Great informative video. As a vintage watch collector, i'd like to see some information on tritium paint that was used from the 1960's though the late 1990's and replaced the much more dangerous radioactive Radium. I have several tritium Rolex sports models from the mid 90's and you can still see some glow after your eyes adjust to the darkness. I live about 30 miles away from Ottawa IL which gained the name "Death City" due to the Radium Girls which in itself is a fascinating yet tragic story of the dangers of occupational radioactivity exposure.

I absolutely agree! Jealous of your vintage Rolexes :) I will try to do the research and make a video...if you find any useful historical references, please send them in! HiHoWilbur@gmail.com The only vintage Tritium lume I have is my old LeJour chronograph. Its lume may be completely dead. I never noticed any glow, but now I am going to have to spend some time with it in a closet ;) Thanks!

Will do and thanks. I became fascinated with this subject while collecting and picked up a late 1940's radium Westclox wristwatch from eBay and my two Geiger counters were screaming so much it nearly zeroed them both out. Even given post 911's security enhancements, I wasn't too surprised that it wasn't flagged in shipping since the radioactivity levels fall off rapidly after about a 15 inches however It has no issues with penetrating the thick sealed tin can it's stored in. It's something I wouldn't feel comfortable about wearing and I’m not radioactive paranoid. Regarding your LeJour chronograph which is a beautiful watch by the way, I'd say give you eyes about 15 minutes to adjust to complete darkness and stare at the dial for a few seconds. You still may be able to see some lume which is cool stuff : ). Thanks.

Hi. You are correct about low distance, and ability of penetration of B-particles emited by tritium. Tritium itself is theoretically safe in glass vial. So, broken vial is not big problem, as you mentioned, amount of gas is so small and it disposed in atmosphere it disappears in milliseconds. Only problem if You eat glass vial and it broke - probably more harmful will be glass in you stomach than tritium. Ok, problem with Tritium is … Einstein ;) So, B-particles unfortunately hits phosphorous, and glass, and it SLOWs down electron by atomic nucleus (look at: Bremsstrahlung - deceleration radiation)… energy can not disappear and is distributed to photon … unfortunately X-ray photon, which has about 18-20keV, so it is low energy X-ray… but X-ray penetrating glass and other materials quite easy. Amount of tritium in the watch is small, and area of impact is small too, so amount of radiation is not very dangerous but is measurable and near, close to wall of common vial is near 10-15x of level of background… ofc. much less after 10mm of watch construction (dependable of materials was used in the watch) Is there any problem ? Nobody knows. You can judge this only that way: Take watch - different model - different measurings needed, and low energy X-ray meter (common Geiger counter is deaf or not able to measure with enough precision), so some Ludlum models has ability to connect low energy X-ray probe. Common Geiger meter measure right about 60-100keV and higher energy, depends of tube construction (for eg russian tubes CTC5 or SBM20 are almost totally deaf at 30keV or lower). Probably more radioactive areas of our planet (some regions of Brasil etc) are much more radioactive than tritium watch… but if You want to limit radiation you are exposing, tritium watch is not perfect friend… :) My opinion: It is safe ? Probably YES, it is necessary ? Not for all. If you are military, police, cave exploration etc… when you are on duty - ok. For fun always wearing … not really.

@ADudeAndHisWatches
@ADudeAndHisWatches Жыл бұрын
Hi Fang, You probably don't need to worry. :) From what I can tell, your risk is probably very low. First, the tritium is captured in the lume paint itself, so unless that paint has been damaged and is flaking and stuff, there isn't much you could get in your lungs. Second, it is old, so the potency of the tritium is much less (and in this case, less is better :). This stuff isn't anywhere near the potency of radium...If it was radium, I would be a bit more paranoid. :0 Thanks for checking out my video!

As long as the tubes are sealed, it should be fine. Glass is very good at containing a thin gas like tritium. So as long as they are still intact, there shouldn't be any radioactive gas in the 2 liter bottle. At least that is how I understand it. :)

I constantly see tritium referenced as a man made gas in modern tritium tubes but can anyone educate me as to how tritium was mixed with zinc sulfide in paint form and applied to the dial to give the constant glow in watches from the 1960's - 1998? Was there a hard form that was then turned into a powder and then mixed with zinc sulfide?
@ADudeAndHisWatches

I'm kind of curious about that myself! I assume they had some kind of liquid that could hold the tritium gas, or charged particles, in suspension so the Beta particles could excite the phosphor in the lume paint. Would be interesting to find out just how they did that.

@@ADudeAndHisWatches I've become very fascinated by radioluminescence. I also live 30 miles away from Ottawa IL where the Radium Girls took place. I know Radium was extracted from minerals and companies like Rolex switched from Radium to lesser emitting tritium paint around 1963 however for the life of me I cannot wrap my head around the concept being a man made gas yet used with zinc sulfide like previos Radium for lume and it seems I'm not alone as I have posed this question to professional watchmakers as well. I have a 1995 tritium GMT Master 16700 and after a few minutes of my eyes adjusting to the dark I can still see a faint tritium glow. What also fascinates me is there seems to be two types of tritium zinc sulfide mixtures Rolex used. My 1980 Air King 5500 can be charged and lasts several seconds before quickly fading however the 1995 GMT cannot be charged at all by UV or sunlight. It mist be related to a change in their zinc sulfide copper doping technique process.

@ADudeAndHisWatches
@ADudeAndHisWatches 3 жыл бұрын
You are probably ok...Has the watch back been opened since the tube was broken? And how long has the tube been broken? The only real danger comes from contact with the gas and there is such a small amount of gas in a particular tube, the danger is pretty minimal anyway. However if you open the watch, you want to not breath around it...maybe let it air somewhere where the gas can dissipate just to be careful. Hydrogen is very good at leaking out of small places, so if the tube has been broken for months or years, I would bet the gas has all leaked out. Doesn't hurt to be cautious and let it air somewhere with the back open, though.

Radon gas is a thing! It's what radium decays into and is the second greatest cause of lung cancer in America. And, Radium has a half-life of 1600 years! I suspect that the danger is quite small as long as you don't open the watch and inhale the radium dust, but I could be wrong. I will not be collecting any watches with radium in them just to be on the safe side. Heck, there are lots of great watches out there, so why bother with the risk? @@TRUEFFEL321 That kind of thing can be kind of scary, but chances are you are in no danger. As I understand it, the main danger from these things is if you handle and breath in the dust from the actual radium lume paint itself. I assume the compass housing was sealed the whole time? Usually they are unless you disassemble them. The amount of bad radiation that you are subjected to is very, very small if you were just near it. ---There can be issues of having the radium decay into radon gas which could be problem in a poorly ventilated area. Getting the compass out of your living area is a good idea in that case. It is most likely if you were to have an issue, it would be respiratory in nature, and not a problem with bowls. ---with that said, you probably still have only a slightly elevated chance of having a problem from having the thing nearby. If you are like me, the amount I worry about things is far worse for me than the actual things ever are :0 With all that said, if you hare having serious issues with anything, it wouldn't hurt to mention it to your doctor as a data point for them to consider...Still, I imagine you will have no problems as long as you haven't ingested the actual radium paint.
