This is a video of a ride on my 1975 Triumph Trident T160 through the Derbyshire Peak District on a lovely Autumnal day in October. Bike going really well with no problems other than a small weep of oil from the exhaust rocker box - oh, and a lack of Premium E5 petrol which meant that I wasn't able to fill up anywhere.

What a beautiful Bike!. It seems like the British just assumed that their style, beautiful handling, heritage and image would carry through into the '70's and beyond. The Japanese just read the Market well and really took an effort to making a Motorcycle faster, more Powerful and MORE reliable. But The Brits made Beautiful handling machines that also looked sporty and Lovely. How could one resist that?

That one you got down on the end there that 900 I rode that at 130 miles an hour on a test ride somebody wanted me to take because they had it for sale. Amazing.... You have all the same taste I want that 73 Trident and your 75 Roadster, too!

It's Ogle Design that Triumph used for the original Trident styling.

I always liked the Ogle design for the motorcycles. When I was first learning to ride I bought a book and on the back show the author with her BSA Rocket 3. At this time I had no idea what BSA was or knew that they were out of business when I was in junior high school. I thought that the BSA Rocket 3 was beautiful as originally was, they both looked beautiful after they got made to look like the regular range. Both of these bikes Road good and had good quality components in their Construction like the shocks and the tires and the brakes. Personally I prefer between leading shoe drum brake over anything with a disc brake. My Triumph trident t160 would sneak up to 90 miles an hour and because it was so smooth I didn't know it was going so fast. And it is a shame that the quadrant prototype was not followed through because that would have been a great motorcycle I would have bought one of them. My Trident was stolen and I wish we could hang motorcycle thieves the way we could hang horse thieves in the old days.

Appears you changed the steel wheel rims for alloy? Chroming the idiot lamp panel makes a nice improvement. Did you change to electronic ignition as most do? (I have a T160 converted to 840 cc.) Mine has same weep only bit worse.

Yes, well spotted. I decided to put alloy rims on the T160, together with Stainless spokes. I think they look really good and sometimes wish I'd done the same with the T150V and maybe the Commando. The T150V has an 18" rim on the rear by the way, rather than the standard 19" which gives you better tyre choice and the ability to fit wider tyres.

In 1975 NVT were hard at work designing their replacement for the T160V "Trident", the new machine had an enlarged three cylinder engine of 870cc, it was name the T180V "Thunderbird III". NVT built a prototype of the T180V but the project was cancelled when NVT got into financial difficulties. NVT offered blueprints for the T180V project to Triumph at Meriden, they put the T180V motor into an oil bearing T140V Bonneville frame, however they told NVT that they weren't interested in producing the "Thunderbird III". The T180V was styled similarly to the T160V, but the thee exhaust pipes exited via two silencers on the offhand side of the machine, that left the nearside looking pretty sparse with just the final drive chain. There was also a higher custom style grab rail fitted to the T180V which was very similar to the one that Meriden fitted to the 1982 / 1983 TSX model. Allan Jeffries Motorcycles in Shipley, West Yorkshire had stock of "Thunderbird III" side panel badges, I bought a pair and put I them on my Norman Hyde 870cc big bore T160V.

A nice bike, I had a couple of T150s back years ago. I upgraded my ignition system with of Boyer as you have. I had a problem with it, it wasn't until I sold the bike that the little electronic box had a fault. It got up to about 80 and it wouldn't go any faster. You know it would go over a 110+ Easily. I had a Lucas unit when I bought the bike but gave up the ghost that's why I got the Boyer replacement.

I just acquired a 1964 BSA 250 Starfire, with 6000 original miles, everything works all stocks, but on the monobloc carburetor that is has there is no air cleaner and the bike is completely stock it came from an estate sale, but from what I understand a lot of the old British bikes and a lot of the ones I see in the magazines don't have an air cleaner maybe just a screen and or the velocity Stacks like you have. I'm going to take the extended float Bowl off my ruined monobloc carburetor that was on my Triumph TR6 and put the extended float Bowl on the 250 when I get her on the road. When the doctors say I'm good enough for two wheels that is. I use my Ural sidecar rig everyday for transportation right now.
@frankmarkovcijr5459
@frankmarkovcijr5459 2 жыл бұрын
I am economical, so I buy the cheapest gas regular with ethanol at 87 octane. The Ural videos tell people to use premium gas if possible. Now that could be because all of the air-cooled fuel injected engine run lean and they run hot as Hades to satisfy stupid pollution controls. I run 87 regular and all of my Airhead BMW as well as the u r a l sidecar rig that is why everyday regular transportation. With no after-effects on anyting. And at only 30 miles to the gallon my sidecar rig is very thirsty, my Trident was t o o!

They have new primary replacement chain and sprockets because the original equipment ones are not available anymore. People also make belt drive primary for trident as well as for Norton Commandos primary belts smoothes the bike out quite a bit I once rode a Harley with dual belt drive primary & Final, it was a Harley Shovelhead and when I test wrote it it was smooth as silk. Without any counterbalances or rubber mounting or anyting. It's such a shame that the guy who bought that motorcycle got drunk and wrecked the bike the first week he had it. What a shame that buys got trashed it was a nice bike.

They used to Rocket 3 motor because the inclination provided the space you needed for the electric starter on the t160. The Meriden lockout prevention production of the t150 because they would make the engines and BSA would make the rest of the cycle parts and so they had to duplicate the Machinery to do all of that and because bsaa had folded as a company they still made the t160 and the b50 single but both had Triumph on the gas tank. The Norton Commando had just about as Manny mechanical difficulties as a Triumph t160. If you had either motorcycle you would have to virtually remanufactured because all of the penny-pinching that the manufacturers did that resulted in huge warranty claims that sunk them. It amazes me that manufacturers will used cheap parts that will not hold up in service as the British say they were Pennywise and pound-foolish. In the 60s you could still get good British motorcycles that were reliable. BSA would sell every motorcycle that they could produce. A bike that looks good and sounds great does not compensate for an engine that disintegrates in 10,000 MI. Edward Turner when he was in charge of Triumph he would say 20,000 miles off the line my boy. In the 1970s they simply forgot how to build a motorcycle it is a crying shame that they all died. People used to laugh at AMF Harley, but the American management at AMF Harley was smarter than the management of BSA/ Triumph as Harley survived and they didn't. When Norton was selling the first air-cooled rotary engine motorcycles Oh, I thought they were all cool bikes at but when I went to buy one they wanted me to buy $16,000 worth of stock in the company and I knew $16,000 worth of stocking Norton was worthless and I told them I just wanted to buy the motorcycle and probably a stash of repair parts while they were still in business. Poor Norton has been through financial mismanagement for the last 25 years just like the way all the new Indian companies were before Polaris for Indian and it became a great motorcycle.

My 1977 BMW r100 at 5000 RPM would be running 100 Mi an hour smooth as silk. I never could find out its top speed because I run inexpensive tires because speeding tickets are expensive and I don't speed. It was faster than the old Cessna that me and my friend Bob used to fly before he died. I did love riding my Triumph t160 until the engine disintegrated and the shop took my motorcycle and the $1,500 I paid him to rebuild the engine. I hate that SOB.

Why can't you use e10 petrol?
@Chris.rooke150
@Chris.rooke150 2 жыл бұрын
Well, I could, but the increased ethanol content isn't that good for some engine components, especially the older rubber parts (fuel lines etc) and it runs leaner which means the engine can get hotter, so I avoid it if at all possible.
