@NCW250 I used to work in a BL/Austin/Rover dealership in the early eighties, and remember the Triumph Acclaim, it turned out to be very reliable and easy to drive with it's 1335cc twin carb engine, it was what buyers wanted, when we sold one, the salesman used to say "the next time we see that car, is when it comes in for a service" he was right.
@Glenn1967ful Жыл бұрын
The Acclaim was a big seller where I lived as people who wanted a British car, but wanted reliability, bought the Acclaim in large numbers. Also a five speed transmission and twin carb engine made driving relaxed.

I agree with you. The Honda-Rover tie-up produced some great cars.

Thanks to Honda, Leyland managed a few more years mate. Leyland's fortunes were down and the Honda Civic( badged as Triumph Acclaim in UK) was the answer to their prayers. Do some research.

The "stop-gap" Acclaim sold well 81-84 - and was a reliable motor for BL/Austin-rover... Tragically BL was sold out to BMW by Bae and the rest is history... Honda were the partners to take the group forward and the Triumph name should never have been binned in the process... If BMW bring Triumph back in the way MINI has - the World could be their oyster!

I'm owning one and is absolutely great. Great handle, great comfort and with the Honda DNA lovely engine...love her!!!

If (it became eventually) MGRover had stayed with Honda it likely would be still here today - rather than being swallowed up by the chinese...

BL were skint at the time. the Dolomite needed updating, the only option was to collaborate with another firm. considering that this car was nearly a re-badged Renault 9, I think the acclaim was fine the way it turned out. it was designed from the start for ease of manufacture, which meant that build quality and reliability was good. Rebadged Honda it may have been but it was still built in a BL factory by BL workers. more importantly it was a genuinely saleable profit making product.

Though it didn't look it, the Acclaim was surprisingly fun to drive. Got mine for fifty quid and did 25000 trouble free miles with only an oil change for maintenance!

nice to see advert for the acclaim! i was lucky to have owned 3 of these cars, they were 100% reliable and never let me down i was 18 then! i have since had the rover 213 and the rover 416 (92K reg) which also had the honda engine fitted and did 147,000 miles with not a glich, now have a civic (98 Sreg) which is 100% reliable too!! (had 4 years) so the woody123 home guy should do some research and look at what are the 10 most reliable cars in surveys! usually honda, toyota, mazda, nissan, etc..

This is so true! i believe honda wanted to buy rover but bae systems (then british aerospace) sold it to BMW this is when honda pulled out their input and shares, shame, after what honda did to help save the company,triumph acclaim, rover 213, rover 416 (concerto shape) and rover 600, all had honda engines and were superb cars!!(owned all but the 600) i can just see the new shape civic with rover badges on!! imagine, thats all we can do now, along with all the great longbridge factory workers.

@GRAHAM502013 жыл бұрын
@NCW250 Yes, i agree with you there....they kept MINI, after discarding Rover, but back to the Acclaim, they were a good small saloon offering reliability which until then with BL was variable, the Dolomite was still a good car, quite solid and well finished, but getting old, the Acclaim was a rebadged Honda, but it was reliable, and comfortable, and sold very well due to that, when i worked in that garage, we sold a lot.....the right car at the right time.
@anthonyperkins75564 жыл бұрын
A nice car but afflicted by the dreaded tinworm and rampant rust which spoiled it. Only minus points going for it is the cramped rear legroom which especially isn't good for tall people. Quite an effective heating and ventilation system fitted which was even more better if you specified the optional extra air-conditioning which made for a even cooler interior in the summer and a rapidly warmed interior in the winter plus effectively demisted windows and it also provided speedy heating.
@SonOfAnders737 жыл бұрын
gorgeous little car
@anthonyperkins75563 жыл бұрын
The car that saw off the Triumph name for good. The name Triumph does not really fit on a small family saloon car range which has been actually designed by Honda. The car was good and reliable but suffered the rampant tinworm disease and nasty rust.
@NCW25013 жыл бұрын
@woody123home is that why Honda is still around and sadly Triumph is no longer around. The Acclaim was a lifeline for Austin-Rover, the car in question was not 'a piece of shit' as you said. And I love Triumph cars.

@GRAHAM5020 my mother in law had an automatic one, she loved it until some twit smashed into it. You use to see them all over the place about 10 or more years ago, I do think they were underrated compared to other Triumphs. I think Austin Rover should have teamed up with Honda rather than BMW, who seem to have a knack of killing off rival makes. Borgsward is one the makes that springs to mind. The rest is history.
@gaz673917 жыл бұрын

A top match for "Only Fools and Horses champagne". Now explain that to me lol. "Totally equipped" with special things like a fifth gear, eh? In retrospect we may remember the last-ever Triumph for being rusty but the elephant on the back seat is the (then seen as) "Japanese" reliability which all cars have achieved by 2012!

This should have never been badged as a Triumph. Triumph was known for making sporty and sports cars. This is a good car (after all, it's based on Honda engineering) but calling it a Rover would have made more sense. January 4, 2018 5:20 pm

This from Wikipedia: "The Acclaim was also a major turnaround point for BL itself, with the car sporting good reliability and build quality from the outset. The Acclaim holds the record for the fewest warranty claims for a BL car." Although as a child, I don't remember seeing many of them on the road at the time!
@Cascroft-lp6ir8 жыл бұрын
+paul hunter no its rubbish. id rather driver a montego or a triumph tr7
@hyperdrive6088 жыл бұрын
+cascroft2011gaming If you'd bought a Montego or TR7 instead of an Acclaim, they would have broken down far sooner!
@Cascroft-lp6ir8 жыл бұрын
hyperdrive probably but at least I wouldn't be driving a car that killed Triumph
@hyperdrive6088 жыл бұрын
+cascroft2011gaming To be fair, by the time we reached the early/mid-80s BL realised they had far too many brand names fighting with each other (Austin, Morris, Rover, Triumph) and some had to go. Sadly Morris and Triumph were the ones that got the chop. I don't know if Triumph had had a different car, they would have survived much longer.
@volkswin14 жыл бұрын
It's a pity that BL did not try and base it's mainstream austin products on Honda designs during the late 70's and 80's, what BL needed were mass market cars that were resonable well built, reliable and modern instead we got the Metro, Meastro & Montego all under developed and based on old designs which were compounded by poor build quality and poor reliability issues throughout the 80's so much so that the austin brand becaome a joke word for crap cars
@NCW25013 жыл бұрын
@MidlandNinja I take that Nanjing own the Austin name. I hope they don't bring Austin back. It was a good make in it's time. It would be like Peugeot bringing Hillman back to live. Which would be good, but we know it would be a Peugeot with the Hillman name on it, and that would be wrong.

yes indeed joh2 rover would still be here if they had stayed with honda! thing is BAE owned it then they sold it to BMW (even tho honda bidded for rover as they had a 20% stake in rover at the time) honda were less than pleased when BAE accepted BMW's bid (after all the acclaim,rover 213,216/416 and 600 series saved rover! all honda engine cars.) They pulled out of rover, BMW took all the 4x4 technolgy (land rover) and mini brand and dumped the rest for next to nowt!

I remember seeing some bopping about in the 1990s as a kid. And I called them Trumpets, because I couldn’t pronounce the name on the back lol. I still think it’s as hideously ugly now as I did back then
@paulhunter1239 жыл бұрын
i think modern cars are way uglier
@AsherPiesman9 жыл бұрын
paul hunter I disagree, but I find modern cars are all a bit generic to a point though. Modern cars are often a bit jelly mould. Older cars aren't so and are often more interesting. But I don't take back calling the Acclaim ugly though. On the plus side though, it's not a Truimph it's a Honda with a different badge stuck on it so the worst Truimph did was put the hard top on a TR7 which was where that car went wrong.

At least Honda it's V6, that did power the all mighty NSX, doesn't break down every 50 miles. Not that sure about that 'lets melt 2 obsolete straight 4 in lines together and call it a V8' British Leyland Cars came up with. ;-) In fact, I even think Honda his Civic Type-R Engine, a small 4 cilinder, wound do a good job with the Stag. It wasn't a real big and heavy car...

Right, but the situation didn't improve much even after the turmoil ceased and Red Robbo got chucked out. BL was plagued with BAD management and BAD styling and engineering, first. It was only natural for manufacturing to follow suit and to be as BAD as it could be.
