you and Zoe skate for UK in the future! As an older skater, I really admire Zoe.

3T from the second skater looks very much pre-rotated, he is taking off when he is almost going forward (not sure how to say this properly aha). Impressive rotation speed though
