Great pictures. My Dad worked for Esso oil company and we lived in Georganpopuli from 1960 - 1962. On Google Earth I can still see the tall square water tower that was on the corner of the block where we lived. It was just sandy streets and small single family houses then and now is all built up with big buildings, but the water tower is still there. We walked every morning to the Oil Companies School which I can also still see on Google Earth. I was in third and fourth grade. My friends and I would ride bikes around town and on weekends the family would go for trips to Sabratha and Leptis Magna. Spent lots of time at the beach three blocks down the street from the water tower. Of all the places we lived overseas Libya made the biggest impression on me. I didn't want to leave when Dad got transferred. I often think of Tripoli and those times.

Thanks for bringing back memories of a great country. I was born in Tripoli in 1945 and in 1953 went to school in England. My father worked for Barclays Bank and I returned every summer until he retired 1967.

Thank you very much for this very good slide show. As a little German girl I've lived with my familiy in Giorgimpopoli from 1964 to 1968. Precious memories for all of us. I hope Libya will get back to peace very soon!!

I remember all these photos, the beach, the city. Was 13 when I left in 1974! Fond memories.

Great video. I was there from 1963-1966 from 3rd grade to 6th grade. My mom worked as a lifeguard at the base pool when we were there. Sure would be nice to run into some schoolmates from back then. I loved living there then.

I was in Libya between January 1967 and June 1967 based at Timimi, then Derna and later RAF El Adem .. I used to drive for 4 hours from Timimi to Tobruk to collect 300 Jerry Cans of petrol.. I loved the desert and but only saw Tobruk and Cyrene and the War Cemetery at Acroma

Lived in Tripoli and later at Wheelus, left in March 1960. Fond memories of a happy childhood..

chatalaine , wow ! you got the fotos of the golden years of Tripoli ! Thanks ! We want more . I am a Libyan from Tripoli & I know how these days were sweet & lovely . Nostalgia most of the times is a mirage , but in the case of Tripoli , is not ( a mirage ) .

Very beautiful place. It is the first time I have ever seen pictures of Libya, outside of the news.

What a small world. I had Mr. Carter for 6th grade, too. He also taught me piano. Remember the spiral notebooks we did of the continents. I have a great story about my Asia notebook and Libyan customs. Funny now - not so much then. I'm sure we crossed paths at some point. Sure am glad you remember my Dad. We had a great time at OCS. So many memories.

What wonderful pictures. Lots of great memories. I was in Tripoli '65 - '70. Age 9 - 13. Parents taught at OCS. Weekends at K15. Sunday brunch at Wheelus O-Club after services at Union Church of Tripoli. Really good times. Wish I could take my family back. Be interesting to see what I still remember. Seems like forever ago. Sorry I lost touch with so many good friends. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful pictures chatalaine, I love the Turkish fort and the pictures of the sea bring back memories big time. I was raised in Libya from 1958 to 1977, we lived way out of town at kilometer 9 then moved closer in to kilometer 7 near the teen club. My father, who was a petroleum geologist stayed on into the 80’s. It was the best place on earth to be raised if you get a chance read “A Nest Of Corsairs” by Seton Deardon, the book brings libya’s big thick, rich history into perspective.

What a lovely video. Lots of memories. We lived in Garden City from 1962 to 1970 Tripoli was a great place to live. Even though my father was not in the services. (Barclays Bank DCO) We belonged to the Officers Club and I seemed to remember that as a teenager I was laways there swimming. A lovely trip down memory lane. Thank you

I was there '56 and "57 as a preteen. Some of the pictures like the officers club brought back memories of the wonderful place. I wish i could visit before I'm too old, but sadly it's now the Arab Fall in Lybia now. Tom J.

I was a child when we lived there. We have reminisced while watching my parents' slides through the years and of our memories. We were lucky to have been there and had the experience. I always wanted to return and to share with my children. Thanks for posting.

Excellent collection, Dana! It brought back so many memories. Tripoli didn't look much different in the 1960s from my 1950s remembrances. Loved the music background.

I remember watching the city burn in 67from the rooftop of our apartment and being evacuated back to England. This video has brought back the better memories and my days at Tripoli college

the golden time

Wow .. so many memories! I have no photographs from the time I lived there, though my stepdad probably still does. He was stationed at Wheelus and we lived there from 1956 to 1960. I was in the 4-7 grades there .. so long ago. We lived off base and I would take off and wander around the city by myself .. no one ever knew I was gone. Sometimes I would catch a garry for 10 p. because I loved to ride in them. I was scared of nothing. I've never stopped wandering .. Thank you!

Nice pictures. We were stationed at Wheelus AFB from 1962 to 1965 (I was 6 at the time). I recognized the NCO Club in one of the shots. Our mother put us on a float during one of the parades on base, and we were dressed in our ballerina tutu's. We were on the float with Ms. Wheelus (beauty queen). Brings back fond memories.

I lived in libiya for 2 years.. Garabuli near Tripoli.. Went there when i was third grade (1992) when the war started in Bosnia and then came back somewhere in 1995 there where 2,000 other kids in the camp with me. Good memories :)

Brings back lots of memories. Was stationed there in 1954-55. Was assigned to the 633 AC&W squadron as a radar operator. I was only 18 years old at the time. It sure is a long way from Michigan where I was born and still live. Thanks again for the video.

I had Mr. Wagner in the 7th grade...I had Mr. Carter in the 6th grade, when I first found out I had his class, I was worried, he ruled the halls (walkways) back then, he turned out to be a nice teacher. OCS 67-70 nunnmic

My stepdad was stationed there too .. 1956 to 1960 and loved pinochle .. enlisted .. electrician .. we lived off base though. His name is John Pallino.

I was stationed at Wheelus AB from Nov.1958 to Nov. 1960. Assigned to 1615th Support Squadron. Lots of good memories from my time there. I'd like to see a few of my friends but so far no luck in finding them.

I guess it's all in how you look at it. You know like is the glass half full of half empty. I prefer to see it as half full.

Thanks Chatalaine for a wonderful slide show. I have been visiting Libya since 1987. Libya resembles your photos more today than it did 15-20 years ago. Still lots of trash to remove from the beaches. I'll try to upload a slide show of my more recent photo's of Tripoli. A Libyan friend of mine's uncle worked at the gas station on Wheelus as a 14 yr old and went to the US when the base closed. He lives in the US today after serving in the US Army! Thanks again!! P.S. Awecz thank you for your comment. You hit the nail on the head. Maybe one day I will be able to see Tripoli again and I can tell gravydavie first hand that there is a good side to everything.

I lived in Giorgimpopoli from 1963 til 1966My father was a meteorologist at RAF Idris who trained Libyans. We went to the Army School at Prinn Barracks.The Extra Butcher was near where we lived. I have very fond memories of Libya, but I havn't forgotten passing the shanty town, where Libyans lived in houses made of corrugated iron, without toilets and running water every day on our way to school. It would be nice to go back some day, but I'm afraid British citizens aren't so popular.

I'm sorry but the reality is that Italian people born in Libya are still not allowed to get the visa to visit the country. I'm personally happy that Libya has finally reached the independence and open issues are only against Italian Government unable to refund our lost. I don't have any resentment aganist Libya and Lybian people. I'm only sad that I cannot visit the country nor the cemetery in Tripoli where my brother and sister are buried since the 60'.

To be honest I don't understand your comments - I'm in Libya right now and - it's the same like on those pictures. You might not like guy ruling this country (and I'd agree with you on that) but - it's still the good old Libya.

It was nice Libya but with a severe enemy, now Tripoli is free but with worse than before
