After riding the GT Pro, now it was time to jump on the new Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer. I've added some comments on how different these two are in terms of looks, performance (watch this one), suspension and comfort among some other observations. About the lesson not being learnt - this Rally Explorer is supposed to compete with BMW R 1250 GS Adventure which has been on the market for many years. Triumph had a good example but they aren't there yet in some areas. On the other hand, Triumph has a way out of this situation that I'm presenting as a conclusion in the video.

Great honest review. I note though that there was little mention of its off-road abilities even though this is meant to be a more off-road orientated bike. The reason it is taller is because of the extra suspension travel and that's better off-road.

Fair point about off-road. Triumph almost by default displays them with street tires just like a Porsche Cayenne or a Range Rover. I'd wonder how many of these bikes are taken off-roading. I tried that with a few ADV bikes and man, what a fight that was on street tires. Even with off-road ones, I wouldn't risk it and a 800-900 category ADV bike would be my absolute max when it comes to even considering going off-road. Too heavy, powerful and expensive for that in my mind. But I get it and riding between the cars filtering is as close to testing its precision (low speed control etc.) as I can go. Cheers!

@@VToldsMotoShow True. I would never take one of these for serious off-roading. Too heavy, too powerful, and too expensive to drop lol. Handy though if you have to do some dirt roads as part of travel. I dread dirt roads on my big cruiser and avoid whenever possible.

Being in Colorado, this area is perfect for these bikes up in the mountains. I currently have an 800xcx and just purchased the 23 rally explorer. After much riding on different tires trying to find a good road and off-road , I’ve landed on the Dunlop trailmax missions. Good mix of on and off road capability. So when the time comes or maybe sooner. I’ll be swapping out the factory tires with those. But i do intend on taking the bike off-road , why else would you buy it

Hello there, As a rally pro 1200 owner i want o say that the engine shut off while clutching to downshift happened to me also twice during the brake in period of 1000k and the throtle response was also a problem, but with the last update @november everything is pefect. Also i am a 1.72 tall and after 2 months of ownership i got used to the height. It all about what you want from a bike. The rally versions are not town oriented. Thats why they make the GT versions. Also concerning the windshield problem i have done 800km on highway with no problem, but i agree that the best protection is when you have the windshield at middle position.. Nosedive when use front brake its normal for the rally version due to the 20mm extra suspension travel cause its offroad oriented. Totally agree for the blindspot radar for not be able to install it as aftermarket.. I also have the squeaking noise when turning handlebar 😄😃. Its not a bike for everyone because it has an adventurous character. You must take it to the trails to see the real capabilities.. This bike is made for taking you to the trails and long trips and make you smile! I also use it for commute with no problems at all.

Hi, thanks for the feedback and it's great to hear from you that Triumph is actively addressing some things. Even better to know that they are succeeding - great news. I'm pinning it so that others can see and know what to do about the engine shutting off. Great stuff, Steve G! Waiting for them to lubricate the hoses so that they don't squeak anymore ;) Yeah, I've proven to myself that this version really is not the go-to choice when it comes to city riding. And damn, not bad that you're handling this tall bike. Some long legs out there. Thanks for sharing all this and all the best with your Tiger out there!

I have that same bike and ride it to work in the traffic every day. I am short and had to buy the lower seat. Even with that I cannot flatfoot. Anyhow - I hear a lot of people talking about it being top heavy and not good a slow speed however I have to disagree. Maybe I have very good balance but I am able to ride it at the lowest speeds that I want to. I even took it off-road this last weekend and I was absolutely impressed at how stable it was. Just remember that just because it has a 30l tank does not mean that you have to fil it to the top every time. Just put in what you need and only fill to the top for the long road trips.

Another great video! I was considering the GT explorer version to replace my Super Tenere 1200 ES… because I’m 175cm tall and mostly use it on road (I live in Toronto Canada). Thanks to your video I might keep my Super Tenere for a few more seasons, will flash the ECU to get a better throttle response and some extra HP. Keep this great videos coming. Thanks!

With my 183 cm tall, a GT would definitely also make more sense to me than a Rally. If you like your Super Tenere 1200, maybe a KTM 1290 Super Adventure would suit you. I tried the Yamaha several years ago when it was launched and it was a decent machine and today with more powerful bikes that feel lighter, you might actually like the differences. All the best!

I got the GT Explorer to replace my 2018 S10 ES (that was flashed) and I live in Whitby. The Tiger is so much better in almost every area, I have not had the stalling issue so not sure if it is just a European thing. So comfy, great suspension and mileage was the same as my S10.

Thanks, taking it there with street tires might be wild. I feel that it’s like with a Mercedes G class or a Range Rover - manufacturers claim amazing off-road capabilities that in fact are there (drivetrain, suspension etc.) but they’re too heavy and it’s risky taking them and scratching the paint or bumping into something. So on one hand it’s possible but on the other, something like a dirt bike or even Yamaha Tenere 700 and such would make 10x more sense to be taken off-road. I personally wouldn’t dare. Tried that with a V-Strom with 100% street tires and after that lesson I am not planning it anymore. Perhaps with off-road tires it would give you some joy and satisfaction with all these dealers’ bikes come with street tires to suit the masses that test them. I hope this explains it better. All the best!

There are some valid points. As a owner of a RE myself. The stalling issues is the most "un-nice" thing i've experienced apart from the main stand being really difficult to deploy. I personally don't expect the handling to be as nimble on-road as those with 19in wheels since 21in wheels are usually more off-road oriented. Would be a fairer comparison if its being compared to ATAS, R1250GSA or KTM Super adventure instead of its own "On-Road" stablemate.

The stalling issue was fixed with software. Thus it won’t happen when using 2 finger clutch
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow Жыл бұрын
Yup, it will be compared to those soon. Yet you know, some guys like myself would come into the dealership and first explore which model would be their go-to. This isn't even the proper comparison with a full list of differences yet - this is coming soon too though. But right, within the category, other bikes with 21-inch wheels should be put right next to it for a direct comparison. One thing about AT is that it feels super nimble when it comes to turning while KTM is super stable, precise and easy to control at lower speeds. They're each other's opposites in those two areas. Tiger 1200 Rally might be in the middle between the two in each aspect. Now GSA - I remember it as a slightly heavier GS with all its strong points still in place. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!

Wow! Great (and depressing) review. Is it time to get honest with myself? I have the RE and truly hated watching the video because it confirmed everything I felt but didn't want to admit to myself. I'm 5'10" with a sturdy frame, but frankly, this bike is too tall and heavy for me, especially when operating and turning at low speeds. The front-end dive when braking is another issue. I'm that guy who walked into the showroom and was hypnotized by the matte khaki green on a white frame and all logic flew out the window. Show up anywhere on this bike, and you don't have to fish for compliments. What now? I still want to have the off-road option, I'm addicted to the acceleration of the big triple, and I seem to care too much about styling.

I had this fading in my Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Fresh softs were made, miracles on a stick, and it turned out that the clutch adjustment nut was loose, and the vibration changed the play, which caused the clutch to not fully disengage and go out when changing gear from 2 to 1, and declutching to a stop.

My 2020 900 GT Pro had a problem stalling when slowing down to a near stop. I returned it to the dealer in May of this year. The dealer claims to have updated the software. Since then, I haven't had the stalling problem. So, if a software update is the fix, why doesn't triumph issue a service bulletin or recall?

@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow Жыл бұрын
As much as I can use reason to answer, I'll say two things: 1. since you asked about myself, 9/10 times I'd go with the KTM. I'd be worried about its reliability and that my bike might be flawed - it happens with these bikes and I've seen that myself. If you get one that gets wobbly at high speeds, then long travel will not be a pleasure. Assuming that the bike would be all fine, I'm super excited about its performance, fun factor and ability to be easily controlled at low speeds. Just give it a taller windshield and a more comfortable seat. 2. If I was taller or you'd mention the GT instead of Rally, I'd also say that likely more people would be more happy with the Triumph as it's more extreme. Still super quick, very stable at any speed and nimble enough at lower speeds. Then add shaft drive to that (in the Rally as well), electrically adjustable suspension (Rally too), taller windshield by default (despite it being flawed if you've got a helmet like mine), one of the best seats in the category and you've got a more complete bike in my opinion. It still wouldn't stop me from choosing the 1290 SAR myself, but I cannot even try to convince anyone to follow that same path. I hope this helps!

I've had mine for 6 weeks now and it's great. I agree with you about the centre stand. It is the hardest bike I have ever owned to put on the centre stand. A real effort. It seems that Triumph was trying to emulate the GS' front end stability by using really tall upside down forks with lots of travel, which results in the seat height and center of gravity being so high across the range. Unfortunately, no matter how much travel there is, the front will always dive when braking. The GS' telelever is clearly superior. I wish these bikes were more accessible to riders with modest heights like the GS is. I am 187cm 95kg and can't easily flat foot my GT Pro at the lower seat height of 850mm - ridiculous TBH.

It's a good point about the Telelever suspension - it's a piece of art. About the height, keep in mind that it's also specifically about how long our legs are. @VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow Жыл бұрын
Which "complaints" don't you understand? Has anyone said that the bike is too fast or too slow or too wide or too narrow? Not sure how this would be relevant. I'm not riding 3000 miles and will never be. Extremely rarely even 300 miles on a bike as I'd choose a car instead. So the question is how many of us are. The thing about choosing a moped for the city, naked bike for a less congested city, sports bike for a race track, Gold Wing for a 3000 mile trip, KTM 450 SX for offroading and an electric bike if you're a government employee, is that it doesn't usually work too. I would risk a bet that most of us have one motorcycle and those who are interested in bikes like the Tiger 1200 often want it to be the best do-it-all motorcycle out there. That's my case as well - I'm riding in the city and outside of the city on one and the same bike. I cannot have it transform into something else the moment I enter the highway. But on a bike like this I can raise the windshield, soften the suspension and switch to a more gentle riding mode, so I guess that manufacturers are aware of who this works for so many os uf. And hey, even if I could have a different motorcycle for every occasion, it wouldn't work for me - this would be confusing. So I'm very much interested in which motorcycle ticks most of the boxes at the same time. I hope this presents the reasons for me not riding a scooter in the city but taking every bike and challenging it with that - that's where myself and so many others have to ride. Especially in Europe where traffic jams are already back to the levels of their prime time. Cheers! #hopeyourenotconfusedanymore
