Tally Bally Ho!
I finally get to ride the standard Thruxton 1200. Here I try to document all the differences and what I try to do, is also point out how it feels and compares and whether the Thruxton R is worth the extra £1300...
Thanks again to Herts Triumph for letting me ride another of their demo bikes! :-)
Happy watching!

Thanks for this. The standard Thruxton must be the must grossly under-publicised and under-reported motorcycle available today.

Entertaining most of all! loved the video and really informative - beats reading endless reviews. This is the thruxton I'm really considering. Like most I'd imagine, I was caught in the middle between the standard and the R. However you've convinced me the R is the No 1 for me . Genuinely I thank you.

Excellent review and a rare piece of useful comparison between the two Thrux's. I'm looking at the standard for 3 reasons:. The green looks awesome. The ohlins and gold forks imo don't suit the retro look of the bike as much imo. And there are some great deals on the standard at the moment, with half fairing thrown in. Tally ho!

All excellent reasons to go for the standard... If it is just for the green! :-) If you don't need the adjustability of the R, and like the switch gear, then what's stopping you? :-) Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! :-)

Great review. Told me everything i want to know on a proper on road review on normal roads. The comparison to the R version is clear and follow up on your own R version at the end just manages to clarify why the R is worth the extra few quid. I'm thinking about the R next year when new dealership opens in Glasgow 2017 so this VID really helps and of course really cheered me up this morning with the accent. Brilliant. Now gonna check out your R review.

The R has 120Nm and the D has 112 Nm thats a big difference, I'm about to buy an R and then i noticed they were giving a free fairing with the D which made it a very hard decision but I'm going to stick with the R purely for the power side of things, if it wasn't for that i would buy the D . as always great work Captain!!
@thematadore1
@thematadore1 5 жыл бұрын
BTW found out there is no difference in engine NM on either the R or the D, I ended up buying the D because its more customisable and the R is not. I've Ridden both and although the R has better brakes, the D has the Nissin brakes which i'm already use to so i don't notice that i have to press any harder than the R. Also , I'm going for some Black Olins for the rear and new adjustable inserts for the front, Just to be different. Thanks once again!

Just bought a 2016 Thruxton R to join my T120 in the garage. Drove it back from Fareham UK to south west Ireland taking in the Triumph factory tour at Hinckley along the way. 700 miles in total. For me a standard Thruxton would be just too similar to the T120 so it had to be the R version. Weather was bad so had to take it handy never went into sport mode but even in road mode this bike is a delight. I got that light metallic silver colour - looks lovely with the gold and all the brushed chrome and aluminium.

Yes, I've seen your video already! That's quite an amazing price for the green... You could EASILY retro fit everything from the R on to it and still be about $1000 up at the end! Still love your matt black though... Initially I thought you were selling it already!

It almost seems as though most reviewers have been wearing blinkers, as very few mention the standard Thruxton let alone go into such detail and depth about how it actually feels to ride, choosing instead to compare the R with the T120 Bonnie. This is an extremely helpful review for someone who's looking at purchasing a Thruxtie in the near future and has been oohing and ahhing between the two. Thank you once again Captain. Tally Bally Ho!

Great review Captain! Thanks a lot! Well guess what, I just finished watching your review only to realize that you did ride the exact bike I bought just today! What a coincidence!!!👍🏻😀👌🏻 You truly gave me a great and thorough review on what I shall be expecting! By the way I am also getting the retro fairing in jet black instead of white, and maybe if it doesn't suit, I might just paint the tank jet black as well! I am also placing the retro belt on the tank and maybe the knee patches or so... any advise?
@CaptainRambunctious

That all sounds absolutely fine! You are free to embellish your ride how you see fit, and yes, knee pads work well in form and function, and the retro tank belt is lovely, as I have one, but still not sure how it was last though bad weather as it it leather but will see... :-) Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment.

Great review Captain. I'm sat here having just taken a standard 1200 Thruxton out for a test ride. Here in Dubai, Triumphs can take up to six months to get so you either have to be patient or get what they have. The one I just took out is the white 1200 standard with a tank strap. I did not think i would like it since I'm not a cafe rider /sports bike rider. But I loved it. coped with the heavy traffic here and went i got onto open roads she went well enough for me. Last week by comparison I took out a BMW R nine T and loved that and the "scrambler" version ( I had them both for about two hours) but I must say I preferred the Thruxton. Had a 'shit eating grin' on y face all the time i was riding. So decision time now, since I was originally opting for a T100 but it will tae six months for one to get here and you have to pay up front.

@dave6467
@dave6467 6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Great review, thanks. I'm planning to test the std Thruxton soon, though ideally I'd like the finances to stretch to the 'R'. Ironically, though they're better, I find the USD forks on the R at odds with the overall styling theme (preferring the rubber gaiter look on the RWU std forks). But, for me, when looking at a bike which has been so carefully styled, I "don't get" the design of the front discs. Other than their size, of course, they look like something off a cheap Chinese scooter. The disc design on the R is much more authentic looking. What did you think of the design of the discs? Also do you get much weight on the wrists/arms on reasonably long journeys? Am also considering the T120 as a (more comfortable?) alternative. Thanks.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 6 жыл бұрын
I find that on longer journeys, as long as you keep above 40mph for the majority of the time, the wind braces you so that your weight is off your wrists... I'm afraid that the look of the discs hasn't really bothered me so hasn't come into my conjecture... As far as I am concerned, when it comes to brakes, as long as they work well, I'm not too fussed about how they look but there are plenty of after market discs around that you could swap for if that concerns you enough... Thanks for watching and for the comment! :-)

Thanks for the update. I was hoping to save some bills, but alas, I suspect I'll still ride somewhat aggressive if I sell my Street Triple R in order to purchase the new Thruxton. I think the "R" would fit the bill. Now if I can only find a dealer that will allow me to ride the beast!!!

I kind of liked the comfort of the suspension on the regular more, and the saddle was better to. But then there are the Bremos wich are amazing on the R model. And I suspect that it´s no issue to tune the bike a bit softer either.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 6 жыл бұрын
Not at all... The main thing for me between the two comes down to the suspension adjustability, the brakes and the chunkier switchgear on the standard model... Then there's the price difference... That's about it. Both excellent bikes. Thanks for watching and for commenting.

Hello Captain, I believe the Angel GT's (which i have on my bike) are the same profile as the Corsa's , just a different compound so they should not affect the turning (except for grip of course)
@CaptainRambunctious

Hmmm... Interesting. There really was a difference in turn in / tip... Maybe they pressures were low? A common problem on demo bikes...

I bought the green standard. Thought the suspension was way oversprung on the R. Need a suspension shop to adjust it. Ridiculous. Wife didn't like the yellow and gold. I think it looks sporty if not as retro. My brakes work great. I think you might be riding one that hasn't had the pads bedded in. The Brembos would provide a lot more heat dissipation and on a fast bike at a track, that's useful. On this bike on the street, they're more bling than function. Pirelli Angel GTs are a much better street tire than the R's Corsas. They have all the grip you're ever going to need on the street as well. Mine are worn to the edges and have always stuck like glue. They also work fine in the wet and cold. To me, the biggest advantage to the R is the suspension's adjustability. As mine has broken in, it's actually pretty good. On really tore up roads, you can tell the difference between the Standard's suspension and a really good one. Over really big bumps the absorption of the energy isn't linear and a lot more gets transmitted to the rider. On most roads it's quite adequate though. In the end, for me, it wasn't about the money, I just didn't find the R's suspension adjustability to be more appealing than the green, rubberized pegs, fatter grips, and better tires. Also wasn't crazy about the R's tank strap or blinding top yoke. Enjoy your vids. You helped get me amped up about the model to buy one. And I'm glad as I love it!
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 жыл бұрын
All excellent points and I agree with you! It's all subjective and personal after all! I wasn't aiming to diss the bike, but point out the differences. And I LOVE the Green. Having thought about it, I think that the pressures might have been low, to affect the tip in... After all, I could only say what I felt on the day in the conditions I was in... I am more than happy to chat over a coffee or bacon sandwich at a biker cafe at length! :-) Thanks for watching and do enjoy your bike, it's lovely...

Captain Rambunctious I actually think the bike takes a bit of effort to turn even with properly inflated tires. Don't know why, but it isn't a trait I dislike. It actually reminds me a lot of my old Duc STs. Took some effort to steer, but felt so planted. The Thruxy is the same, particularly if sitting on it bolt upright. I do find that if I get my body into it, the steering is much easier. That's another thing I love about the bike. It's very engaging.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 жыл бұрын
saddlebag Ah yes, that's what I liked about my old Thruxton as well, AND the speed triple, they feel more planted... The R and the street triple feel a little more skittish, which I like on the Thruxton R but I didn't on the street triple... We are all different! :-)

Captain, I agree with you, the GREEN Thruxton WAS better looking, but- My 2001 Bonneville was Green & Silver. It's said that Green bikes are BAD LUCK. I've only had a MORE SERIOUS problem with 1 bike. That was my 83 XR500r Honda. That bike gave me a Compound Fracture of my left wrist and- ...a Bruised Left Frontal lobe. I was only in a Coma for 21 days. A Full Face helmet SAVED MY LIFE. Anyway, back to the Green bike- "bad luck." I broke my leg on it TWICE. I'm Titanium in my WHOLE RIGHT LEG. I RAN OVER IT, with the Kenworth I was driving. (not on purpose) Yes, the Green 1 LOOKED BETTER. I've thought many times, about that '01 engine I GAVE AWAY. It had about 50,000 miles. I was still working- it was MAINTAINED "by the book." My local Triumph dealer, "Del Amo Cycle," in Long Beach, Ca-USA...knows I want a BLUE & WHITE T120. James Laub is my SALESMAN. James is YOUNGER than MY Son, Colin. He, not too long ago- had a Son himself. I've got just over 38,000 miles on my SILVER HD DYNA STREETBOB. It's my 1st American bike. I NEED another "Britbike."

666Tazer I SHIOULD be able to get on one in the next couple of weeks, but even if I edited quickly, I wouldn't be allowed to publish the video until the day of the launch, but I don't know when that is yet. Probably some time in November. But yes, I will definitely be reviewing it... Bigglesworth and Phil480 want to help too... :-)

I knew the suspension and brakes were different, but I thought there was different engine tuning or perhaps performance camset. $1300 for the difference is a good deal for brakes and suspensions, try adding a quality suspension to any bike and you're easily looking at $1300 easily.
@CaptainRambunctious

Absolutely.. Well in US$ it's probably more like $1600 difference, but still worth it I reckon! Thank you for watching! Honoured as ever! :-)

I think the question should be "Is it worth NOT spending the extra to have the standard bike?" Because I'd find it harder to reconcile cheaping out than I would spending the extra cash, and let's face it if you can run to north of £10k another £1300 can't be that hard to find. Just work a bit harder! Mind you if you think the Rs brakes are good you should try an s1000R (or RR), the muscles that hold your eyes in place get a workout with those!

Jool stalled on me about 4 times in 16months. On those occasions it was when I had been accelerating hard and then come to a stop and the revs just fell... probably a fuelling issue, but I certainly wouldn’t say it’s common.

Thank you! Yes, that's almost the conclusion I came to, but I still love the R for commuting too! ;-) I want to take the Thruxton on track, but if you aren't going to, then the standard is lovely, especially the green... Did I mention I liked the green one? Are you sure?! ;-) Love your video. That is one hell of a good looking bike. Love the ribbed engine embellishers, matches the cylinder head fins nicely, I went for the ones that match your throttle body covers which I also have too... Are they BC pipes? Those pillion pegs look amazing. They'd be too much with my yellow shocks but look great with the black. The paddock stand bobbins are a nice touch, as is the Triumph script on your side panels. The brown seat looks amazing with the black. I wasn't sure from just pictures, but on your bike looks perfect! Same tank strap as me.. :-) Nice union flag on the clutch side... Joke machine? The gold levers are brilliant! And WHAT A SOUND!!! I know it's indoors, but lovely... Have you thought about a decat from FreeSprits? The X pipe? I did that and it's made a difference to performance as well as sound even with my EU rated pipes which have the baffles still in... Beautiful machine. Well done! :-)

The R's colors are limited, I don't like the tacky fake tank strap and the matt silver. Triumph should allow a la carte building. Put the green on the R, ditch the strap, add a fly screen.
@CaptainRambunctious

Captain Rambunctious the tank strap is fake, and the fly screen is practical, for, you know, flies.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 жыл бұрын
okleydokley Ha ha. Never had a problem with the flies and still like the tank strap even if it is fake... It does actually hold the tank down, it just doesn't lift at the hook. but at two bolts by the seat... It still functions as an actual tank strap, but that would be splitting hairs...

u speak of authentic when your talking about the tankstrap and yet u preffer the R with the upside down fork wich is nowhere near authentic????? personally i think this version suits the style of the thruxton way better being the neo classic that it is... an usd fork on a bike like this stands out like a sore thumb i feel....but hey,they probably felt it would sell and there right.... if u fancy öhlins suspension and proper performance to match it go buy a ducati panigale or something....
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 жыл бұрын
Ha! Yes, I never said I wasn't full of contradictions! For me, the suspension works very well on the R, so why not have the best of both worlds if it is your only bike? The whole point of liking different parts is that it is subjective... Always take everything I say with a little bit of your own preference so that you can make your own mind up about the different parts... I just try to give people the differences so they can make their own minds up as to which bits they prefer and which they don't and can therefore make their own minds up about how they might customise their bikes... We all like different things and have differing opinions! Thank you for watching and for the comment.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 жыл бұрын
Further more, the real cafe racing scene in the 60s, was when people would buy a standard bike and then fit the best bits they could find at the time... In that respect, if it were today, they would get a stock Thruxton and bung the best suspension and brakes they could find now, hence Brembos and Ohlins... They may clash with the older look, but the idea is bang out of the 60s...

Captain, My '01 Bonneville was green. It was THE FIRST bike I rode on "radial" tires. My Harley has a Michlien on the front & a Metzler on the rear. I WON'T RIDE ON BIAS PLY. When I put radials on the Triumph, it was THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE I had noticed in tires since I put DUNLOP K81s on my 1975 RD350 Yamaha. I sure hope IDIOT OBAMA can contain him self. I think he sees the next few months as his LAST CHANCE. Have you been watching Israeli News Live & Rush Limbaugh "infowars.com"?(KZfaq). Please let "Red"&PhilT know that I've been unable to contact them.

Always thought never asked, so here goes. Why the Triumph heralding excuse the pun. Are you just a fan or patriotic or what? Why particularly Triumph fan wise because obviously the other manufacturers make comparable bikes and superior ones too. Other motorcycles are available but not to the Captain it seems.

Sleepingdragon 1 mostly becuSe they are my nearest dealer, secondly because they're British and thirdly because I like what they do. I'm doing a day at BMW soon, but the local Ducati, Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki dealer is a dick. Not going there again, so until I bother going to a further away Honda dealer, plan in the pipeline, its all Triumphs I'm afraid!

Captain, I agree with you, the GREEN Thruxton WAS better looking, but- My 2001 Bonneville was Green & Silver. It's said that Green bikes are BAD LUCK.
